Your explanation of Bruce Lee's Straight Lead Power Punch is Excellent. Your body is into it, with no wind up, torque upon impact. Non telegraphic, extremely effective in the street or the ring!
I really love your videos. If I was in SC, I would totally attend your training. Good job. By the way, I recently got my head around the concept of hip and strike alignment. I now have a lead jab that has most of my competition in fear. However, you explain it in a far better way than I ever could. Kudos to you, Sir.
2:46 think about it right. We put the strong arm forward. (Right arm) let’s say. And then you can use it that way as a fencer would. But if they rush in. We can switch leads and hammer from the cross. Now it gets really good once you’re ambidextrous, and can begin jabbing and hooking lefty when our right hand (helping hand) is busy. 💯💥
I have noticed that when doing straight punch, wing chun or jkd, if you tense fist right before impact, then just relax the arm right after impact, the relax helps draw back your arm a bit without having to consciously “pull” your arm back so much.
wooo it really does give a "poker body" look. Very untelegraphic when your arms are positioned that way, which you can never really know what punch youll give to your opponent. Bruce Lee was a genius. A legendd :)
Fantastic j.. I’m about to drop a few lead strike videos today myself. The big spike I call it. The bolt is another name for it. It’s the bone from your elbow to pinky and the weight of the forearm beefing it up. A swing and it goes harder. A twist adds gas. A step adds gas. Do all 3 and rip a fat pothole in the bag. Chunky shots like that is what we go for here. 💯🙏💥
2019 and i hope sifu Jason your straight lead has improved :) i like how Tommy Carruthers and Octavio Quintero do their straight lead and i've adapted theirs. Still utilizing strong weapon forward (mainly to disorient, stun, and knock out) and trained the other hand to land power knock out punches equal to the strong hand.
I've been practicing JKD for a long time. Not to criticize you, I just want to help you by pointing out a big mistake you are doing. Something I noticed in your application of your straight punch that you should correct to make sure others understand not to do what you did. You may also want to consider redoing the video (again please do not take offense). Lee said you "need to be able to empty your cup" to be able to accept someone else's tea. Lee stressed to always train as realistically as possible. When using equipment, train on it as if you are in a real fight. Never telegraph your attack. Based on that teaching, you have developed a bad habit that you should really work on. It has nothing to do with your power or form. It has everything to do with your application. You telegraph your punch in your straight punch demonstration just about every time you hit the heavy bag. Watch the video. You shake your lead hand 3-4 times before hitting the bag. This is a VERY BAD habit. You need to have your hands in slight (broken rhythm) motion and the punch should appear to come from nowhere as you explode on the target. Other than that, your form looks good. Even in isolated practice (e.g. practicing just the straight punch) you should apply the technique as closely as you can to real life. never wind up like that before striking.
Jeetman63 I think his punches on the bag look a bit pushy. Another bad habit i think is the way people reset the bag with a light tap before punching again. You can't do that to your opponent so why do it to the bag? I'm a boxer and I have been watching jkd vids to see what tricks I can learn. So much dogma in the Asian martial arts - this is how you must stand, this is how you must punch etc. I thought the Bruce lee philosophy is to borrow and adapt so it works for you.
Ha. That’s certainly an interesting question and I guess I’d use a variation of the falling-step leading punch in order to get maximum momentum into it. Without having to worry about getting countered we could use the extra space to transfer more weight into the punch.
Ron Freeman my thought is that you must have hyper-extended it at some point. Take some time off (until there's no pain) and ice it to reduce the swelling. Then, when you go back to training, be extra careful with your range and relax, relax, relax. Before going full speed throw it really loose (careful to not over extend) and cultivate an easy, loose feel to it. If the punch is pushed instead of snapped, it can bother the elbow. Well, good luck!
One way to get it even harder. Falling step. Hit in the air. Push the PAK SAO hand to the outside elbow as a two handed hit. Both hands rushing forward. Use the push step from the back foot. Only about 6-8 inches. All that’s needed, since his arm is only two feet long or possibly three. ❤so I’m hop stepping once I’ve made my position too far out. I’ll hop in just a little bit more than I hopped out. ❤so it’s like we rush him with a TRIANGLE. Right up the outside or inside. 😂😂😂😂😂it works every time.
The JKD straight lead punch is one of most powerful punches indeed, but i disagree that it is THEE most powerful punch you can throw. An orthodox(stance) boxer's right hand has more power in my opinion. Boxer's also draw their power from the ground/foot when throwing a right hand which in turn generate's enormous power. A little bit more power than the JKD straight lead punch. But hey..the JKD straight lead is a great punch when properly understood and executed. And that was the genius of bruce lee to come up with that :)
Bruce Lee didn't come up with that Jack Dempsey stepping straight jolt is basically JKD straight lead, this guy in the video just sucks at it though, not doing it properly at all
It's not suppose to be. Straight lead is suppose to be the first go to punch to start a line of punches or just the first reaction punch. Bruce said in his own words in the Tao of JKD that The straight lead is not close to the most powerful, but when using the body properly it can be pretty powerful.
n. M Well...actually, Lee stated that your goal should be to finish a fight with ONE blow. ( although he also stated that sometimes a fight will go longer and in his words, " ...you must then be able to ENDURE."
Uhm no disrespect, but I'm not buying your statement that your lead hand. Basically a jab is the most powerful punch ! It appears you have a solid left jab but to say it's your most powerful punch...
Just so much wrong with everything. Your lead looks like you got a lot of tension in the arm, which is making it slow, and making it more of a push with a fist than a punch, sorry, just looks like bad punch. And no way is a straight lead more powerful than a proper hook punch. you are supposed to hook when you are too close for straight punches so saying never hook is super dumb too, and a rear hand straight is gonna be harder than a lead straight too, saying lead straight is strongest punch is just so dumb, this is a bad video and you should feel bad.
Over the years more and more 'keyboard warrriors' have appeared on youtube, no matter what is posted the experts will pull things apart..... take what you can from books and videos, if you think you can do better ..do it....you are only as good as you are
Everyone thinks Bruce Lee is so great a lot of the feats he did in fights are hear say of his close friends ect and usually only one not shitting on him he deserves respect but there are a lot of inconsistencies also if you put me in the ring with Bruce Lee did have a good chance of beating him I'm 190 for some reason I know he was under 130 I'm actually a person who would preffer to fight someone 50 pounds above me and am inclined to think a lot that size doesn't matter but at a certain point it does make a big difference
Michael Frost Dude, Lee had IMMENSE, Ph.D. level, knowledge of fighting and a jillion hours of training, and the experience of hundreds and hundreds of real streetfights and talent...physical attributes and abilities....like no one else. ( Kenpo Master Ed Parker stated that Lee was..." One in two billion." ). And Lee most of his adult life weighed 140 to 145. And you think you could beat him because you weigh more? If he could move faster than you to avoid your strikes and had the skills to stay just out of your range that you couldn't touch him but the speed to close the gap and hit YOU ( His closing speed from 6 feet out was .05 of a second. That's 1/20th of a second. )...and the awareness level to see what you were about to do before you did it....THEN WHAT? And if he could hit you 7 times to every ONE of YOUR strikes...especially that he did not fight with rules of sport and his first aim with his hands was to finger jab your eyes out... ( remember his finger strength by the way, doing one finger and thumb push ups with ONE hand for reps)......then how would your 60 pound size advantage ( which will also make your movements slower ) help you against someone like Lee...???
Jon Bateman I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I saw the video a while back and thought the same thing but thought everyone would just say I'm being a critic so I just decided to keep quiet at the time haha
Thank you for keeping the "Art" alive. The the tenacity to keep it going.

