another very very helpfull video.. I was about to cut them out of slabs when I saw this... saved me loads of time and I've got my 54 buttons for my oil barrel kiln ready... thanx!
great video simon. when i made mine i just rolled a 1 1/4" coil and cut it with a thin wire placed them between two pieces of drywall ,used a pin tool to make the holes. when dry they went into the finish firing.. damed phones john
Simon, I used you oil drum vid to make my own Raku kiln, thanks! Used a 55 gal and cut 1/3 down. It was used for Soy oil, didn't have to clean it. First firing pots very pretty! Used sawdust. Venturi burner easy to find, hose & fittings hard. Blue Star Gas had parts & assembled them for me. Bought tank there. Hole in side was 4 in, had to enlarge lid hole from 4 in to 5 in.
"pays your moneys and takes your choice" Sounds like abit of Jeremy is coming out in your speach HaHa! Love it! How are those lovely brothers of yours, Simon? hugs to them both! From the crazy Redhead who's brother looks similar to John, HaHa. That is before he shaved all his hair and beard off , on New Years Eve! If they are going to call, least they could is be the right # or pay you for answering it HaHa. Buttons are what most of my books say! I like my old gutted electric kilns best!
Another thought - why are the ceramic buttons needed? Why can't you tie the wire through the fiber blanket without them? I've never made a raku kiln nor have seen one so I really don't know
Hi Simon. I'm planning on repurposing an old dog crate (2'x2'x3') to use as a kiln for a project with my students. I've gotten some 2" fiber blanket to use. I'll be firing about 60 pieces approx. 6"x4" and need to get them done within a five hour time period. Any idea if I'm underestimating space/time? Also, how much propane would you expect I might use? Cheers, Mark
The title being misleading is probably the reason for people giving this otherwise good video a thumbs down. The kiln gets a brief mention in the final minute.
I shudder every time you adjust your camera with wet clay all over your hands!! I can picture your camera with clay smudges all over it. Apparently it doesn't do any harm as you keep filming for us, which we appreciate. Nice kiln ideas, I must try that this coming summer.

That was funny with the telephone. I hate it when that happens. Good info on the raku kiln.

Nice idea, Simon. Adorama is one of the best internet suppliers of photo equipment.
grate series idea simon !
Have you been to Bailey's up in Kingston? That shouldn't be too far from you I don't think. I'd love to roam around that place if I were closer!
I think the fiber is very fluffy. I think if you just use the wire, it might tear through.

thanks Simon. Another delightful clip...
Is it Kanthal Wire? Thank you for letting us in on your adventures.

Western Canada, Vancouver Island would be best! Of course wherever Spharaoh is also. Canadian tour!

Wouldn't it be easier to just roll a log and slice it?
Yeah, tough luck with that tripod. Say, how many clicks would you need to afford yourself a nicer one? Maybe the youtube community can hook you up
