would the low oil or "Surprise" you mention be what the elevator at the Freshman/Sophomore building at my high school it was a Schindler 330A The elevators in both buildings were retrofitted cause the school did not have elevators when originally constructed so they cut into the outside wall. When the outside temperature was below freezing if you took the elevator to the top floor as it was leveling it would come down with a hard thud.
