What about Ida Tarbell who virtually single handedly caused the breakup of the monopolistic Standard Oil, Upton Sinclair whose knowledge of the meat industry and the outrageous activities they were about in producing canned meat products which led to his novel "The Jungle" which reveal how they were endangering the health of American consumers led to the formation of the FDA, Edward R. Murrow and Murrey Marder who exposed the excesses of Senator Joe McCarthy, or David Halberstam and Seymour Hersh who revealed the lying that went on in Vietnam. Hersh was the first one to report the My Lai Massacre. All these reporters were the authors of consequential stories that fundamentally altered the way we do business in the United States. Any capable investigative reporter would have done the same thing as Woodward and Bernstein and the story virtually fell into their lap because they were the reporters on duty at the Washington Post that morning when the Watergate Burglars were being arraigned by the DC court.
Obviously Ben Bradlee determined these two young men were enthusiastic for the story and so assigned them to it. And both being ambitious and skillful journalists doggedly stayed at it. I would expect nothing less from well trained reporters. And of course most of us saw the movie "All the President's Men" the dramatically telling of it that Robert Redford was the driving force behind it and who played Woodward in it alongside another great American actor Dustin Hoffman. That movie forever fixed in our minds what a great investigative reporting can do. It inspired many to want to emulate them and for awhile much of the American press seemed intent to reveal any negative story about individuals as another Watergate type scandal, almost to the point that the word "Gate" was affixed to any story that shown anyone in a negative light, and often as not the scandal was simply nothing of any real consequence other than a way to ruin some people's lives and careers.
It turned then into "Gotcha Journalism" and most times patently unfair. And now we've come full circle where every story that is critical of the right wing is based on the liberal media out to get right wingers. For sometime now the networks treat the right wing with kid gloves because much of their advertisers are part of the right wing Republican donor class, so you never get any reporting that shows American corporations in a negative light and the networks want to make money out of their news divisions which in the old days when Cronkite and Rather and many others were at CBS, Huntley-Brinkley and Chancellor were at NBC, Howard K. Smith at ABC. They didn't expect to make money off their news divisions then because the reporting of news and the facts around them were in the public's interest and a sacrifice the networks made because accurate news was necessary to keep a democratic republic a viable possibility.
But some time in the late eighties or early nineties when they did away with the "Fairness Doctrine" and the accompanying rise of the cable industry and Hate Talk Radio you saw the networks transfer management of their news divisions to their Entertainment divisions which saw them become in many cases especially in their spin off cable divisions nothing but forums for editorializing and opinion and with the advent of Fox News in the US specifically right wing outrageousness. Conservative Australian PM Kevin Rudd has stated without equivocation that Rupert Murdoch is a cancer on democracy. Why we allow this foreigner who virtually destroyed democracy in the UK and his native Australia to come to the US and have his citizenship fast tracked by Ronald Reagan.
He's had to much power in determining the policies of our government far to long, he's owned a political party and made them virtually subservient to his agenda which is mostly about the accumulation of wealth for himself and those like him. And the fact he's been able to do this is beyond me. Woodward has done some great things in his career, but now I think his ambition is mostly interested in self promotion and making lots of money. He well knew Trump was lying about what he knew and understood about the Corona Virus and didn't have the common decency to reveal it and simply because I think to prevent it from trumping the release of his book which was bound to make him a fortune in sales and that was grotesquely selfish on his part and should outrage the American people. He could have saved many lives and chose not to.

One of Bob Woodwards key-Element for interviewing people is that he shows empathy for them and makes them feel comfortable.
Of course People are openning when they are at their home, because they have nothing to fear.
And also Bob is the guy who has this cool Charisma, if he would not be a reporter I am pretty sure he would be a damn good detective or psychotherapist.

I would love some reporting on how other nations, ie. Spain, France, feel about what Trump knew about the virus. One might conclude that "playing it down" devastated them as well, in lives lost and economic destruction. Am I the only one wondering about this?
Ive read MANY MANY comments from ppl in other countries. Most recently from Canada, close to home. A mom from Canada & her friend used to pretty close & their daughters played together at the park. Her (former) friend is such a huge fan of Trump that she cannot tolerate anyone who doesn't think he's the bees knees. I had just been thinking of how I would never let this fool destroy my relationships, so I just about cried when I read her comment and realized that Trumpism is destroying relationships even in other countries. My thoughts almost immediately went to biblical scripture, as usual. The bible says that satan & his demons seek to divide, deceive & destroy and that in the end times there will be deceptions that we couldn't have even imagined but that seem SO VERY TRUE that even many Christians will fall prey to them. The bible has never steered me wrong.
Bernstein is one of the few journalists who speaks plainly and without euphemisms about the monster who rules America.
If you haven't seen the movie go and watch it. The nuts and bolts of the story is FABULOUS.
Anyone that doesn't know who Woodward and Bernstein are. Check out the movie "All The Presidents Men". It will be entertaining at least, and also a history lesson on watergate and how the truth became known. Can't go wrong with actors like Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. Two great actors of the time....

