    Not sure if it’s been covered but, advice on oily roots and dry ends would be amazing. Tried so many things to correct it and no results.

      Mel mil Mel mil I have the same thing! And what works for me is a shampoo that is thinner constituency and not so thick. Matrix has a good shampoo that is a red and black bottle called repair shampoo. Shampoo 3x and rinse with warm water. Then I use a hair mask, any one will work, then rinse that out and then use a conditioner that’s meant for dry hair and only use it on the ends. Make sure your hair is damp and squeeze out any extra water, then put it on and leave for anout 5 minutes and then rinse with COLD COLD water!!!

      Stop using shampoo. It dries out the hair and makes the roots greasy.

    The main reason why I'm picky with salons is because I had an experience before where almost everyone (the staff) aggressively told me how damaged and ugly my hair was, and told me I needed more treatments etc.
    I knew it was a pushy sales tactic so I would buy more services, but it still got to me, I even cried when I got home.
    I came there to look good, feel good, but ended up having the worst day because I felt so insecure.

      Thats awful, i modelled for my first hairdressers I had beautiful curly hair. I cried the whole time, it was long, she wasnt meant to be cutting it, just styling i didn't notice the scissors in her hand. She waa a tranee , she took my hair back into a ponytail and Chop.ishouted STOP. Long story short, i ended up having to have it cut. I've never been back since thats 18 years ago. I go to a small hairdressers in the UK , their clients are very age ranged, but mostly quite old, one lady i talk to is in her 90's shes so with it. Tells me im beautiful every time i see her. I stress for days before i go. xxx💖💗💝🐕🐾🐾

    I love what you said at the end of this video! I think part of the intimidation of salons is not fitting into the “traditional” expectation of beauty - whether it be clothes, weight, wrinkles on my face, etc, and the judgement that might come with it in an environment where “beauty” is the main commodity.
    I also dislike salons in which it seems like you are walking into a clique in which you don’t know anyone. Sometimes the stylists gossip amongst themselves (or even just the stylist and her assistant), and it feels like you are interrupting their time with the service that YOU are paying for! This is why I love my current stylist - she doesn’t have an assistant and has a private room, so she pays 100% attention to me and my hair and is wonderful. 😊

    I personally am always scared to go to the salon because unfortunately I’ve had bad experiences not receiving what I asked for.
    I am actually a licensed cosmetologist so I could communicate in my consults what I wanted but the stylist just wasn’t able to preform what we agreed upon. I wanted balayage and she didn’t tell me the truth about never performing that service before. (I live in a small town with mostly retirement age women).
    I left the salon paying for chunky streaks and level 2 roots :( I ended up fixing my hair myself.
    I know this wouldn’t happen in every salon but I just have trust issues now and only do my own hair. i’d rather be mad at myself for messing up my hair then someone else and paying $$ for it. Granted, my situation is different since I am licensed..

    • @reesen1497

      Same thing happened to me! I asked for balayage, and they had never done it before and gave me untoned, orange streaks. I’m not licensed or anything, but I don’t go to professionals for my hair anymore. I either cut/color it myself or have my friends do it lol

    I have trichotillomania (it's a mental health condition that causes you to pull out your hair, similar to skin picking). I've been managing pretty well, but I'm still mortified when I go to a new stylist. I have a lot of breakage that's due to my own behavior and not the health of my hair. I know a lot of people with severe trich avoid going to the hairdresser. It would be nice if there was more awareness among hair stylists. I'm sure people would seek out a stylist who was trich-friendly over feeling judged or uncomfortable.

    I love the salon and my hair dresser, but my experience with embarrassment with salons is financial. I hate to be the person that cant afford what I want or need and constantly having to say "oh that's too much I cant do that." I understand their time is worth what they're asking etc and I don't want to make them feel like I dont want to pay them or I don't think they're worthy its just a $150 salon trip isn't always doable.

    • @tiffanymichelle3130
      @tiffanymichelle3130 5 років тому +5

      I agree. Hence why if you’re doing an all over color, I just do it at home. I see zero difference. In fact, I can make sure I’m covering all my greys. Many times the stylist have missed the grey on my temples. And for $150 that’s unacceptable. And the stylist never gets all the color out of my scalp or off of my skin and ears.

    • @cathyc2665

      @Make Up Ur Mood I have 80 to 90 % gray . My gray starts showing its ugly roots in about a week and I can't afford root coverage every 4-5 weeks. I love my stylists, her work and her as a person, but why can't I get a little discount? She knows I'll be back more frequently if it didn't cost me a hundred bucks or so everytime I come in just for covering my roots?!! I've finally learned how to do my roots at home to save a bundle of money that I just can't shell out. I do however have an appointment in a couple of weeks for a fresh bayalage!

