This was my second time running the Gate River Run, and I was disappointed I was 2 minutes slower than last year even though I've been more serious in my training. The heat was horrible! They said it was the hottest start time on record for this race. Florida weather is always a surprise. Hopefully you'll be back in the future! I was hoping to be able to say hi. Incredible job pushing through it Allie!!!
No worries…I was actually one of those who collapsed on the hill. I spent the weekend in the hospital…I live here and run those roads every day in this heat (we ran right past my apartment!) and it was a rough day out there!
Oof, I'm so sorry! I had to quit... I was having some sort of crazy muscle spasms on my right side... I was a Party in the Back walker, so I walked through all that rain and StILL had to quit! I'm back for redemption in two weeks!
I train in florida and was out there racing and I gotta say that was brutal! Felt pretty shitty at around halfway and ran considerably slower than anticipated. All about effort on those kinda days, great job!
Awesome recap! I love the play by play or should I say mile by mile narrative. So many races I feel like dying when I’m racing but when it’s over I almost forget how hard I was pushing and just think I could do better. I love how you are honest about how hard it was in the moment in your analysis. Also , so impressed with your time and result. That is amazingly fast!
Sixth place on not a great day is very commendable. Just love Allie's ability to be herself - articulate, funny, conversational - in front of the camera.
Great recap. I enjoy your style. I think Normal made a great decision in having you represent them. Florida humidity is oppressive even in March. I look forward to seeing your trail races! Congrats!
Well done Allie. Loving these videos where you mix lots of stuff up. Race seemed really tough but the main thing as you say is that you stuck it out. We are all rooting for you. Onward and upward! PS you didn’t mention you were sixth out of about 6,000!
My husband and I ran too and said the same thing about the conditions, just very unlucky. It was brutal. I was just happy to finish top 10% and not go to the hospital. Been loving watching your vlogs! Looking forward to your next race. Congrats on 6th, that's a big accomplishment.
Well done, surviving is always Goal 1. Heat, humidity, and travel always makes for a tough combo. Fun to watch the whole process and now looking forward to your next training block and race.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. You are crushing it and only getting better... Someday when you retire I think you would make an amazing track coach.
Great job! Its was tough for alot of people. I had a hard time after the 5k as well. I was trying to find you before the race but couldnt find you. I did manage to see you on your cooldown which was cool. Great job! Good luck on your next adventure!
That's brilliant. Two places I've really struggled to run are at altitude.. and in Florida! Love the way they managed to include an uphill section for you all in a state known for being relatively flat. Great result.
Congrats Allie!! You should be so proud of yourself because it is NOT easy to keep grinding and fighting when you know you aren’t having your best day! Big things coming for you!
I’ve done this race 11 times now and finish in the top %10 but never have I seen so many elite runners laid out along the route. I saw one elite male out around mile 4. The Florida humidity kills the out of towners but this year it was on another level. Last year there were gusts of 50mph recorded on the bridge with 30mph sustained. You never know what you are going to get at this race.
I think you did awsome Allie the run in warm weather and humid weather like that, outstanding job. Thank you for sharing clips of the race with us . I hope you had a chance to recover have a wonderful week, I also hope you had some time to go beach in florida after the race and take sometime for your self as well.
Allie I lived in Indiana for 34 years until getting married and moving to FL. (Wife is from central FL) This summer will be 19 years of living here and I still cant stand FL about 8 months out of the year. Humidity drives me crazy and I just so look forward to the few months when it goes away for the most part. FL is an awesome place in the winter. But this year temps have been close to record breaking for Feb and so far March has been pretty hot as well which you unfortunately experienced. So yeah with Alaska as the place you grew up and now living in Seattle I'm just glad you survived the humidity during that race. Had to be really tough. Sounds like you gritted it out like a true pro and held your position well. Great job! So happy for you with the sponsorship and will keep an eye for coming races. You are a class act and funny to boot.. I hope things are going great for you, Spencer, Georgie and the whole Seattle gang. You all formed a really cool motley crew of friends.. Be safe and keep enjoying life.
