- A 2nd period goal by Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk in Game 4 of the 2008 Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Stars was waived off by NHL referee Kelly Sutherland. He claimed that Detroit Red Wings forward, Tomas Holmstrom, had his butt in the crease and interfered with Dallas goalie Marty Turco. Video provided by i0umag. You know it's a crap call when Datsyuk calls you out on it. I loved his little "Boo on you!" hand flip.
Datsyuk is such a badass. He used to be so quiet. Must have been all the time he spent centering Brett Hull's line.

to those who are asking "why call something like that?" and who are raging over the call, it happens to holmstrom all the time. take it from a detroit fan.
The ref's were obviously in Turco's corner in this series. They were definately out to get homer.
if brett hull wasnt in the crease in the stanley cup, holmstrom definitely wasnt in the crease
does anyone remember brett hulls ot game winner for dallas to win the cup.. he was actually in the crease though..
This was a bullsh*t call, there was no way Homer was in the crease.
ok for the majority of holmstrom caused no goals, its is him making contact. this is the first goal i have seen that truly should have been a goal. holmstrom was not in contact with the goaltender at any time, nor was his body in the crease

The flames were missing their top two defenceman (Regehr and {Phaneuf). Sarich played but not at 100% because he had a broken foot, Bourque was out, Langkow had 2 broken hands, Giordano was out, Primeau was out, COnroy had an upper body injury (but played) You just cant win when shit like that happens, the flames had it the worst tenfold

thats a rule that applies to holmstrom only i guess because very few goals are called back and half are his
@DeFuzin that Holmstrom was standing in the crease, therefore goaltender interference. but he was clearly not

Sometimes when you see calls like this, you can't help but think the league doesn't want certain teams to win, even though thats most likely not the case.
The stars always get good calls
Nothing illegal about this play. Homers feet were outside the crease, he was not touching Turco. That is a 100% legal screen.

when a classy guy like Datsyuk shows the ref he was wrong, the ref is wrong.
It should have been a Goalie Interference penalty, not a disallowed goal, because he purposely and successfully prevented Turco from seeing and stopping the puck when he otherwise would have.

yup, clearly out of the crease, i'd say holmstrom was a victim of his reputation on this one, & no one does screening the goalie better than he does in that league, period.

the happen over and over and over to the Wings though.... goals are hard to come by... Homer was OUT of the crease. There is NO debate to that rule. It's a goal, end of story.

So do a lot of teams. The Wings are down their #2 defenseman, along with their #1 face-off man...not to mention anther solid D-man and a 60 year old playing on D. They've got 4 guys playing right now in the playoffs that haven't combined to play more than 50 games this season....all arguably rookies (except for Meech). You started flinging the mud...I'm just deflecting it ;-)

@markuskentwood i will agree in most situations it is hard to see everything. thats why theres 2 refs and 2 linesman on the ice for nhl. now in youth and stuff with 2 its crazy hard t o see everything. But where reffing sucks in general is when the non calls right if infront of them they dont call. Where traditionally everyone hates refs

first, gary bettman hates the wings. if you watched the wings/penguins series, detroit was getting ripped off on all the calls........and also on the 2004 playoffs, if you looked on the overhead camera, the puck didnt fully cross the line
I hope they watched this replay at home later, and realized that they need to maybe learn the game better, or don't call shit you don't see.

News flash, he's not the first to do it. It's a completely legit strategy, and he does it well. Arguably, no one has every played that role in deflecting shots better than Holmstrom. There's no rule that say you can't be in front of the net in the line of sight of a goaltender... unless your Tomas Holmstrom supposedly.

Unfortunately, the new dumb rules state that a goal waved off for a player being in the crease cannot be goal judge reviewed . :( Terrible call.. and terrible rule.

This call was totally not needed. Even the announcers, which are the VS guys, don't like the call.

If one of the Stars did this, they would've said it was a goal. The refs didn't like Holmstrom. He wasn't even touching the goalie. He got screwed over. Such a lame and crappy call. The biggest load of crap ever.

Wow! I'm not a Wings fan. Actually I hate them but, I will have to say that was a goal. I mean what is this? 1997-99? Remember that bullshit rule about having the toe of your skate in the crease before the puck? The 99 Cup winning goal was won on a goal that was illegal according that rule.

This started the long tradition of refs helping the Stars any way they can against the Red Wings. Still, doesn't change the fact that Detroit's the better team.

Wings won the cup. they beat dallas. but this goal would of changed the momentum of this game and the wings would of probably swept them. terrible call by ref.
I hate that every Wings game i watch on youtube there's always some little child complaining about Crosby and the Pens. No one fucking cares about them! It's a wings clip... no a clip of Bettman rimming Crosby.

man i totally agree with ya.. fuckin scam. malkin and crosby were cryin so much that the nhl had to give them the cup. look at game 5 of the series.. 5-0 win for detroit and then some how detroit loses both game 6 and 7. ya right!!
