I hope to God this is their first time launching the boat. I've seen some painful boat ramp escapades, but this one absolutely takes the cake...by miles!
We need to have boat ramp Attendants with the power to kick out people who don’t know how to launch a boat or blocking traffic. You should also be able to pay for a “ boat launch captain “ who has a lot of experience launching different types of boats. It would help the launching traffic tremendously!
I have thought about this so many times. I could go to my local public ramps and hold up a sign saying “professional trailer backing 5$” I could make a killing.
When I first bought my boat, the best advice i got was to get some soccer cones, find an empty parking lot, and practice backing and turning- made life a lot easier...
I had to laugh every time you called that older woman in the black "young lady". I think she is the main cause of all the issues. I looked like she was trying to give bad directions.
Before they got to the ramp it was obvious that pontoon is mounted too high on that trailer. Getting it back on the trailer is going to be an even bigger problem than it was getting it off.
My thoughts exactly. That does not look like the right trailer for the pontoon boat. Vehicle needed to be to far down the ramp even to launch. I would hate to see what is involved with recovery. Wait for high tide, float over trailer, then wait for tide to go out and drive off perhaps? Just as well it was a quiet time for others.
It would be much easier to circle around, and get lined up straight with the ramp, before trying to back up. That’s how this ramp is designed. He is attempting a pro-level backing maneuver on his first day with a trailer.
You were once in that exact position Mr super trucker. Oh never mind you’re a super duper trucker, you came out the womb blindside backing, going 30 miles per hour while blindfolded
If you can not back your own boat into the water, you need not even have a boat. This is a disaster in the making. Really would like to see the rest of the story. My vote for the most painful boat launch of the year. 🤦
My brotha...... I'm a camp host at an RV park and watching some people come in, try this exact adventure is sometimes quite fun to watch... for only a few minutes until I do what happened here.... TAKE OVER! I just started this adventure of hosting and seeing just how many people are towing a travel trailer with absolutely N O KNOWLEDGE of ether backing, let alone towing or let's not forget HOW TO SET UP THEIR RIG!!!! Doing this host thing the first time and seeing the shit I do is baffling to me! I can't believe the shit, or should I say Ignorance and how many there are that haven't a damn clue about their RV! It's hilarious sometimes! Everything happening on this video is bringing my "Camp Host" PTSD out like a vengeance! I'm pretty sure those that have been RVing here also have a pontoon boat on the east coast!!!! LOL This is great!!!! But then again... I sometimes wonder how some people I meet are able to tie their shoes in the morning though too!!!
We sat in our campsite once and watched the folks in the next site back into a tree seven times before parking very badly. The whole time the wife just stood by and offered no assistance.
I *almost* felt sorry for them. But, after green shirt guy gets removed from his car, he was of less than zero help. I would say his ego was bruised, but since he had no idea how to back up, he probably hasn't much ego to begin with. Also, I wonder if there is a fuel shutoff valve somewhere between the tank and the motor? Their best bet was to leave the boat on the trailer and try to make it home.
Looks like a BMW X3, rated to tow 3500#'s. That boat is probably right at the limit. Although I'd never cut it that close, this is far from the worst towing "crime" we've seen at these Florida ramps. I presume because they have no hills to deal with there, some people would think it perfectly fine to pull a 12,000# boat with that same vehicle. "Hey!, it's got a trailer hitch. What's the problem?" 🙄🙄
I've never had to launch a boat coming in at a 90 degree angle from the ramp. That's just crazy. The boat ramps I've used and their access always gave plenty of room to align your vehicle and boat way before the ramp.
This is the most simple advice I have ever received when backing up a trailer: When you're backing up, use your sideview mirrors. If you want the trailer to "disappear" from the sideview mirror, turn the steering wheel towards that mirror.
I think for beginners, you tell them to put their hand at the bottom of the wheel and have them turn the wheel in the direction that you want the trailer to turn. The key is making small adjustments!
This is how it's done. All in all, it's a pretty smooth launch. Watched it 3 times. I've seen much worse. They probably did boat prep for 4-5 hours at home in order to be this efficient. I think even the best of us could learn how to improve from this professional demo. Bout to watch again. I'm a damn liar.
For those without the experience. While backing a trailer turn the BOTTOM of the steering wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go. Much less confusing than turning the top the opposite direction.
RE: "The pressure's now on. You better nail it. You better nail it the first try." Years ago, my older neighbors bought a swanky ~25' camper which they towed behind their Suburban. That's a whole lot of long stuff to back up. The first time they were heading home from the campgrounds, my good neighbor called me and asked me if I wanted some free beer tonight. They'd be home by 6 and could I please back up their camper onto the pad in their driveway. Two lineup shots, and one home run onto the pad, dead center. I got a lot of free beer out of that deal over the years. :)
It never crosses their minds to just ask another boater for help. I know we all feel our manhood being judged but I can respect someone honest enough to admit. "Hey there ! Would you give me a hand and guide me back? I am new at this " Most people would gladly help and you might make a new friend in the process who can teach you.
Ramp etiquette should be mandatory for people like this. I never understand why people show up and think the ramp/dock is the place to find and troubleshoot problems. Same with cleaning the boat. Make sure your boat is good to go before launching. If not, get out of the way. Sheeeeshhh
That was painful to watch. Bet they drove 20 MPH all the way to the boat dock holding up traffic as they went. If you are that insecure about backing a trailer, let someone else do it.
Also you are accepting financial responsibility for any damage that may occur or they could blame you for something pre existing, if you just half to get involved make sure trailer tongue is properly secured and safety chain is hooked up on boat and drain plug is in, because you will get blamed and probably charged
Go to an empty parking lot and practice before you make a fool of yourself at the boat ramp… no matter what, they are still going to have to pick the boat up and back on the trailer… which means they are going to have to attempt to back down the ramp. And it’s a pontoon boat on a windy day, not a good combination.
I think the ol' lady was hurting, more than helping... And that car is seriously undersized to be pulling that boat! And after all that, they end up broke down out on the water.
@duramaxadventures5832 I was responding to the 2nd part of this guy's comment. Obviously that's the least of their issues. He states "and that car is seriously undersized to be pulling that boat!" I was responding to that section of his comment. BMWs are not notorious for their towing power. And considering that car is undersized. It's transmission would not be up to the task of the weight of the boat. That's why I said rip its transmission.
People just need to practice. Nothing is stopping anyone from loading up the trailer and just taking it to an empty lot and practicing maneuvering the trailer. Hell that’s what I did. Also when I got my first bike I didn’t immediately open her up on the freaking turnpike. I went to an empty parking lot or an empty neighborhood about to be built it was just a road going around a soon to be neighborhood no houses built yet and I just did little circles just getting a feel for the clutch not even hitting the gas yet once knew the clutch I gave her alil gas and I just did laps over and over and over again doing 5-10 mph hitting the brakes getting a feel for them bumped it up 10-15mph again getting a feel for the brakes. Then I bumped it up to 20 then 30. By the time I left I knew that bike and how to handle her.
Is that a BMW 3 series SUV? That is dumb dumb dumb. Good luck keeping it out of the water. Looks like low tide too, and the BMW isn't high enough to clear the waterline.
i couldn't imagine hauling that big Pontoon with that little car down a freeway..Hopefully they live close because no way is that car graded to haul that kind of weight
I would like to nominate this for your end of year awards show as worst launch of the year.

So dangerous to have people like this on the water.
Totally agreed!! It's clear they have zero clue what's going on.....
It is just as worse having them on land.