Congratulations on sixth - sounded like a really tough race. I live in Scotland and complain about how warm I think it is here when we get our 1 week of summer, you have my respect for running in warm Florida!
You raced well. Yes, it is important to know the course and weather conditions, etc. It says a lot to not get passed. (I have gotta lotta stories...) {The weather has hurt me this year. We have had it 88*F at least and freezing with ice on the ground. And I did too many indoor miles... Today, it's 80*/27* and it's hot enough.}
Great or not 6th is an incredible finish, those hot and humid weathers are the worst. Seattle is cold humid and suddenly you find yourself in a jungle like heat in Jacksonville. Be proud of yourself, your place is more than honorable, i'm impressed by your performance specially considering that weather.
Loved your post race analysis and your comments of what was going on during your race. It's a big increase in racing distance for you. On the other hand, Alaska girl running in Florida, what do ya think is going to happen?? Anyway, you did well and I'm sure that you will do even better.
@@allie_ostrander yay! you’re doing awesome work on youtube, and love the consistency! you’ve changed my attitude toward recovery so thank you for being such an open advocate ❤️
Very, very good job, as you persevered and gave your best in tough running conditions. If I would have known the race was in Florida, I would have added about 90 seconds to what I thought you would run. I often fly to Boca Raton, as we have a family condo there, so coming from Las Vegas, with typically very low humidity, to Boca...even when doing 6 or 8 mile runs, it seems for me to be about 15-30 seconds more per mile because of the humidity, and often some heat. It was easier for me to run in Death Valley when the official high was 125, with three car thermometers hitting 130, then to run in Florida, when it was 93 degrees and 97% humidity. Also, flying across the country, since my trips are typically 3-4 days, I do my best runs two days after I am back home... from Florida! The body gets dehydrated with long flights, and then you have s jet lag, late hours, and the stress of travel, so when you did your 15k race, you probably started not feeling nearly as good, as if that race would have been in Seattle, and you wouldn't have had to fly across the country. Allie O....as you know ( gosh that rhymes!) sometimes a very good run doesn't involve a PR when one is feeling awesome, but running with guts and giving it all they have on that day. A motivational speaker once said "some days our best is absolutely brilliant, and other days, our best totally sucks". But I add that when we do our best, the results are something we can accept, and one should be proud of the effort and commitment that was given. Your race reminded me of running the Long Beach Marathon about 20 years ago. There were three Kenyans that had PR's between 2:08-2:10, and one had won a bronze medal in the Olympics. Even though the temp at the start was 69 degrees, it was really humid, and I knew the last 10 miles would be hot, and would hurt. The temp hit a record high of 86 degrees, and with the high humidity, I think the winning time was 2:21, and third place was 2:27. Basically for these great athletes (who probably with today's shoes could be around the 2:05-2:07 marathon range) the humidity made the course nearly 3 miles longer. I was thinking I would be around 3:40 until I did my warmup and noticed the humidity. I ran well for that day, but nowhere close to my goal, but was proud of giving 100%, which is what you did. Funny story time...again! At that marathon I told my running bud the second worst lie of my running career, for which the first one was to have that bartender in the middle of nowhere tell him the bathroom was locked, the toilet wasn't working, and there was no key! The expression on his face after running miles with extensive gastro-intestinal duress....Absolutely priceless! So that same bud was running at Long Beach with me, but he had nothing for breakfast prior to that marathon with brutal heat and humidity. I finished much before him, but after a while, I started looking in the medical tents and asking about runners that had collapsed. Then, finally, finally, finally....I see the reddest face I had ever seen in my life about 200 yards from the finish line, and my bud looked like he was going to drop, moving forward with the coordination of somebody who had drank way too much and had a neurological disorder. I ran out to him, and with just 100 yards left, I gave the biggest lie of my running career by telling my bud..."You look great!". I wanted to try to trick him so he would keep going and wouldn't literally die...well at least not until he crossed the finish line! Ms. Ostrander......you are amazingly strong, and I believe that had that race been in Seattle, maybe you would have run under 51:00. I Hope you recover well. I don't just "think", but I know you will have an absolutely great year. Well done...you are one tough, tough runner! 👏👏
Congratulations! Way to tough it out. Florida racing sucks! I’ve done Gasparilla 15K in Tampa in 2018 and the Gasparilla 8K in 2019 and both were hot! We actually had winter in NC and being thrown into 70s, humidity, and wind was not fun. It’s the week before Gate River. It’s pancake flat though on Bayshore so no bridges and hills but somehow was a headwind going out and coming back due to the shape of the bay and circular winds.