    • @lexienicole1458
      @lexienicole1458 5 років тому +4

      Cathy 0124 why would you expect a discount, ever? This is her craft and her livelihood. Would it be okay if she asked you for discounts at your job even though she might come in every month? Nope. Look at it more like a career and not a hobby and you’d understand more. Go to someone cheaper if it bothers you instead of asking for discounts because it’s an insult as a hairstylist.

    When I go to a salon I expect the stylist to be knowledgeable. A stylist should be able to tell me what hairstyle would look best on me according to my hair type, head shape, face shape, and lifestyle. From my experience, most have no clue. I can't even consider having my hair colored.

    • @lexiemery5182
      @lexiemery5182 5 років тому +14

      Sophie Laurenti I think the trouble with that situation is A lot of what looks “good” on someone is just opinion based. And your stylist likes and opinions could be greatly different than yours.
      Yes certain tones might compliment better but that tone can be found in so many different colors.
      And when giving the stylist no point of reference in your preferences makes it challenging to choose something you will be pleased with.
      Example could be---- I personally love dark hair with fair skin it very much has a Snow White appeal to me.
      So if a client says “Choose what you think would look nice”
      I might pick a dark color (warm or cool which ever undertone suits her)
      And then she could feel very washed out by the color if she was used to or imaging herself with a lighter color.

    • @JClover2
      @JClover2 5 років тому

      I agree 100%. It should be their job to tell you what they think looks good given your features and their experience. It's then up to the client to say if it's a go or no. A lot of European salon stylists do that but American ones are very hesitant from what I've experienced.

    Hey! Thanks for the video, it was very educational. I do love salons too, but I have suffered a lot from hairdressers who just don't want to listen. I want something, show them a picture, they say OK and do something totally different. This is why I dread going to salons and this is why I do my hair at home and I learn from awesome videos like this one. Several times a hair dresser has colored roots I especially said I want to let grow and not to colour them under any circumstances. Even now a salon caught my eye and I checked them on Instagram and their work looks great, but I am nervous to go. So yeah... Mixed feelings. But salons are totally fun! I just dream of finding the right hairdresser for me :)

    Thank you for bringing up the fear of the salon. I always enjoyed going and getting my hair done. I never felt embarrassed or intimidated until just over a year ago when I cinged my bangs and my right side. Because it happened at night, I trimmed it and did a great job, that one time. Feeling empowered, I thought all I'd need to do is watch some DIY tutorials and I could be my own stylist. Well, for more than a year now, I'm too embarrassed to go to the salon and get this mess fixed. 2 weeks ago, I really made a boo boo and had to cut it extremely short- pixie short. I'm sick and embarrassed and I don't know where to turn for help without judgement.

    Hi Silvia, thanks again for another great video. I work with autistic adults, lots of who have sensory issues which make hairdressers a nightmare for them - all the sounds, smells, bright lights, touch and expectations for social interaction. They might also have traumatic associations from visits to hairdressers as a child for the same reason. Given the US prevalence rate for autism is estimated as 1 in 68, it would make a huge difference to a lot of people if you found out more about this and were able to offer a low-arousal area in salons for them to visit. Happy to advise if you want me to.

    • @GenXer333
      @GenXer333 5 років тому +3

      So true. Both of my kids have autism, but I've been cutting their hair myself since they were little ones (25 yrs). They only want me to cut it (I'm like a pro barber now), but the few times I have taken them to a barber, they didn't like it. I would call ahead and explain to them that they have autism, and ask if they have ever worked with clients who are on the spectrum. If they have a friendly and warm demeanor on the phone, and seem understanding, I'll give them a chance. If they act like you're wasting their time, or seem like their not taking what you say into account, then nope.

A lot of breakage, but I finally got a decent color love I like 😍

    i've had a lot more bad experiences than good in salons. i cant say how many times i asked for a trim on my, down to my butt, long hair and got it up to my shoulders. the last time i set foot in a salon i asked for bangs so the stylist picked up a chunk of hair from my crown and chopped it and then said 'there ya happy?' . ive been doing my own hair ever since and cant say what will ever change my mind. i think you're definitely an exception to the rule because if more stylist were like you i wouldn't have had a mullet that day, haha

    Not afraid of the salon, afraid of what the stylist/ colorist will do to my hair. I've had one fry my hair, another cut off 8 inches when I only wanted a trim, wanted red and I got orange. I've started coloring my own hair, and I couldn't be happier with the results! I've also seen, on fb, on posts made by the place where I buy my color, cosmotologists putting down people for not only what you said, but for their haircuts also. One said it looked like people did their own hair with a flobee... my spelling is probably wrong because I don't know what it is. They're extremely rude to say the least. People read things like that and I can see how they'd be afraid to try a new salon.

