Great vid! Small suggestion, the music was pretty distracting from your discussion due to the singing. Might be helpful to have an instrumental during your content.
That blue dialed GS GMT is really a gorgeous watch. Jack Forster really sings the praises of the 9f movement. The movement can be seviced indefinitely like a mechanical one. Not all quartz movements are created equal.
I agree with you about the GS and another one I have is a quartz Aqua Terra. The last one is a great pick up and go watch, especially if you get an older one. No need to explain to people! If they don't get it then it's their problem. I love the GS movement so much I put an exhibition back on it. People are blown away from seeing it.
I bought this watch as an impulse buy in japan and do not regret it one bit. You are right in saying that It is a great grab and go piece. It's a real unique sporty yet dressy design, has great lume and is 200m water resistant. So far in 5 months its been +1 sec for me.
I like the other GS quartz but that model you have is amazing, I really like that. My main reason for getting a GS quartz is that it’s “their thing”. I wouldn’t get an automatic GS but a spring drive or quartz is something they do better than anyone else. I had a sbga085 and loved it, regret selling it but it was “too perfect” and basically made a lot of my other watches redundant! I wasn’t ready for a 1 watch collection then haha Great video anyway 👍🏼
He makes a strong argument for the quartz in this video looking at the movement compared to the ETA movements in some of my automatic Swiss watches I cant argue that it has more personality and craftsmanship put in. The spring drive is the king within the lineup of GS but the value proposition of a quartz watch like this is crazy if you ask me. I don't think you could go wrong with a quartz.
But the grand Seiko was officially established after winning multiple accuracy competition in Swiss with their automatics , not sure about the relation with modern automatics, just saying . Cheers man
rexism yeah there’s certainly nothing wrong with their automatics but lots of brands have various claims to fame and for me I’m trying to go for variety in my collection (swizzled manual wind chrono, solar g shock beater, German auto pilot etc). I loved showing people my spring drive with that second hand gliding round as it was so different to anything else and equally the quartz is like “it’s a quartz Jim but not as we know it” haha but anything by GS has a wow factor 😄👍🏼
@@akarexx0718good point, they do automatics great , they do quartz better than anybody, and they do spring drives, something no other brand does. so they do all three amazingly. Hard to pick what movement to pick up if you could only get one
Totally agree with you. I love my mechanical watches, but quartz is not the spawn of Satan. It is fantastic in it's own right, as are the other, earlier pre-quartz electronic technologies, such as the Bulova Accutron tuning fork watches and the Seiko Elnix. Too many Swiss watch companies are becoming complacent (again). Relying on the lever escapement, with no desire to try to improve upon it. That's why I have so much respect for Omega, because they adopted the Daniels Co-Axial escapement.
Thanks for the great review mate. Just received my SBGV245 after seeing your video a couple weeks ago and I'm blown away! I can't stop looking at it, the detail of the hands/indices/case is just mesmerizing
It really does look great because you don't usually see a quartz second hand that is finished as well as this Grand Seiko. The light catching it just a little differently with each tick looks amazing.
It's funny I've been into watches since 2017 and I'm just getting around to quartz. I think the longer you're into watches you learn to look at quartz as having its own unique role in your collection.
totally agree that the price to quality ratio here is unreal. I have the 60th anniversary 9F with the gold lion on back. What an awesome watch. Can’t beat the value and the quality. This is my 3rd GS and it’s perfect for a grab and go and “beater” not to mention it looks the tits and wears awesome because it’s thickness compared to the 9S and spring drive
I'm a big fan a GS watches. They make some of the most stunning watches I've seen, not to mention their amazing innovations. Just wish some of their line up was within my budget.
In the grand scheme of horology, the 9F is arguably the greatest movement ever created. When it comes to the essence of time keeping, complex mechanical minute repeaters aren't the pinnacle for example. The 9F represents what a watch movement should truly be. Built to last for generations, virtually maintenance free, extremely accurate and durable. The 9F puts even the best mechanicals to shame in all of these categories. The best, part the movement is housed in an extremely well built/finished case and dial. If you're looking for the best in no fuss time keeping, its doesnt get any better. Having owned mechanicals from most of the high end makers, no other watch has resonated more with me than a 9F powered GS! More thought and engineering has gone into the 9f than most mechanical movements even in the 30k range!!!!
agreed, love the clean look !! When a watch can keep such a clean profile but still have all the fine detailing you could ever want it is defiantly a special piece.
I have the equivalent watch in black and yellow. It's 200 meters water resistance and a screw-down crown and a unique-looking case for Grand Seiko. Plus it's a Grand Seiko. It's nice, but compared with the recent quartz movements, I think it is now overpriced. You and I both discovered the Longines VHP.
That's a really beautiful watch. I would love to have a quartz GrandSeiko GMT. I think high end quartz are a whole different animal from what most people think of a quartz watch. I have a Breitling Aerospace as a grab and go that's a great timepiece, but, Grand Seiko is probably just that much better.
I agree, alot of people hate on a quartz watch but I dont think they take the time to actually look into them. This watch for example has a beautiful hand finished movement that can rival a lot of other brands mechanical movements in the same price point and even above. The Breitling Aerospace is a great watch, I also really like quartz watches when it serves a function it makes sense for that watch. I also really like the Breitling Emergency and that watch has to be a quartz because of its crazy functionality.
Great review... I totally agree with what you said. Compared to even a $3,000 dollar watch the seiko Quartz movement is equal. Plus your total expenses after 5-20 years is probably basic nothing compared to doing a few cleanings and probably a repair of some sorts Just my thoughts
@@billybrashear1523 not entirely, if you're not planning on going swimming with it...;and let's be honest with ourselves, would you WANT to go swimming wearing this? It CAN withstand submersion but its legibility under water is so poor that it wouldn't make much sense in the 1st place; besides the bling and brag factor of wearing a luxury wristwatch on the beach/pool, I don't see why anyone would WANT to do it.
but you know if you are looking for a watch that is always on time and without a need for winding and setting every time you use it, the solar watch is what you want...I wished there was a Grand Seiko Solar with sweep dial like the spring drive. I think people would buy it.
I actually really like how clean it looks, I think one of GS's things are how great they can make a watch look while keeping it simplistic. Sometimes more writing on the dial does look good, for example Rolex likes to put a short essay on the dial but that is there thing and now their watches would look very odd without it. Guess it comes down to preference so I can respect your point of view. I think in a well flushed out collection it would good to have some more simple or refined pieces as well as a couple busier pieces.
Love the samurai case shape being amped in coolness Also any dumb idiot hating ALL quarts watches dont know when GS make a quarts its serious Besides it's a great looker and well made its GS after all I mean why NOT?
There is not a damn thing wrong with a quartz watch... it’s more accurate than any automatic watch will ever be... I don’t understand this pretentious disdain towards quartz watches... I just don’t get it... and I own automatics and quartz, from Rolex to Seiko.
I actually put a deposit down on a Quartz GS but when it arrived in store I got seduced by a blue snowflake ❄️ and bought that instead. A Quartz will be my second GS.

greg medbourn I forgot to mention savings on service as a big reason! Great call! Haha whoops.
The 9F caliber is serviceable too.. 👍
It’s hermetically sealed so the next service is at least 50 years away.

This dial in a more classic GS 9F case. would be nice. The SVGA223 is my grail, but I also prefer a watch with lume