Im canadian, I know he played dirty, but I really do think he thought he was protectting country, he used his power , combined with his paranoia. He wasa smart man, especially with foreign policy, I think he was well liked by most foreign leaders. I cried for him when he made resignation speech, and especially at his wifes funrea, he was tearful and griefstricken, so touching, .We often saw him as an emotional robot, but he wasnt, he really was a shy man except with people he was close to. He had very good wisdom, especially years later, his motto: "never give up in times of crisis", I especially liked the thumbs up sign right before he died. Nixon would have been disgusted at current president, I cant understand why replubican party. DOESNT STAND UP TO TRUMP LIKE THEY DID NIXON.

Woodward is wrong about who made the quote about how "The only way for three people can keep a secret is for two of them to be dead." He attributed the quote to some unnamed Russian novelist when in fact it was perhaps the greatest American novelist in history Mark Twain who said it. It is an affront to that great man's memory that Woodward would suggest anyone other than he made such a cogent observation about the nature of conspiracies and human nature, that it is almost impossible for massive conspiracies to exist and not at some time to be revealed because human beings have a penchant for sharing information that others might not know. It is the inherent arrogance of humans to share something they know that others might not know. Take for instance when someone notable dies and the person discovering it sees others they are certain aren't aware of what they have just discovered. Well their human nature demands they share it as if somehow the sharing of it esteems them in the eyes of the person they are revealing it to.
Finally after having smart Presidents (Bush, the dumb one the only exception) to vote for some people have Trump, their intellectual equal to vote for so exposing him wont make a difference; his base are going to vote for him anyway no matter what is written or said.

From a practical standpoint impeaching Trump is unlikely to result in him being convicted removed from office, because the (Republican-majority) Senate would be the judge/jury in those proceedings. The whole thing could back-fire on the Democrats in terms of how the voting base reacts to it.
And then, even if you suppose Trump would be impeached and removed from office, how do you extend that to Pence? If Mueller's investigation didn't indicate any wrong-doing on his part, then there's no basis for impeaching him, and he could pardon Trump. So in very real terms once you're president, criminal activity has very little power over you.
That said, personally I think if there is a real case against Trump, he should be impeached, because crime should have consequences (to the extent possible - as previously noted pardon power is kind of OP). If there really is a case against him it's right that it should be heard, even if the best we can hope for is a senate full of Republican partisan hacks rushing to downplay or dismiss the charges.