    I had so many bad experiences in salons as a teenager, that at one point I decided to never go again and do my hair myself. After a decade my hair was so damaged because of box dyes and heat, that I had no choice but to go to a hairdresser. Sadly, my next two experiences weren't good as well: The first one just lied about what she could do to my hair, so I payed a lot of money but after two hair washes the color slipped right out of my hair, leaving me again with weird blond-greenish patches in my overall brown hair. The second lady I went to started to rant about me and other 'girls' (I'm a woman, not a girl, but whatever) in general that damage their hair and then expect her to fix it and blabla. This was the worst I ever experienced, I wanted to run out of the salon right away but she already had applied some product, so well, I was just sitting there shocked and silently questioning her career choices and started to cry as soon as I was out of the salon. Uff. But well, I couldn't give up, cause there was no way I could fix my hair by myself. So I went to yet another hairdresser and FINALLY this one was just plain upfront about what she could do with my hair, what the process will be and how long it will take (months!), but she also calmed me down and said that my hair totally could be fixed and that she had seen already way worse. It felt so good that there was someone honest and actually caring, and guess what, even after the first session my hair was better than ever before. I was and am still so thankful, cause she gave me some faith back. But well, not all (in my experiences most) hair dressers are like her and you, so it's really a tough journey to go on (I actually have to look for a new hair dresser, cause I feel like my current one hit the limits of her competence and won't be able to give me my desired hair color).

    Thanks for the informative video! I think one of the biggest negatives for me about going to the salon is that the end result is never really how you have described it to the hair dresser. Its as if they dont really listen to what you want. Ok, i know that you can't always have what you want, but they dont always explain why or say what would look better in their opinion.Especially when it comes to cutting/styling you can be really upset by what they consider suits you, rather than what you actually want. I find this happens more as you get older. (like age dosent matter)

    I recently had a negative experience at a salon. I went for a change in color. And when my hair was all done I wasn't happy with the color. It wasn't light enough. (I am already Blonde so it wasn't like I need to go back a few times to achieve the color I was looking for) Ok so I'm sure from time to time it happens someone is happy. But what I didn't like was that the girl who did my hair went around and told everyone I wasn't happy with my hair as if I did something wrong. She should have kept it between us, offer to fix it with out all the fuss. She did fix my hair and I'll never go back !

    wonderful video! I love going to the salon when I have the money to go to a great stylist. When my budget is tight and I have to go somewhere that isn't as "high end" or has less experienced stylists, I am alway so scared bc something always goes wrong. I end up only halfway liking the results which is super frustrating. Especially when I have to come home and totally redo my blowout and style. Even worse is when I am to afraid to ask for them to fix my color or the cut.

    I don’t dread going to the salon now but when I was younger, I had a tough time communicating with the hairdressers because I didn’t know their terms and would always leave with a cut I didn’t like due to lack of communication and I feel like the hairdresser would just do what they thought looked good on me without clarifying what I wanted. That was when I was young (teens) and was raised by a single dad and would often go to the salon solo but now as an adult, I am much more confident to make sure that they understand what I want.

    I've had a few bad experiences with rude hairdressers or awkward ones which is sooo bad for me because I have social anxiety. I need small talk or I just feel sooo uncomfortable. Also had a few times where my hairs not turned out quite how I wanted but it's that thing where I just smile and say thanks. Obv that's my problem for not speaking up. My stepdads hair was white all over by 27 so it's definitely not always age. X

    I’ve been to the salon before with hair dye that albeit it was no professional I didn’t mind it was purple and pink and I loved it, hairdresser was not shy in telling me it was a mess.. the same salon later down the line gave me chemical burns on my scalp when I paid a lot of money to have my hair professionally dyed purple all over, they highlighted some parts and burned my scalp 🙃

    NOW sadly I’m scared to go into a salon and even scared to do anything to my hair because my hairstylist who I’ve gone to multiple times just FRIED OFF THE ENDS OF SOME PIECES OF MY HAIR AND LET ME WALK OUT WITHOUT TELLING ME...I found out after showering and seeing that I had shorter pieces throughout my hair...not having cut layers...I’ve had a lob for over a year. (and there wasn’t pieces coming out in the shower or when I brushed my hair) It’s horror stories like that which intimidate people from going into a salon. And I’ve always loved hair and almost went to school for it but ended up going to university instead.

