100%. A great example of this happened during game 5 of the Blazers series when Dame hit his legendary series winner over Paul George. Before Dame's series winner took place OKC was up 15 with just 8 minutes left to play. One of the main reasons why the Blazers were able to come all the way back fron down 15 to tie and eventually win the game was because of Westbrook's poor clock managment and decision making. During this Blazers run Westbrook had multiple bad careless turnovers, shot the ball far too early in the shot clock and committed a horrible foul under their own basket that allowed the Blazers to cut the Thunder's lead from 4 to 2 with just 1:22 remaining. In other words, Westbrook's low IQ basketball during the final 8 minutes of the game is what allowed Portland to come all the way back and knock OKC out of the playoffs with Dame's incredible shot. Literally all Westbrook had to do to win the game was not commit careless turnovers/fouls and not shoot too early in the shot clock, but of course Westbrook being Westbrook this was too much to ask from him.
Ngl, the thing that bothers me most about Russell Westbrook is his attitude on the court. The way he taunts the other team and gets mad when teams taunt him back makes the dude look really dumb.
Westbrook is a stats machine, often at the expense of his team's success, but that's old news. The Lakers and LeBron should've known better. This is Russ being Russ, why would he change now? He has a lot of good moves, the triple doubles seem too easy, but if you watch his games you see how much of a liability he can be. A bunch of turnovers, a bunch of idiotic decisions, a bunch of embarrassing moments.
@Sebastian Hackembruch Bruh out of the 10 he got about 9 were defensive rbs, half of them were non contested which he didn't need to grab but he intentionally stick around for in the expense of more efficient transition. He would also wander off his man just to get closer to the board for an easy one. The only "hard" part about stat padding is that you need to fight your instinct to play good basketball and I must say he was pretty good at it.
"Can't tell me nothin'" Problem with trying to teach someone with a full cup. He can just point to his stats to quiet criticism in his mind and that just shows how disconnected he can be.
Russ is an mvp hes the triple double king hes gonna be first ballot hall of Famer His in the top 75 all time . And tbh hes gonna be legend for what hes done with the triple double. Hes accomplished. Hes not gonna win a ring . Hes in the same tier as all the other greats that didnt win a ring
Russ' problems have been the same as they have been 4/5 years ago. Poor shooting, stat padding, such as chasing rebounds instead of covering his perimeter assignments, his out of control speed when going to the basket which leads to poor finishes at the rim, static movement when he doesn't have the ball, which means whoever had the ball is essentially playing with 3 players as he is not moving the defense with his moment.
Is Russell delusional or are NBA fans and UA-camrs delusional? In 2012, Magic noted that Westbrook "was the worst point guard, in a Championship Finals." Nothing has changed since then. Russell is the same guy with less athleticism now. We've seen him get accolades for padding his stats, but that doesn't change his poor decision making, inability to hit jump shots and inability to lead a team to victory in crunch time.
@@nvm8824 Lakers don’t play team ball. Too many guys padding their stats in losses. As far as Russell, he hasn’t changed accept for less athleticism. It’s everyone else that needs to recalibrate their expectations.
Ironically, the biggest problem with Westbrook is that he is so talented. Because of that, when his shot is falling it validates his playstyle to him and his fans. But what him and his fans don't understand is, just because the shots were falling in that game doesn't mean he's playing better. He's playing the same bad brand of basketball regardless if the shot is falling or not. It's similar to how a coach will be happy if thier offense generates good quality open shots, regardless of if the player actually makes the shot or not. Playing good and smart basketball consistently is way more important than the occasional hot game. Because of that he will never change his game and live up to his full potential as a winning basketball player.
He's actually very UNTALENTED.. 🤦🏾♂️. He just relies on his athleticism. His jumper is broken. His handles are garbage. His IQ is that of a 5 year old..