My sense is that many Americans no longer receive their information from print, not from newspapers or Bob Woodwards books, if I may coin a phrase "print is falling on blind eyes." We need podcasts, videos, Instagram, UA-cam, Tic-Toc (yes, Tic-Tok) video presentations of Bob Woodward's books. We need the "FEAR Show" and the "RAGE Show" where the books are ready in accessible chunks for the "too busy" or "too shallow" to absorb. Trump will win where rational discourse has been erased! I read as much as I can those books that I think are worth reading about various political players. Bob Woodward's books are always worth reading, because he maintains the journalistic standards set with Carl on All the President's Men and The Final Days (the latter being essential for anyone who needs the pay-off).
Even glancing contact with the current president is enough for any rational person to have a solid grasp of the man's idiocy, greed, weak character, dishonesty and incompetence. He said something stupid yesterday, again today, and it's not unreasonable to think that he'll say and do stupid things tomorrow.
On that basis, it would have been fair to assume that there's nothing Woodward's book could tell you that you don't already broadly know. But Fear made me realize how fucking terrible Dumb Nixon is _even when_ he has smarter, more sober, cautionary people trying to explain things to him in crayon.
John Dean served as White House counsel to Nixon from 1970 to 73, he was a key figure in the Watergate saga-participating in, and then helping to expose, the most iconic political scandal in modern U.S. history at the time. Today Dean believes Trump could be one of the most corrupt presidents ever-and get away with it.
“The American presidency has never been at the whims of an authoritarian personality like Donald Trump,” Dean stated. “He is going to test our democracy as it has never been tested."
Dean stated that he is not only convinced that Trump will be worse than Nixon in virtually every way-he thinks he’ll probably get away with it.
“I used to have one-on-one conversations with Nixon, where I’d see him checking his more authoritarian tendencies,” Dean recalled. “He’d say, ‘This is something I can’t say out loud...’ or, ‘That is something the president can’t do.’” To Dean, these moments suggested a functioning sense of shame in Nixon, something he was forced to wrestle with in his quest for power. Trump, by contrast, appears to Dean unmolested by any such struggle." Dean went even further in his assessment, stating: “I don’t think Richard Nixon even comes close to the level of corruption we already know about Trump.”
And a big difference between what happened then and now is that, in Watergate, you didn't have literally dozens of lawmakers from the President's party (then, as is the case now, the GOP) that were involved in the same mess that Nixon was involved with. There's a reason I consider this mess to be Watergate, Abscam (a forgotten political scandal around the time of the 1980 election in which a dozen or more Democratic lawmakers were tried and convicted), and Iran-Contra rolled into one and then pumped with steroids in the same manner that you would fuel your gas tank.
This scandal that is being investigated by Bob Mueller and other parts of the DOJ is so massive in scope that, not only do you have the President involved, but you also have members of his family, virtually his entire cabinet, his campaign team, and as of now, 43 GOP lawmakers, a number that includes the late John McCain ($200K from Vekselberg and Blavatnik) and five GOP governors (Abbott-TX, Bryant-MS, Kasich-OH, Scott-FL, and Walker-WI), all tied by various reporting to Russia and/or what Mueller and other parts of the DOJ are investigating. And there could be 20-30 more GOP lawmakers more who could find themselves tied to this mess (9 other GOP senators took from two entities heavily tied to Cambridge Analytica) or facing a mass obstruction probe down the line.
Dean must have been asleep when Holder was running guns, or when Obama was dropping 26,000 bombs in one year, or when Clinton was helping bomb Libya back into slavery. The argument is STUPID that Dean makes. Trump, for all the complaints of his authoritarianism has WAITED ON THE COURTS when things didn't go his way. Obama got a pass from the press so everyone can miss me with this nonsense. IRS targeted conservative groups and we don't hear a peep about that.
And when the history is written on Trump will you still be complaining about Obama and the Clintons?

Interesting to see this two years after the original airing. These guys are sharp, legendary... but in all of the justified Trump analysis, where is the acknowledgment that without the 40+% of the people to sponge it up, he wouldn't be anywhere?

In general, maybe:
The war on truth and facts is waged by people/politicians/whoever to overcome the general notions established throughout the 20th century of a liberal, free and democratic order. In democracy if the facts and solutions are clear to most people, factions that want the opposite, need to subvert those facts and truths to have a possibility to gain power and influence.
The US economy where rich people and businesses can buy viewpoints politicians promote and which politicians might be elected prevents a facts-based discussion in which way problems can be tackled. IN the past ideology was enough to prevent people from seeing the solution. Now lies are needed. Social media is great tool for that, because it requires a bubble which is separate to the reality.
Brexit might be an also a good example, where facts were wiped away with the accusation of scare mongering, and people were persuaded to vote to leave by lies that were impossible to hold up to.
Same maybe for Trump, where white people from the lower income class vote against their own interests for a privileged New Yorker businessman, who gets them by appealing to their fears of globalisation and migration. But he is not a champion of the poor but rather of the rich and the wall street.
In Europe in general you see neoliberals aligning with right wing agenda to tell people that the reason why their income is stagnant are foreigners. Actually, it was the inability of politicians to make sure that all people profit from GDP growth, especially since 2008 when rich people got increasingly richer and low incomes are stagnant or even decline compared to inflation.
Franz - you are quite correct re Brexit. It will be a disaster for the U.K. I am truly scared about the future. People believed the lies. They believed the fear mongering. Trump’s whole attitude is one of stirring up fear. Don’t fall for it.
Why can't you guys get together and form your own country where you can have taxes as high as you like, go to work to support the other half who doesn't work, let anyone in who wants to come, and have free health care, free college, free everything? It would be worth it, wouldn't it?

Actually, I think that they both did answer her last question. They did so by qouting those who have worked closely with this president and have concluded that he is unfit for the job. The strength of their answer is in the authorities mentioned, and their number.
