God. When the flea 47 came out I was listening to it and thinking this is so perfect that how can anything sounds even better? Then the vintage u47 came out...and it did!

Feels like the female U47 comparison is hotter, i hear distortion at one point "I fall" in the last phrase distorts. on acoustic its pretty damn close same with drum room

Both mics sound great. The U47 sounded a bit 'rounder' or warmer, most noticeably on the vocals.

This was a really good shoot out. I know no two vintage 47’s will sound the same.. hardly, but it was still a good compare. I actually preferred the Flea on drums and guitar. Vocals were kinda even for me. The Flea has a tad more presence in the upper mids which for me was very musical. Thanks for this one!

i won't say the vintage one blew the flea out of the water, however i did prefer the neumann as it seemed to have this top end clarity/sizzle that i personally like.

Two great mics!! would be happy to own either, the U47 has more low end and low mids and I preferred its character, however Flea sounded great in its own right!

The electric guitar shootout is really hard to do this way - If you'd take the same mic on those two positions they would still sound wildly different. In such a near field every position changes the sound radically.

Omg the Flea 47 handles transients and high frequency details so well. I want one. Only 3.5 to 4K

A matter of taste, the FLEA sounds like a finished track with more body/forward mids & the Neumann sounds brighter, maybe less processed/forward sounding on the midrange of everything, except the drums. Drums sounded too close to call.

Listening on PMC speakers, the Neumann take is a bit louder. Focusing only on the vocal takes- To my ear, the microphones sound almost interchangeable with the Neumann possibly having a bit more fuller bottom. But for my money FLEA wins hands down.

Great video! What do you guys think about the video online comparing the U47 to the Rode NT1? It sounds really similar but it’s made by Rode so it’s hard to tell how legit it is...

Pretty close! They both have the late night crickets sizzle but the warm oven effect on the mids is a bit more munched and percussive on the OG.

And the U47 refuses to concede. After all this time we just can't seem to make a microphone that sounds better. I think the original for me in this one although I think this was probably the wrong singer for either microphone. The Flea sounds, well, hifi saturated. Not sure how else to put it. The original, while it wouldn't be my choice for this singer, immediately sounds effortless and just, well, right. Doesn't try to be hifi/saturated. Sounds more natural or transparent than the flea (less colour maybe is the way to put it?).

It's difficult to evaluate two great microphones through a computer speaker or any speaker besides the source monitor. But for my ear, it would have to be the Neumann U-47, hands down. It has a warmer and sweeter coloration, However, I believe you have to like the voice you're hearing before you can truly like the microphone that that particular voice is coming from. My three "desert island" microphones are, the Neumann U-47, the AKG C12, and the Neumann early U-67. For the record, I also use a Neumann KMS105 for live shows, and there is still no better handheld microphone out there. The Flea 47 has warm mid-range like the Neumann U47, but where the Neumann U47 has an upper hand is that it sounds way more open than the Flea 47. On the Flea 47 I hear a noticeable amount of compression.

For the folks who think she sounded better on the Flea, I'm curious about three things. How old are you, do you like modern commercial music, and did you listen on flat response monitors? I recognize my questions might sound condescending/insulting/sarcastic but I'm actually asking them in a literal sense.
No smile curve, no radio for you. Torch and Crooning style songs seem to lose a bit of that warm and nostalgic feeling when the upper mids are a bit more pronounced or the lower mids don't carry enough weight. I think the Flea would work great for modern application looking to capture a decent amount of what the classic U47 provides. In my opinion, listening to this (really good) singer through a decent pair of monitors (Adam A7X), and considering the style of the song, the Neumann was significantly better for this particular application.
I'm 50 and current commercial music brings me empty sadness. Like when chickens are in short supply and we're stuck with puny wings of chicks who were taken before their time, or like visiting the grave of a loved one. I'm sure some people love puny wings and graveyards, but not me. The point is we all have our bias. We are also stuck with the aging properties of our ears in terms of how we hear the frequency spectrum. If you like the tonal properties of current music then it would make sense that the Flea was more pleasing to your ears.
I know this video is 2 years old, but as someone in June 2021 researching U47 style mics for an upgrade I think it's still pretty relevant. Hence my reason for commenting. I actually do like the Flea, but at this point my preference is leaning towards Wunder. I like the Bock 507 quite a bit as well even though it does share a faint amount of brightness in the frequency response, which if I understand correctly was intentional (i.e. not trying to create an exact replica).

Neumann U47 ends the over top sheen in the female singer that the FLEA 47 did not ...... EASY WINNER U47 By the way VINTAGE KING well done for putting such an excellent U47 up for the contest, to many of these shoot outs use any U47 for the dual, this one is awesome.

i've heard it about my phone, i find the flea 47 sounds like the newer mic, because the vintage u47 sounds crispier/ slightly more distorted and very slightly more unbrilliant, because it is like for 70 years in use.

Flea sounded great and I heard more midrange on Neumann U47...

  • @RobertDiVito
    @RobertDiVito 3 роки тому +2

hmm, i thought the Flea sounded better on the vocals. There is a specific HF resonance i am hearing on the Neumann that is not present on the Flea. The other instruments are extremely close. These shootouts are not like comparing violins from Stradivari or Guarneri where the age of the wood and varnish play a part in the sound. This is different; it's just electrons passing through wire and time (aging) is not value added. If one uses quality components there is no reason a great sound cannot be achieved. It may be different, but nonetheless a different flavour of great. The value of the U47 is as much about the sound as it is about its perceived mythology. The value of the Flea47 is simply how it sounds.

The real 47 has a little thicker mid-range character with a little less clear (but somewhat smoothed out) top end. I think this may be more to due with age... Sort of like how the wood on an acoustic guitar mellows with time... so does a capsule and components as they drift. Overall the Flea sounds great... Not better or worse just different. I will say I like how the real 47 sounds like it reaches out and grabs the source and brings it closer. But that's not something you want on every track of a song... The Flea is more neutral and natural sounding (less colored).

That vintage one sounds more professional, immaculate and ready for the big game.. The vintage one is like Quincy Jones (everything that gets the privilege to be hosted by it directly sounds mature, exiting, and radio ready), the Flea one is like me ( It sounds amazing but, doesn’t have the secret sauce)...

Vintage destroys it, sorry. The only thing they're close on is the acoustic guitar. Drums are different. Not even close on the vocals. With these tests I close my eyes and stop it when I think there's a change. This was easy. On the other hand, I had my eyes closed and drank a can of paint.