very few seasons have been perfect for russ. him and durant would’ve probably made the finals the next year if they didnt blow 3-1 and durant leave. pg played abysmally in the playoffs. he maybe his best play on the rockets in 2020 pre covid and injury fucked him. he changed the wizards culture and pulled them from 0.4% of a playoff spot to a secure 8 seed. the lakers should not have taken russ, but since kd left, hes never had a fair shot at a season
@@kylan2087 the wizards literally lost BECAUSE of westbrick 😂 go look at the games vs the 6th Beal was playing great and Westbrook was trash and absolutely horrible at defense
Russ's playing style is like play locking a star player on nba 2k, then sprinting on every possession, using the square button on every shot instead of the shot stick, and using the x button for every pass instead of the icon pass.
The craziest part is Lebron is playing some of the best regular season ball he has in so long and it’s being wasted by some of the ugliest play I ever seen. But, Lebron gotta take the heat because this is what he wanted.
I crazy thing is I see ppl actually defending Westbrooks play. Like it's ok that he's missing point blank layups and stupid turnovers cause he gets a triple double despite losing most of the time
Most people use advanced analytics poorly, but I think you use them well in this video. The problem with Westbrook is that he just doesn't understand situational basketball, he only has one gear. And he often as you pointed out makes several mental mistakes defensively in clutch situations to me. It's sad, because I see Westbrook's career ending soon. And I think it's going to be eerily similar to how Iverson's career ended. They're both all time great talents, but appeared to be unwilling to make the necessary changes to their game as they aged. The characteristics that made Russ great, his stubborness and relentless play style, I'm afraid are the same traits that will lead to his downfall.
He is also one of the most easily baited players that you'll ever see. If his man makes a great play and highlights Russ's defensive ineptitude, then you can be damn certain that Russ will come down and force some ridiculous shot as his idea of payback. This will only hurt his teams chances 100 % of the time, and yet he STILL can't figure this out. That, along with his cocky histrionics, help him to earn his mast hated player status.
@@dalestephens1588 I don't disagree with you, but that's what I was stating in my above statement. That stubborn, aggressive playing style is Russ's strength, but it's also clearly a weakness at times...I don't know if Russ knows how to find a happy medium in-between, he definitely plays at time as if he's emotionally drunk.
But there's a difference between Russ and Iverson. While they're both two of the most inefficient players ever, Iverson didn't win bc he didn't have enough star power when the league was absolutely stacked. Did Iverson ever play with such great talents as KD, Harden, PG, Melo(although he was pretty terrible so take that as you will) and LeBron? No, he never had a teamates as great as those guys.
@@gabrielnieves9974 Iverson's inefficiency is the one player I make an exception for...he played in an era where the pace was very slow, the game was more traditional, teams had more size, etc. If you look at the year AI went to the Finals, that team was extremely limited offensively, and he was constantly double and triple teamed. When you consider all those factors with his small size, it's amazing that he even shot 40% from the field, and we're not even talking about the fact he was always injured. If Iverson played in today's era with more shooting and increased space, I think his FG% definitely increases.
@@gabrielnieves9974 And you're correct, Iverson never played with a bonafide star, but he did play with all star talent. Players like Larry Hughes, Jerry Stackhouse were good...but I'll admit they were similar in position to AI. But nevertheless, this is where AI reminds a bit of Russ, he had incredible natural talent, but he was extremely difficult to pair with. And as he aged, it became more apparent, we're seeing a similar thing with Russ. And lets not forget other players like Kyle Korver, Derrick Coleman, Matt Harpring, Andre Iguodala, etc who played with AI...I loved watching AI play, but like Russ, he was very difficult to play with due to his high volume, ball dominant style.