That is true using the punches as you are using the body
A pulled punch has more power than a pushed punch - Joe Lewis (who trained with Bruce Lee)
i understand completely what you are talking about the straight lead was my favourite punch .
Wow! Thanks for sharing this. Respect!
any one know how to do the straigth rear with right hand

Jeetman63, I thought I was the only one who noticed! Yeah, he shakes his lead hand before striking. Bad habit.
Jeetman63 yes agree and he isn't flowing like water u can tell there coming
@RingDingGobSmax, yes! i noticed that too. he is push punching the bag.
Jeetman63 y
random question, what punch would you use on those arcade punching machines? i.e for maximum power
Ha. That’s certainly an interesting question and I guess I’d use a variation of the falling-step leading punch in order to get maximum momentum into it. Without having to worry about getting countered we could use the extra space to transfer more weight into the punch.
Nice vid thank!
Although I agree that punch is a good weapon to have, I feel a pulled punch is more powerful than a pushed punch.
You're telegraphing the punch by shaking your hand.
I've been trying the vertical punch on the heavy bag but my elbow is always killing me after.what would I be doing wrong?

Not yet but soon !!
in JKD the power starts in the foot then the shoulder, just like in orthodox boxing. This guy obviously hasn't read Bruce Lee's fighting methods.
When I trained with Ted Wong he used always say that power comes from the ground and up and so forth.
@Mont Gee, i read that book & learned a lot from it. made my lead punch very powerful.
Your trying to punch through it should be snap like a boxer jab but with vertical fist.
Good job as alwalys, thanks for upload. More. ..
Can you redo this video so we can see your footwork. An important part to the straight lead is the rear leg and we barely see it here

delitemyheart never seen anyone with any good jkd lead punch see plenty of good boxer jabs
No way in hell will it ever have more power than a proper hook .Power ? yes. More than hook ? no way .

Yeah, but this tool said in his video it was the strongest punch lol, he is just wrong about so much, and his straight sucks too
n. M Well...actually, Lee stated that your goal should be to finish a fight with ONE blow. ( although he also stated that sometimes a fight will go longer and in his words, " ...you must then be able to ENDURE."
JKD LOUISIANA just a jab with more punch
Beefy shots Sifu J. 1:01

Andrew Boardman exactly it should be more like a boxer jab snap lead but jkd lead.
Over the years more and more 'keyboard warrriors' have appeared on youtube, no matter what is posted the experts will pull things apart..... take what you can from books and videos, if you think you can do better ..do it....you are only as good as you are

That's not JKD!
yungdar3 lets see your jkd
drewby1784 Not yet! Soon and it's Bruce Lee JKD not my mines

Your just pushing the bag there no power at all