This Local Amateur ran/walked the race (and had more fun {all the puppies to pet!} in the San Marco & St. Nicholas neighborhoods, and subsequently caught the down pour right as I hit #TheGreenMonster) and YES! even the warmth/humidity was a bit surprising for me! (Welcome to Florida… never a dull moment!) Congrats on powering through this course and if you ever want another challenge, come back & you might luck out with 40° weather next time?!? (It has been known to happen?!!!)
Long ago I ran a 10k just north of downtown JAX. Afterwards, I bought gas downtown and was nearly attacked by an extremely drunk and angry homeless man. I asked the gas station clerk if he had called the cops on that guy. He said yes. I went back to my home in Tallahassee assuming the guy had been arrested and jailed. I called the cops and they said the clerk had never called. I filed a complaint with the chamber of commerce on that gas station and left it at that. A lot of people probably would have sued and won. My advice is to be careful downtown. I stopped running the Gate River 15k after that. I never went to a college bowl game there again. It’s not safe.
You felt good at mile 3 but terrible by mile 4- definitely not a fitness issue. Probably something simple like dehydration. Anyway, congrats on starting this new chapter. Can’t wait to see you back on the trails!
Disclaimer: I don't have anything productive to say. The clip where you dropped to the ground after crossing the finish line and just disappeared from the view is such a vibe lol
Cut yourself some slack Allie, you havn't been a regular on the racing scene like the other girls. You did really well and will get the benefits from this experience. Have to laugh at you going for your nap on the road after the race lol
I'm sorry that you feel that way! I wish that I could post videos without ads, but content creation and running are my full time job, so I need to be able to make money somehow. Usually the ads are skippable, so I'm sorry that they weren't for you!
You described the race as if you gave up and lost and then you said you got 6th, haha.... girl, you felt like crap because you ran well enough to get 6th
If the heat and humidity kick in, even a January day in Florida can be tough to run in. To hang on to 6th while suffering through the second half of the race with 6 racers finishing within a minute back of you is an impressive feat.
How bad is the humidity in January? I sign up for a race that in January next year but it's in Lakeland Florida. It a 100 miler so trying to figure out if I should go easy in the middle of the day and go fast early In the morning and at night .
@Dewknow it comes down to luck. You might get a perfect cool running day. Or you might get 80 degree temps with over 50% humidity. Check the weather forecasts in the days before and even the hours before the start and plan accordingly. If you're coming from a cold dry area, be prepared for any heat or humidity to affect you more than you would expect.
You did amazing! 15ks are long! I think feeling bad around 4 miles may have due been a few things: You're used to racing 5ks and shorter, so you may need to adjust your long runs to have workouts in them during a training block for something longer; this sets you up for a race that isn't over shortly after it gets really hard. And then, even though you're racing for under an hour, fueling with plenty of electrolytes in the days before, and perhaps a small carbo-load as well could help. Looking forward to your future races!
Great race Allie, I was there too and the humidity was suffocating especially after the 1st 5K. Everyone I spoke with afterwards said their times were on average 2-3 minutes slower than previous year. Banger vid! Hope to see you back next year and take the win!
So proud Allie, mentally you displayed great fortitude, hot and humid conditions, physically you finished 6th despite the green monster!! You deserve CONGRATULATIONS!! You did great!!
Allie, great race, keep in mind as I am sure you already are aware of, all the times were slower than what was expected. The heat and humidity are really tough to overcome especially when coming from the Pacific northwest, way too much of a temperature change. Also when nobody passes you in a race that is a positive thing to build on......best regards.