I’ve been saying for years that Russ is the problem. This dudes will not to change his style of play to win is his downfall. Not practicing his shot is also bad. His fans are absolutely delusional.
Russ said he has become used to adapting and learns fast. Meanwhile, Lebron is playing center as a last ditch effort to make Westbrooks stagnant skill set work.
Asking Russ to stop being ball-dominate is like asking Giannis to only score 5 PPG, it’s impossible. This is who Russ is and he just doesn’t fit on the Lakers
Westbrook: *King of stat-chasing losers Melo: "Why be a king? When you can be a god." But seriously, Westbrook should've been running SG his whole career, running the wing. Can you imagine where he'd be if he had prime Rondo or CP3 next to him running point, reeling him in and controlling when Westbrook gets his touches? Probably 2 ships by now?
a position change wont make him smarter. Heck, he's playing with Lebron who has the best basketball IQ in the game today and it seems like Westbrook has become more dumb. Westbrook's problem has always been intelligence. He has god level athleticism and talent, but is probably the dumbest player to ever start in the NBA and it shows. Constant mistakes, turnovers, defensive lapses, and he still somehow thinks people are criticizing his scoring, passing and rebounding... this guy's IQ is as low as his playstyle is fast...
If Westbrook starts playing more off the ball, focuses on defense and rebounds, Lakers can bounce back big. He will have lesser turnovers and he needs to start slashing to the basket instead of hanging around the 3pt line. He is a below average shooter, but is an efficient finisher near the rim, has freakish athleticism to go to the basket even when contested.
@@smileymomod.4311 You seem to be really bad at comprehension. I said chose one, Westbrook has to play and needs to score. What "none"? What kinda answer is that? So what according to you Westbrook should just hang around the court and score no points??
What do you expect from a league that's all about self promotion and selfishness? Make defense almost impossible, change rules to promote as many points as possible and reward players that score the most points. Why bother with defense or shot selection? Harden, Curry etc regularly have below 40% FG shooting. When you turn the sport into street ball you get Westbrook type players, how is anyone surprised?
The key is, He expects himself to put up triple doubles every night, because let's be honest that's what people rave about when talking about him. So in his mind he thinks hey, if I continue to play my game, I'll get that triple double that I'm known for; but this thinking has made him complacent which is why his game hasn't gotten any better and his lack of skill & growth is showing.
As a spurs fan. I loved it when Russ had the ball late in game in those OKC playoff battles. I knew he would pull up in final seconds and miss instead of driving in for an and-one
Every coach wants their players to play hard 100% and leave it on the line, Westbrook does that for you, but the problem is he plays too hard to the point where he can't even control himself, and he has other issues as well that he'll probably will never fix..
in my opinion, that boils down to coaching...or lack there of...Russ doesn't seem like the kind of person that takes constructive criticism well and will just ignore anything that anyone has to say...and for the NBA as well as college, the bottom line is the all mighty dollar...as long as they buy his merchandise and he sells tickets, anyone that could have done anything has just turned the other way and "let Russ be Russ"...which unfortunately has been the end product of what you see now...I actually feel sorry for him...whatever his talent is, he has not shown any growth...as a basketball player or as a person.
I always found it all why Russell never put all that effort he gives into full on ball defense , he’s at times he can be a good defender but always inconsistent .
He's the perfect example of athleticism making up for other parts of the game that he is deficient in. Now that he's getting older and his athleticism is decreasing as well he needs to wake up and try to improve his game or byte the bullet and retire honorably.
Whenever I hear anyone defending any part of westbrick’s game or the way he acts off the court while dealing with criticism I just know they’re incredibly stupid
Russell's greatest attribute is his energy level. Thee end. That's how he complies all those stats. But he isn't a plus player on the court...period. he's often a net negative. Been saying it for years
Thanks for making this video. I've been having the same exact thoughts about russ and he just need for focus on his strengths and focus more on his defense. he will be better for the team.
I think his fundamentals are kinda mid...like he can get assists and be a playmaker, but he just wants to speed things up a lot of times and ends up turning the ball over most of the time. Also think that his foundation in the NBA is lacking from the start. He never had any coach that really told him to chill out on possesions and not rush and be in control AKA scott brooks isnt a good coach LMAO.
He would be good with a coach like timbs from NY. He would be able to control his game, while maximizing his skill set as well. Team ball. Defense. Timbs was good with Prime DRose. Imagine him with Westbrook. Timbs would yell at um and bench um when he make a mistake. He would humble Westbrook and bring a fire out of him that we haven't seen since his young OKC days
Westbrick does not have the Winning Mentality! it is Unacceptable and Demoralizing for a point guard to have 9 turnovers and think that is perfectly okay! Go Lakers ✌️✌️✌️
Russ is not only satisfied with being all about the stats, he has proven and said out of his own mouth, that he's uncoachable, so why would anyone expect him to get better?
People keep glorifying his horrific play by saying he is leaving it all out on the court or stats don't tell you everything, having the same mindset as Russ. Failure to acknowledge flaws and to correct them will be the demise of his career.
Russell Westbrook is the biggest liability I've ever seen on a basketball court. Why does nobody care that his triple double season had him average double digit turnovers, too??? Garbage player, don't @ me