    I had a hairdresser a week ago, and all she did was just berate me for bleaching my own hair. And she was talking about how brassy it was, and how Miscolored it was. And she was the only person who came down on me so hard. Everyone else said it looked pretty good considering I did it on my own, and I also removed a ton of red out. LOL so unfortunately, some hairdressers are really judgemental and downright hateful. Of course I won’t go back there. I had to go yesterday and have another stylist fix what she messed up cut wise. 😂😂

    I'm gonna tell you about my hair salon experience, i used to go every week to get my nails done at my salon and my hair once a month. When I was getting my nails done on Thursday the phone rang and it was a customer that I saw every single Thursday it was an older lady, The salon owner hung up the phone and told a group of ladies about five of them here comes Mary every time she comes I think it's her last shave! They all laughed at her and 15 minutes later Mary walked through the door she was a beautiful older lady I would say in her 80s that I saw every single Thursday it broke my heart. I never went back to the salon again and I cut all ties with my hairdresser. Fast forward seven years I decided to get my hair highlighted for Mother's Day and I went to the salon on my block, my hair is down to my waist and I ran into an old friend there, First thing she said to me was you need to cut your hair you have a witch vibe going on. I was mortified no I did not cut my hair and no I have not been back.

    My natural hair color is a dark brown. I went to one hair stylist at a different salon who dyed my hair to a medium/light brown & then put bleach on it all in one session. She said that my hair won't go from dark to light just with bleach. My hair stylist now did the same thing so I stopped getting my hair dyed and bleached from her or any hair stylist. I only have her cut my hair now. I've been watching your videos on how to dye/bleach your hair at home so for the past 3 1/2 years I've been doing my own hair. The last time I went to get my hair cut she told me not to do highlights on my hair anymore because it doesn't look good & the time before that she said to me "you know that I don't like that hair color on you." I understand she's a professional hair stylist & I'm sure she knows what's best but there all plenty of women that go from a dark brown to blonde so why can't I.

    Just wanted to touch base on you not being able to comprehend people being intimidated by salons... I’m one of those even though I absolutely love getting my hair done. I still, at 40, feel trepidation going to get anything done to my hair bc I have had so many mishaps with my hair. I don’t like to change stylists unless absolutely necessary, but there are times that my amazing then-stylist will be having an off day and completely do what SHE wants to my hair. So it’s like roulette for me. That’s my reasoning 🙃

    I don't know why most people say it's less stressful to color their hair themselves. I'm someone who is so nit picky about every aspect of my hair that if I had to do it myself I would be questioning myself and wondering if I did a good job, missed anything, ect. If I go to a salon sure, I still nit pick at the stylist doing my hair and give her exact instructions and ask questions throughout the hair process but it is so much easier on me mentally to know that the physical work is not my concern and that they have everything they need instead of me going out and thinking of what I do or don't need.

    Mine is because bad experiences. Even going to “good” more expensive salons, either they cut my hair too short after I asked for a trim of 1/2 in. They remove 1-2 inches. I asked the last place I went to dust my hair, I explained it the way you showed in a video, they said oh yeah I know what you mean we call it_____.. ok well he proceeded to remove chunks of my underhair layer like he was thinning my hair.. it took almost a year for the new hair to finally blend into my hair now. Also found that even after spending 125 bucks for color, it is t that great, kind of one dimensional, not healthy looking etc, had highlights refreshed and asked to add darker roots and asked to baylage (sp). So my hair looked more like natural golden dirty blonde (showed picture) cost me 175 bucks. (I was already bleach blond) and I ended up with chunky brown and blonde highlights!! Ugh! So now I’m embracing my old lady hair, finding out what lies beneath lol and I trim my hair at home.

    I have naturally 3b and 3c textured hair and I’ve had two good salon experiences out of about 10. It’s so hard to find a good stylist for my hair type in my area. I really wish that more hairdressers had experience with my type of hair and even coarser hair because I feel almost out of place at a salon. I know some Caucasian women have hair types like mine and I feel that it would be beneficial to both me and someone like you to have more knowledge with my hair type. (Not saying that you don’t have that knowledge) I’ve tried for years to find someone that does good box braids even and I have yet to find that person.