Welcome to Florida, where Summer can happen just about any day of the year. The news said it was one of the hottest Gate River Runs on record, maybe the hottest ever. Pretty sure there was a boatload of racers who thought they'd do better. If it's any consolation, as someone who was born and raised in West Central Florida and has lived here for all of my 70 years, I also ran 20 seconds per mile slower than expected in my 5k Saturday. 🙂 You can see in the race video as the men were coming through, there was a pack of eight girls right on your tail. Without your determination and perseverance, you may have lost all 8 of those positions. Instead you held strong. Job very well done! Just FYI, the morning low in Jax this coming Saturday is forecast to be in the upper 50's.
Congratulations! An outstanding race considering it's your first one in a while. Your mental toughness and physical training pulled you through. Keep it going!
I ran Gate River in '22. That hill at 7.75 miles fucking sucks. I had partially fallen apart in that third quarter after being on 48:55ish pace (which would have been a huge breakthrough for me) at halfway. I was ready to die on that bridge that day last year. I ran 6:xx pace up that. That was the most miserable I have ever been in my life.
@@allie_ostrander I watched that race and when you went down, I couldn't have understood that feeling more. I legit called that activity on Strava "Gate River Swim." When I ran it, 100% humidity I'm pretty sure.
Hi Allie good morning happy Tuesday morning and I hope you having amazing day today and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you
@@allie_ostrander Thanks for your reaction - it shows kindness to your viewers (which transpires in your videos) and one of the reasons why I enjoy what you do on youtube. Good luck with the next races!!
You did really well Allie all things considered- despite not feeling your best- you ground it out. Most of the other girls around you have "raced" so much more in recent times- which is a huge advantage. You've got a great platform to work off... The only way is up... and 6th out of over 6000 is pretty darn good lol ;)
Allie - You did wonderfully! Humidity and proper diet affect me a lot in my running, too. You are improving, and sixth place will someday turn into first place with time and training. Best wishes!
WOW Congrats for finishing you did awesome!! Even though it was tough mentally and physically you still gave it your all and toughed it out to the finish congrats!!! Also congrats on conquering that hill :)

It've heard that the weather varies a lot every year! I want to try it again...really feel like I need to conquer that Green Monster
Yeah, I was kind of thinking the same thing. I will tweak a few parts of my preparation next time.
She's funny. Like lol actually funny.
Disclaimer: I don't have anything productive to say. The clip where you dropped to the ground after crossing the finish line and just disappeared from the view is such a vibe lol
haha I would consider this productive!
What did you average per mile? You competed well.
It was about 5:37..was hoping for faster, but really was struggling this race.
@@allie_ostrander It's just the start of your season and it wasn't too bad.
How come the US makes Championships over this non-olympic-standard distance?
To have more high level races available I guess?
Cut yourself some slack Allie, you havn't been a regular on the racing scene like the other girls. You did really well and will get the benefits from this experience. Have to laugh at you going for your nap on the road after the race lol
The nap felt good while it lasted!
@@allie_ostrander 😂
Ice bath one day before a race?
Yes! I always did this in college, and it was so hot in Florida that I wanted to take one.
@@allie_ostrander Looks like its ok for alaskan folks, but i think its not good for performance of muscles.
A short video being interupted in the middle for 25 seconds of ads means it is not worthwhile watchimg the vid or staying subscribed
Allie, you did great! Last mile in 5:11, and 36th overall out of 11,060 finishers, male & female, including some fast men. Wow!!! 😀
Worth noting that the last mile included the downhill side of the green monster ;)
If the heat and humidity kick in, even a January day in Florida can be tough to run in. To hang on to 6th while suffering through the second half of the race with 6 racers finishing within a minute back of you is an impressive feat.
thank you!
@@tak-el-uc thanks I have done some hot races like 80+ degrees in Arizona but I have to heat train seeing that I live on Seattle.