Really at a core level it comes down to him playing with the sole focus of what he is doing. He does not play team basketball. This is most clear on the defensive end of the court where he does not fight through screens, plays out of position, and as is pointed out loses his man.(Funny thing is, he can be a great defender, In college he was PAC10 defensive player of the year). On offense, it is not merely stat hunting either. In interviews his team mates never seem to bond with him, or form the kind of cohesive unit needed for that split second advantage in the playoffs that championship teams who have been together a while have. To some extent he is a product of his era of the NBA, but sadly he exemplifies much of the negative aspects of the era while having some of the most talent of anyone in the league.
I always root for the champions to be overthrown, so imagine my frustration when Westbrook decided to give the ball away and shot like a frog for 3 crucial games straight in the 2016 WCF vs GS. It's really hard to see so talented player making bad decisions.
Russel Westbrook with Houston was the best basketball I’ve ever seen from him (minus the playoffs) and he didn’t average a triple double. Like for real he really doesn’t get it
The objective is not complex. The objective is always simple and the same: score more than the other guy. What changes are tactics and strategy. They get complex...
I have always liked Russ's game, but he did come out a few years ago and acknowledge that he did actually try to get the triple doubles. Have to give it to him though, he does it better than anyone else...Going foward though, those stats will be diminishing for him, and there have already been signs of that. I think that he is on the right team for doing it though, as much as I hate to admit it, LBJ has recently been playing at an MVP level; and that can only help Russ to achieve whatever it is that he is after. My best guess is that he wants a championship ring to hold on to.
One of the biggest what ifs in history. All that talent and he couldn't figure it out to win one. He played with KD for 8 seasons (2014-15 they were both injured) and couldn't win with him. Not even a Russ fan, but it's such a shame.
The offensively the problem is he never was the greatest shooter but in okc he’d have random games where his shot would fall at a good rate but it’s gotten worse but he’s so delusional or sum ig he just won’t stop taking jumpers.
Russ is an insane athlete, a great competitor, a freak of nature.. But he's never been a winner. And he's just not humble enough about the game. I agree with his quotes summing up his issues. As usual Russ makes it a question about pure stats, while that's not all of basketball. As said, WE don't care about his triple-doubles. We care about his decision making, his stubbornness, his mentality. He sees what's going on in the court, but he doesn't see the game. He's polarising because he puts up freakish feats and starts, but it never leads to the right outcome.
I honestly don't care about the numbers...you can tell by the eye test and the W's and L's a team is getting...and watching this former league mvp play now is just sad really
He is the hardest working player on the league, he works real hard, too hard, he wants to go so hard that he never stops to think it what he is doing is actually a good call at that moment, nah, he is the definition of balls to the walls, he will outwork everyone even if that means losing the ball because he can't go slow.
I knew Russ was going to be exactly this back in 2011 and 2012. People called me crazy and all I saw was a physically gifted numbskull on the basketball court
In conclusion, he thought people are asking him to do EVERYTHING by himself But in reality, now people are begging him to do LESS at this point, he is trying to do too much that it hurts to watch
Russ is an undersized SF, period. Take note to what GSW is doing with Payton II. He should be the pick and roll guy, set the pick and roll for lob or downhill layup (and slashing).
the most important talent a player can have is right between their ears. If they are coachable, and hungry to learn, they can become excellent. Look at how Jimmy Butler or Zach Lavine improved with every year for the first 6 years of their careers. That is why each is excellent today. Westbrook peaked years ago, and stopped improving.
Honestly. Westbrook doesn't understand the game. When he dunks he will SCREAM and egg on the other team even if the games close. Stuff like this is why he cant advance. He has no mental game management. Just 100%. That walk into the midrange was his best shot and he never takes it. I feel bad fa him'
i think russ just gotta run plays or something. every time he plays offense it feel like he just makes everything up as he plays. while that is impressive if its true i dont think its doing him any favors not being on the same page as his team. why i think that is because i remember seeing russ being away from the huddle in times where they call timeouts to draw up plays in okc. yes i know that was from like two teams ago but that was the team that developed him for most of his career so it would make sense to me where his habits stem from.
When Russ was playing the best was when the Rockets/Dantoni played a five out system. Your video might be a bit premature with Lebron playing the 5 lately.
Yeah. And Russ was then playing very smart and was not shooting jumpshots but was going to the rim and having a very decent FT%. However, that stretch was pretty short due to him leaving the Rockets. But definetly the smartest he has ever played was that 2nd part of the regular season with the Rockets at which he was playing definetly on a MVP level.
He's still chasing triple doubles. Man's got an insane first step and layup/dunk game but chooses to take jump shots, grab other people's rebounds and try to get an assist when he can just score.
He is what he is. He has great moments and he has unbelievable crazy stupid ones. That has always been the way he plays and that ain't changing anytime soon..
Dudes shooting 46% from the field averaging 9 assists and 9 boards. It’s not a Russ issue it’s a Lakers issue. If LA was 3rd in the west it’d be a different conversation
I agree with what you’re saying but sometimes you don’t tell the full sorry, for example at 6:00 you talk about how Lakers are better w/o Russ and show the +/- stat but you also gotta realize when Russ goes to the bench, LeBron comes back so that number is inaccurate, obviously the lakers are gonna be better with lebron
Westbrick hss been playing decent I’m the last 13 games 17ppg 47% FG 34% 3s 7ast 7Rebs his issue is he continues to try foul bait when he knows it’s no call he pass mid air turnovers other than that not bad

