I mean, dont get me wrong, he was a great player, but underrated he is not. Not even close. • @james_ford86
      @james_ford86 3 роки тому +30

      @@tatertots0046 The only WRs on that list that have an argument are Rice, Owens, Fitz, and Jones. That said, Megatron was still a better WR than all of them in terms of talent and dominance. I'll tell you why, but first, let's address the receivers.
      1. Rice has gone down as the most successful WR in NFL history. This is thanks, in part, due to the fact that he played with Joe Montana and Steve Young for the majority of his career. He also had Jeff Garcia in Garcia's heyday. Rice's best seasons were with those QBs. He was never a physically dominant WR like Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson. He wasn't known for world-class size, speed, or strength. Rice got by with above-average speed, decent size, and superior route-running and savvy. This is why he was the first NFL WR to play effectively into his forties. Once his speed left him, it didn't matter as much as it would to a physically dominant WR like Moss or Johnson, because he relied on footwork and route-running to get open rather than just running by a guy.
      2. Larry Fitzgerald is basically a bigger, slower version of Jerry Rice. Both WRs were able to play a long time for similar reasons. Funnily enough, Larry's old teammate, Anquan Boldin, was able to eke out a long career in the NFL for similar reasons, though he was never as athletically gifted as Larry or Rice. Anyway, neither Rice nor Fitz were the physically dominant WRs who would run a fly route and beat routinely whoever was guarding them, even if it was a speedy CB like Darrelle Revis or Patrick Peterson. They didn't have the straight-line speed for that. They excelled in misdirection, footwork, route-running, and general football savvy, which is why both of them played longer than most NFL WRs. For that reason, these are the only two WRs on this list I would put anywhere close to Megatron's level.
      3. Julio Jones and Terrell Owens are the only physically dominant WRs on this list that actually threatens Calvin. But even Jones falls short, pun intended. Jones was a bit faster than Calvin in his prime, but he's also quite a bit shorter as well, which explains that. Jones was never so physically dominant though, that other teams would line up two CBs against him in press man at the goal-line, kinda like punt return gunners. In fact, Megatron is the only WR I've ever seen require that sort of coverage. I've never seen Jones put that kind of fear into an opposing defensive coordinator. Owens also never put that kind of fear into opposing DCs. Speaking of Owens, he was big and fast, but inconsistent through much of his career. It was mind-boggling how he'd make some circus catch and then drop an easy catch. Owens might have been physically more gifted, maybe, but he wasn't better than Megatron.
      4. Steve Smith, Antonio Brown, and Tyreek Hill are lumped together because they're the same kind of WRs, short, speedy, run by the defender types. They just don't compare to Megatron. Heck, Megatron was just as fast as some of these guys and he had a 5+ inch height advantage over them. Sure, these guys are/were great in their own way, but none of these guys ever matched the level of dominance that Calvin displayed.
      Answer me this: Out of all these guys you listed, which ones have you ever seen go up over three defenders and come down with the ball in the endzone for a TD, not once, but twice? Please provide video evidence to support your claim.

    • @tatertots0046
      @tatertots0046 3 роки тому +1

      @@james_ford86 lol you don't know football. What made JERRY Rice the GOAT is what he did with the ball in his hands he was impossible to tackle in the open field. Not any of the shit you're talking about. Jerry Rice was the master of catching the 4 yard pass breaking a tackle and getting the 1st down or touchdown. He could do that with ANY quarterback
      Calvin Johnson's problem is that he HAD to jump over 3 people because he was stiff and had trouble getting open. Steve Smith, Antonio Brown and Tyreek Hill are superior because they can get open with ease and dont have to jump over people. Steve Smith is also way more physical than Calvin Johnson

    • @james_ford86
      @james_ford86 3 роки тому +19

      @@tatertots0046 I can tell you really never watched Calvin Johnson, game after game, year after year, like I did, or you wouldn't be saying he "was stiff and had trouble getting open." Sure, the first couple seasons, he was stiff, as evidenced by him getting shut down by Darelle Revis. But, as he got older, his route-running improved immensely and he was beating the brakes off opposing DBs for years to come. 2011 marked the turning point in Megatron's career in that regard.
      Also, I never said Jerry wasn't shifty or hard to tackle. I said that he didn't have world-class size or speed, which HE DIDN'T. Jerry's route-running, footwork (which, by the way, is how players are able to be shifty), and overall savvy are what led to him having such a long and successful career. But you can't tell me that having Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jeff Garcia for the majority of his career didn't help him. You'd have to be an idiot to believe otherwise.
      One more thing: Calvin had to jump over 3 people not because he "had trouble getting open," but because opposing defensive coordinators were so worried about him that they would double and triple cover him on every play. This was thanks, in part, to the Lions having no reliable #2 or #3 WRs to make opposing defenses pay for that for the majority of Calvin's career. It wasn't until the twilight of Megatron's career in Detroit that they finally got a legit #2 WR in Golden Tate. By then, Megatron's body was so beat up from years of abuse that he couldn't take it anymore on top of the losing.
      I'm afraid it's you who really doesn't know what you're talking about.

The difference between Calvin and someone like Jerry Rice or T.O. or Randy Moss or even a Lynn Swann, is Calvin would frequently disappear in clutch moments. He'd have inexplicable drops on relatively easy passes. When the Lions needed a big play in crucial regular season and playoffs you couldn't count on him. It was frustrating as dude had all the tools and just a good guy but for whatever reason he wasn't clutch.

    He's special, fast, tough, modest and most importantly, loyal. He never switched teams ever in his career.

    we really let the Lions organisation failed what could have been the greatest running back in Barry Sanders n what could have been the greatest receiver in Megatron that do not sit right with me at all

    This Packers fan would gladly wear that 81 jersey. I watched him at Georgia Tech, and knew he was going to be special. When the Lions drafted him, I looked at my dad and said "look out". Best damn receiver I've ever seen.

    Dude was a monster, once Stafford was on the team, he just delivered bombs down field to CJ.

    One of my little brothers Eric Henderson played for Georgia Tech so, in 2004 we went a game and witnessed the greatness for ourselves. Then unfortunately in 2005 I was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and moved to Atlanta and went to about 4 or 5 Georgia Tech games and Calvin was a living attraction. With an average Quarterback he was a motion picture 📷

    I really think he could've been the GOAT if he'd gotten the chance to play for a decent franchise. Ridiculous how good he was, even while playing for the Detroit Lions.

    Would love to see a video like this for Derrick Brooks, one of the best linebackers this game has ever seen

    This is great example of how it's not just the qb and how often they can just throw it in the area and a receiver makes the catch.
    And give credit to how smart of a player he was. That always gets dismissed when people try to reduce it down with "god given talent.." or "such a natural athlete.."