So excited to see you racing! Sounds like a great race to build from. Looking forward to more!
omg I didn't expect to see you here, two amazing creators I love!!
So, THIS is why the algorithm gives me urban planning video recommendations under the tagline: “Allie Ostrander Subscribers Also Watch…”
@@fishflake1209 urban planning and running just go together!
Thanks! Excited to keep building!
@@CityBeautifulTime do a video about would be happy to see a collaboration from Allie and you
You did amazing!
Yeah, I will definitely make some adjustments to pre-race fueling for these longer distances!
Great race Allie, I was there too and the humidity was suffocating especially after the 1st 5K. Everyone I spoke with afterwards said their times were on average 2-3 minutes slower than previous year. Banger vid! Hope to see you back next year and take the win!
Okay, so I will just subtract 3min from my time...sounds good to me! lol
So proud Allie, mentally you displayed great fortitude, hot and humid conditions, physically you finished 6th despite the green monster!! You deserve CONGRATULATIONS!! You did great!!
Thank you! I'm proud of finishing it out even though it was tough!
YOU ARE TOUGH...beginning to think you're from another planet!!
Kudos Allie. Pain is temporary.
Yeah, I know the heat was tough. I just don't really know how big of an impact it had!
Awesome job on a challenging distance. You’re shining bright, keep it up 😊
Congrats on a solid race! It's so tough to do a hot race when you've been training in cool weather! Well done!
You can see in the race video as the men were coming through, there was a pack of eight girls right on your tail. Without your determination and perseverance, you may have lost all 8 of those positions. Instead you held strong. Job very well done!
Just FYI, the morning low in Jax this coming Saturday is forecast to be in the upper 50's.
I know! Looking back at results, I saw that I narrowly held off quite a few women! Happy with that!
Congratulations! An outstanding race considering it's your first one in a while. Your mental toughness and physical training pulled you through. Keep it going!
Gratulation 🍾🎊🎈 6. In the USA 👍
ooo im fine i just needed a little nap....OMG i was on the floor laughing....
it's just the truth!
You did great. Congratulations !! You inspire as you go thru your training and races. Thank you.
Great talent and hard work seen. Love , from Kenya
I have never related to a comment more lol
@@allie_ostrander I watched that race and when you went down, I couldn't have understood that feeling more. I legit called that activity on Strava "Gate River Swim." When I ran it, 100% humidity I'm pretty sure.
Hi Allie good morning happy Tuesday morning and I hope you having amazing day today and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you
"Puma girls" :) - Dakotah, Annie and Jessa. Well done on the run, great result. It's always tough in humidity.
Yes, I know their names, and they are all super nice! I just gave them a group name for the simplicity of the video ;)
Do i get this right?? 6th of the USA championships… sounds pretty good to me! Looking forward to you Trail vlogs…
You got it! I'm definitely not upset with my place!
@@allie_ostrander Thanks for your reaction - it shows kindness to your viewers (which transpires in your videos) and one of the reasons why I enjoy what you do on youtube. Good luck with the next races!!
Yeah it was a hot one. They said it was the hottest Gate River Run in all 46 years 😬
That hill looks crazy. Also still an insane time for us mere mortals but better luck in the next one!
the hill was crazy..
Great finish on a tough day!! 6! Life goals, be born 7 feet tall to get NBA money. Lol 0
haha I really wish I were just 2 feet taller and good at basketball
Ha!
She ran with a small elite pack of women not 6,000 people.
@@lionheart4552 I know... just a light hearted reference to the size of the main field...
Thank you! I am excited to build off of this. Not a bad start at all!
Great run Allie. 6th and under 53mins 😀. Good job!!
You did incredible Allie! 💪
I think you did one hell of a job. It’s your first race back and place 6th in a tough race. Great job and it’s gonna get better and better.
God Bless
Thank you! Only up from here!
@@allie_ostrander Your welcome. I think you will have more fun this time around.
I toughed it out, and I'm proud of that!
@@allie_ostrander yeah you did you did amazing and i'm proud of you that you finished congrats!!!