Exactly. Great basketball player, low basketball IQ
He straight up admitted a few years ago he doesn't watch tape. Absolutely pathetic.
@@David-iv6je a player with low basketball IQ is never great
Ngl, the thing that bothers me most about Russell Westbrook is his attitude on the court.

A bunch of turnovers, a bunch of idiotic decisions, a bunch of embarrassing moments.
the athletic pg doesnt last long in the nba russ is not the athletic freak he was anymore . Hes still good player but no longer a superstar
Everybody misses lay ups OR dunks from time to time. Just because it's Westbrook everybody notices.
Lebron and Russ the same person just lebron is 6’9 lol
@Sebastian Hackembruch Bruh out of the 10 he got about 9 were defensive rbs, half of them were non contested which he didn't need to grab but he intentionally stick around for in the expense of more efficient transition. He would also wander off his man just to get closer to the board for an easy one. The only "hard" part about stat padding is that you need to fight your instinct to play good basketball and I must say he was pretty good at it.
@Sebastian Hackembruch Seems like he shares that with Luka. The turnovers, D, and free throws are the biggest knocks on his game.

Russell is delusional, he refuses to acknowledge any criticism and that will be the lakers downfall.

@@paulocuento9949 not becuz of his shooting but becuz he has a brick in his head cant think

It automatically saves him the blame in his mind. His whole career he has be accused and the only thing he feels saved him is his stats.
There's tons of people who think like this.
You should want him to have good stats. Just not in the basic bitch areas conventional sports media tends to track.
Ever since I saw him I straight saw what kind of player that he was I was out, especially when he fucked OKC on that finals, but people always wanted to like him despite being a disaster on the court, I don't care about the triple doubles, they are insignificant if you don't win.

You left out the part which he said "I know I've done it before", immediately after he said those stats are not normal.

Look at my comment at the top and it describes westbrook and what lakers fans want from him
I always found it all why Russell never put all that effort he gives into full on ball defense , he’s at times he can be a good defender but always inconsistent .
That’s what I’m saying, he’s not the worst defender, if he’s on ball, he’s good. But help defense of off ball defense is a problem for him
I would suggest people watch his play in Olympic and Fiba games. He came off the bench and immediately ruined any flow.

Westbrook is probably the only player that gets a pass every single time when he consistently plays like a bone head.
Westbrook KNOWS ALL HIS PROBLEMS. He just hard headed as hell and don't wanna change.

Russell Westbrook is the biggest liability I've ever seen on a basketball court. Why does nobody care that his triple double season had him average double digit turnovers, too??? Garbage player, don't @ me
@ you
Really at a core level it comes down to him playing with the sole focus of what he is doing.

The offensively the problem is he never was the greatest shooter but in okc he’d have random games where his shot would fall at a good rate but it’s gotten worse but he’s so delusional or sum ig he just won’t stop taking jumpers.

But in reality, now people are begging him to do LESS at this point, he is trying to do too much that it hurts to watch
Idk if Russ was always like this but it kinda shows how folks really don’t watch basketball games just highlights and UA-cam sports shows
The annoying thing is that his problems are not something that can’t be fixed he just needs to slow down and think before he does something
i think russ just gotta run plays or something. every time he plays offense it feel like he just makes everything up as he plays. while that is impressive if its true i dont think its doing him any favors not being on the same page as his team. why i think that is because i remember seeing russ being away from the huddle in times where they call timeouts to draw up plays in okc. yes i know that was from like two teams ago but that was the team that developed him for most of his career so it would make sense to me where his habits stem from.