I love to see you're so passionate about being a hairdresser. I am GOOD at it but it wasn't my passion. I still wanted to help people though, and now I'm a Nutritionist :D I LOVE it & I'm still learning from some of the very best people (doctors and scientists)... it's like I can't get enough of the information out there. I do color my hair because I have hereditary premature pigmentation loss in my hair. The good thing is, with white hair I get to choose what hair color I want to have. Your videos helped me finally decide to go blonde. I have curly thick hair but the strands are very thin. I struggle so much with trying to find someone who can work with my hair type. When I straighten my hair this wasn’t an issue. Honestly every time I go to the salon they cut more than I ask and I walk out feeling like I have too much product in my hair and the style needs to be washed immediately. The last person who cut my hair is a curly hair specialist and I ended up cutting my own hair when I got home. 60$ wasted. After that experience, I started cutting my own hair. It’s been years since someone has cut or colored my hair.

    I had the most wonderful hairdresser years ago and she moved away. I have been struggling to find someone else so have been bouncing around. Going to the salon costs me a mint to do a cut and colour, and I’m sick of paying top dollar for a relatively mediocre job, so I occasionally do some colours at home. Sometimes it isn’t the workmanship, it’s the bedside manner. The last lady that cut my hair was “tisk tisk, you should get regular cuts” I’m pretty sure that was exactly the reason why I was there. But I would never let my “inner smart arse” out in front of someone with scissors *laughs awkwardly *. I am still in search of my “hair-mate”
    I did like your Dr analogy, but after all the crap I have done at home to my hair, it would be more like me going to the Dr after trying to heal a cut on my arm with salt and lemon. She would most definitely say “stop doing that” , which is what we are afraid of hearing. So we lie and say “I woke up this morning and it felt like my arm was on fire, for some reason unbeknownst to me”

    So just saying, lol, I'm one that has not stepped into a salon in years, because I am scarred!! Lol, I looovveee going to a salon, but the lady we all went to growing up retired when I was about 15, so for a few years we (when I say we, I mean my mom, myself, and my 2 sisters) tried to find somewhere new, and when I tell you every place we went they screwed my hair up, I was better off screwing it up myself. When I say from cut, to color, to style, to being scared for my homecoming, it was bad. And now even as an adult I get so anxious to go to a salon that I will do my hair myself until I'm tired of the only cut I can properly do, or until my hair is really damaged that I can't fix it. I know that's bad, but so were my experiences, I just don't want to keep trying as I obviously don't have luck, lol 💞

    I've had 1 good experience with a hair dresser, he did exactly what I asked. Unfortunately I moved to a different state and couldn't bring him with me (lol). All the other times I have had to redo my hair after I got home. The very last time I went to get a trim, the first thing the hair dresser said was "lets get rid of the birds nest on the top of your hair ". Needless to say I got up and walked out, never to return. I haven't been back to any professional since. I just don't understand why they can't do just the trim that I ask for.
    I'm sure there are others out there who would be awesome, but I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to go looking for the perfect one. I've been cutting my own hair since I moved away from the person who cut my hair perfectly every time.
    Such is life.. I'm happy with the results because I cut it like I want it.
    Don't get me wrong, I know there's a lot of hair dresser that do amazing work, I just wish I could find one without spending a fortune looking for him/her.
    Peace and love

    I love going to salons and getting my hair done. Always have since I got my drivers license at 16. I am 50 now. I had good experiences and some disappointing ones but I keep going. And if my budget allowed I would go every week for a blowout!! I personally enjoy all your videos 😘😘😘!!

    Hi!! I thought I might add that protein packs should not be left on very long.... especially overnight!!!!!! Too much protein will cause your hair to break!!!!!!!♥️

    I love going to the salon. It’s like a day out with the girls to me. 👍😺😺

    In my experience, I tend to leave the salon with something different than what I wanted. I understand that not everything is possible because of different undertones. The places I have been to don't explain why they could not achieve it. Or the hair language gets in the way, they may have thought I wouldn't understand or something.. lol I am trying someone new tomorrow, hopefully it goes well!!!

    I always avoided the salon bc I have really long hair (middle of my butt long) and I would always either get charged an insane amount for what I requested (trim, highlights- at least $350 for a trim which boggles my mind and more than half a grand with highlights) and I would always leave the salon with wet hair bc they say my hair is too long to style. It was always so disappointing so I never go and just try to treat my hair as well as possible and use good hair scissors when trimming and shaping at home.

    I love going to my hair dresser!! She is the best! I've been her client for probably 20yrs.

    I have now had two hairdressers belittle me for dying my own hair. Not everyone wants to pay $200 for a dye job, and you shouldn’t be made to feel bad for doing something to your own head. I know you would never make fun of someone for dying their own hair, but unfortunately many other hairdressers do, and that makes people nervous to go to some salons.
