    Boy how I miss building these wonderful models, the prices for these great models are so high that my budget can't handle it, hopefully someday I can get back into building these great/wonderful classic modles

    Boyd I am sure Carey Loftin would be very proud of you for building a replication of the Peterbilt truck that he drove in the movie Duel, when he chased Dennis Weavers Plymouth valiant.

    Nice weathering job. The engine on the real truck was a 6 cylinders Cummins. On your kit,you put a v8 series 71 Detroit. Maybe someone can ship you the scale Cummins engine to fit there.

    They filmed one part of this in an area on Sierra Highway in Santa Clarita, CA that wasn't far from me. The restaurant that the guy stops in in the beginning was still there last I checked. This road you have probably seen in quite a few movies. I used to see movie lights and trailers and stuff around there all the time

    Great build Boyd, looks authentic. Are you going to build the Dodge/Plymouth also that Dennis Weaver drove.
    There are 4 movies where the vehicle was the star that are my favorites 1 thunder road, with Robert
    Mitchem,
    2, Bullet with Steve McQueen
    3, vanishing point, with Berry Newman.
    4 Duel with Dennis Wever

    After watching the movie intro that is provided, I think you should try to fabricate the passenger side fuel tank step up, does not look that hard. The grimey finish on the cab is superb, cheers.

    Hi Boyd. I forgot to mention that when I was researching doing this build myself a while back I did find a kit that had this trailer....if my memory is correct it was nearly exact to the Duel tanker. It was a European style vintage tanker....Shell Oil I believe (white & yellow, not the red and yellow one). I will keep an eye out and if I can find it again I will let you know.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  9 років тому

      Transition Modeller That's cool and thanks! So maybe it's true that the original was a European import.
      All I know is it sure was cool looking.

  • @aloysiusbelisarius9992
    @aloysiusbelisarius9992 3 роки тому

    Very impressive work, I must say. However, before I even started watching, I already suspected that there would have to be a lot of fabrication involved, requiring use of resin moldings and other scratch-building tricks of career model-builders. After all, as the author indicated, nobody ever saw fit to make a model of the Peterbilt 281/351 narrow-nose tractors, much less the low-slung tank-trailer, which was a fairly-common thing on roads in the '50s and '60s and even used by many Army units to this day (ask me how I know that last part). I don't have the equipment or the patience to try and scratch-build parts, so to satisfy my own obsession with having the "Duel" rig in my model collection, I went with kits that were as close as possible to the actual rig(s). I opted for AMT's Autocar A64B tractor model, which aside from the badge bears a striking resemblance to the Petey 281/351 tractor (and even so, from a distance, an untrained eye won't see much difference between the Autocar badge and Peterbilt badge on the grille, though the side badges are obviously different). Even Kenworth came out with its own narrow-nose tractors many decades ago, but that's beside the point because I have only seen one model of such a Kenworth, and it was of a much-smaller scale. The A64B model was an immediate qualification in my opinion, especially since my whole life I always found Autocar trucks to be perfectly ugly, even intimidating, built more for heavy-duty function than aesthetics. Despite the surprising degree of accurate resemblance to the Peteys, I still had to do some fabrication. First, the optional overhead air conditioner that came in the kit was too modern-looking, so I had to mold an A/C unit out of modeling clay to go in the back window (although it turned out to more resemble a house-window A/C unit than a swamp-cooler); I recycled the kit's A/C unit by installing it on the roof of a Kenworth W925 model (themed to the TV show "Movin' On") I bought shortly after I got the Autocar model. Second fabrication I did was to the front bumper: The kit only had the standard Autocar wrap bumper, which is good but not quite enough without the effect of a reinforced I-beam-type overlay. For that effect, I had to make one out of the kit's leftover parts trees, with attachments placed to fit in the holes molded already into the stock bumper. That turned out excellent, especially when combined with the optional brush-deflector grille that fits in front of the radiator grill of the truck. It's been about 10 years since I did that model up; and although I'm still adding details I notice now that I didn't then (e.g., the faded-lavender paint of the front fenders), I think it turned out very good. The first layer of paint I added tended to wear off at spots where I would handle the model, as the paint reacted with my skin oils...but that actually added a fortuitous weathering effect where it was needed, so that was a stroke of luck. I have to say, if I wanted to try to produce a remake of "Duel" (a proper remake, not another of those rip-off movies that have followed since), I'd probably scrounge semi junkyards across the country to find a couple of Autocar A64B hulks to salvage and restore for use in my movie.
    The trailer was also very tricky, trying to find a model with the closest resemblance to that design being like looking for the Holy Grail. After months of searching E-Bay for anything close to that design, I settled on a generic tank-trailer from Testor's, which had a low-profile look to it and even some degree of skirting at the wheels. The overall orientation of the trailer is noticeably different, but I was able to make it work with the Autocar tractor. It does have a pretty low profile to it, and the skirting the kit offered adds some degree of resemblance. I do, however, consider it an ongoing project, so in the future I may consider fabricating more skirting around the wheels to give it more resemblance.

  • @captainmorgan1107
    @captainmorgan1107 6 років тому

    Excellent work, your weathering techniques are awesome! I'm not criticizing your work, but if you are wanting to make it exactly like the movie truck, you should remove the inter-axle driveshaft and the rearmost driven axle on the tandem and add a non-driven tag axle instead. The original truck was a 281(single drive) not a 351(dual drive). Other than that and the 5 hole wheels, it is the best Duel truck replica I've seen.

    • @TrekWorks
      @TrekWorks  6 років тому

      Thanks, that's some great info about the truck that I'll try and remember. There were not a lot of those specifics available about it in my internet research when I built it. Mostly facts about the 3 movie trucks used for the original film and for the reshoot they did for the longer theater release version a year later. I actually heard from the guy who owns the only surviving truck which was pretty cool.

      Transition Modeller That would be neat but like the trailer for this truck I have not found a 4 door Valiant kit that was made. I did find where one guy had taken an old duster kit and made it into the 4 door Valient and he had it looking exact with the right grill and tail lights and all. Pretty sweet.

      It's craft acrylic paint from Folk Art. I think it was antique gold to which I added a a little basic black to darken it a bit. I find that most metallic model car paints have flake that is too big for the scale which is why I don't use them.
