  • I misspoke here. I meant to say 160,000 US casualties in WWI, not 16 million.
Talking about the symbolism of the poppy flower and the meaning of Memorial day. Never forget their sacrifice, and never put down the torch which has been passed.

Very well done, Mike. A lady who worked for me was from Belgium. According to her, Flanders Field is very much still revered and held as a special and sacred place to the local population. Each Memorial Day my wife and I take a drive to the nearby Veterans' Cemetery. (It is there that I, and my wife, will eventually be laid to rest.) It's a lovely, quiet place with large trees dotting slightly rolling hills and shading a well manicured lawn. It is both humbling and appropriate to walk through and read the markers of people we never knew, but who gave of themselves for the benefit of us all. I hope everyone takes some time, this Memorial Day, to remember and appreciate those who served a greater good.

Thanks Mike, Memorial Day is without any doubt heart wrenching. My dear Dad served in Korea 1’st Marines. His sacrifices stayed with him throughout his life. We can pray this horror never happens again.
    Peace “ Crow” ☘️

How easily I tend to forget. We all seem to get so busy with our problems of today that we forget our yesterday's. After reflecting on yesterday, my problems don't seem so big. Thank you!

Bravo! Well said! My friend and I used to ride bike on Memorial Day to a town where a Marine Chaplain would read the names of the fallen from the past to current. We shall not forget those who continue to allow us to be free…❤

    Hey Mike, et al.,
Hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day! Thanks for the research and history reminder! Fortunatelyz, all members of my family in my family who served in wartime made it home safely. My maternal grandfather served in France in WWI. Yes he made it back, but, he took up the bottle and was gone 21 years later. He died on the operating table from cirrhosis of the liver. Living with my grandmother was not easy either.
That is cool about your father-in law and his award ! Hopeful that Scott continurs to do well! You are important in our lives, as well, Mike!
    Happy puffing everybody!

I had no idea, thank you. The image reminds me of the Tunguska event… utter destruction. This sentiment reminds me so much of my grandfather. I think we are more spoiled these days and I pray we don’t loose sight of the brutal reality and sacrifices given by our forbearers. Certain wisdom came from past generations that we are sorely lacking.

Here in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and all the other Commonwealth countries we wear poppies on our Remembrance day which is observed on Nov.11th. Have never seen a year where you could not buy a poppy in Canada. " In Flanders Field " is a staple in Canadian school education.

New technology and ancient tactics, spell disaster.
There used to be Vets handing out poppies at freeway exits.
I would like to suggesr a movie. It's Frankenstein 1910. It's from the Edison studios and is an interesting take. It's in the vain of Metropolis in It's old style, and the music composed for it realy adds to its feel. It's only 22 minutes on utube and i think you will like it.
