Suggestion: I think the cat doesn’t like the instability of the sphere...it might be more stable if you put a 5 or 10 pound disc weight (like you use on bar-bells) under the blanket. Looks great! I’ll bet you could make an interesting lamp shade that way, too :-)

When you want to remove the beach ball, squeeze the opened valve between middle and forefinger, the press against side of ball.. Squeezing the valve opens it so that air will pass out. It takes a few minutes to deflate but saves ruining the beachball. Great project!

You could put something round instead of the legs under the cat sphere eg a pool noodle shaped into a wreath form (which you could cover with twine or something similar to the cat house). Then the cat sphere would balance on this and it should stay fairly stable. I actually thought of this when you were struggling to keep it still at the start of the wrapping. Even a bucket would have worked to stabilise the beach ball. Then you could make a large bean bag for the middle empty section of the circular stand. This would further help to stabilise the cat house.

Could the need for wooden "feet" be eliminated if a person initially put two metal loops on the beachball, one at the opening and one at the floor? Then, after the modge podge is applied and the beach ball removed, the person could weave the fiber rush across the floor hole and either leave it unglued or modge podge it up, depending on how solid the floor needs to be.

    • @TheCrisses

It's probably the mod podge smell. It needs to air out a lot longer. I also thought of paper mache. Wheat paste instead of modpodge - much cheaper. And the cat probably wants it to be much darker inside. It doesn't want to feel exposed like that - maybe if it was like "under a bush" level of darkness.
Also there are bush cats and tree cats. Maybe this is a tree cat, and doesn't like the under-bush feel.

This was such a great idea/project. I think I would have done a couple of things differently. I think I’ll try making a water/glue solution and soak the rope in that first and then wrap the beach ball with the glue soaked rope. This way, the rope should dry sturdier since the glue is on all sides of the rope. Also, instead of rounding the bottoms of the legs, square them off, hopefully that would make it more stable? Guess I’ll have to try this for myself, which I for sure am going to do. Thanks for the video. :)

The bottom of the legs needs to be flat and cut at a slight angle to make it stable on the floor. Two longer legs at the front, two shorter at the back would stabilize the bed. You could eyeball the angle or measure 📐 it.

Love this! My sister by another mister! I love it when a person sets out to solve a problem with creativity. That's my kind of problem. So many craft videos are about what pictures to stick on which freshly purchased, mass produced box (stuff like that).
A couple of years ago I bought a range of plastic crochet hoops, big balls of cotton yarn (stupid solution number one - cotton rots quite quickly when exposed to the elements), a bottle of latex, and the biggest balloons I could find. I wanted to make drays (homes/beds) for the local red squirrels (they're endangered and protected and relatively numerous near me) to fasten high in a tree that's in my garden. I was seeing and pondering those wicker balls, too! I have fastened a shop bought, ready made, squirrel 'house' but nothing likes it.
I started off crocheting, trying to make a ball shape with a round opening, with the cotton and the hoops. Didn't get too far in before I was concerned about how heavy the thing would get (particularly if the latex didn't waterproof it) and how long it's operational life would be. The round 'wicker' ball was what I was basing it on. It would have been perfect. My project ceased, after my doubts built up, and I'm still trying to figure out how to make drays to put in my tree. This is it, though. You've showed me the way!
What is 'spodge podge', though? Is it a type of glue? Would it work better, and last longer, outdoors than natural latex? Why was spodge podge selected?
My drays - I want them to look pleasing. It's not all about functionality. They do have to be functional, though. They need to be safe and sound for the squirrels. Quite discreet - the squirrels might not like anything too obvious. Quite easy to tie onto the tree, also, as I have a bit of a fear of falling to my death!
So, that is 'poly rush' (don't know what that is, either) and spodge podge? Would it be waterproof? I presume it doesn't get heavy even if the weaving is so tight that there are few or no gaps?

This randomly came up on my feed. Two things I might do differently. First, I would spray the fiber rush with a mixture water and isopropyl alcohol so that the mod podge will flow into the fiber rush through capillary action, so there is less glue on the beach ball. Secondly, some cats prefer cat houses with two entrance/exits, and this technique would be idea for that. Great project!

Ideas to improve on your wonderful idea and design...
    1. Hang the ring with the beach ball tape to it and weave it with it suspended...kind of macrame' style.
    2. Put the roll of rush in a laundry basket or some such next to you to keep it from running off.
    3. Coat it with matte clear polyurethane instead of Modge Podge. A quart of this is a fraction of the cost and it will be wipeable and waterproof where Modge Podge is not.
    4. Cut a circle or square of wood the same width of the ball and four wedges of 2x4 wood to stabilize the bottom. Position and mark where the wedges need to be on the board and secure in place, then mount to the ball. This will make it so stable that even the most frisky of kitties will not be able to knock it over.
Note: This ball design would also be awesome integrated into the design of a cat tree, either hanging or mounted to one of the platforms.

Then put a circular fabric covered cushion it it (same size as the plywood disc) Nice Video and cute idea. I have 5 cats so a project like this would keep me busy until the apocalypse.

How I made mine- Soaking fabric strips/rope in wet concrete mix and use that vs this fiber. then after it’s dry buy some clear sillicone caulk and thin it with mineral spirits and paint it on. Let it dry then do another coat.
It will then be rigid/waterproof and you can paint the sillicone caulk mixture you applied.
I attached legs then wrapped them in more cement soaked fabric which could be wound around and inside… very stable after drying!!
Buy beach balls at dollar tree so they aren’t a waste of several dollars whe you cut them :)

Ok, here’s a tip if anyone is interested…once you have the twine tied on. Use a tub a little bit bigger then the balloon and add a 1/4 cup or less of water to the modge podge to make it go further. You can then pour the MP over the balloon…

A little late, but I would've wet the rush first by dipping it into water before wrapping. That way you could pull it tighter and it dries tighter and you won't need to use as much glue. I used the exact same rush to re-seat my antique ladder back chair. Dunking it in water is what's suggested and a game changer.

Could the need for wooden "feet" be eliminated if you initially put two metal loops on the beachball, one at the opening and one at the floor? Then, after the modge podge is applied and the beach ball removed, you could weave the fiber rush across the floor hole and either leave it unglued or modge podge it up, depending on how solid the floor needs to be.

Be paincent! It took my cat 2 months before he gave it a chance and now I can't get him out of it! I found it easier to stick the ring to the ball as you did but just wrap the whole thing in string and when it came to the mod podge just don't do the bits inside the ring, let it dry then cut the string in the middle so you have long bits that are still attached and use them to wrap the ring. Hope that makes sense. I also made a base from cardboard by cutting strips that slowly got wider and glueing them to make a circle, start with the narrow ones first so it makes a sort of bowl for the ball to sit in, it's much more stable than putting legs on and it's warmer for the cat. By the way love Penny ❤️

  • @dentednj

I think you could cut a plywood circle, cut it in half if needed to fit through your entrance hole and reattach w glue, etc. or piano hinge it together again, then attach the legs through the mesh onto the board so in essence you are making a tripod stool platform for strength with the wicker surrounding it. Your cat bed looks great!

This can be made cheaper by not buying it at Rockler which is an over-priced woodworking supply store. Using heavy-duty 1/8" or 3/16" twine will hold up just as well. I have made lamp shades from 1/8" twine before and they have held up very well, though they do not get the same type of use as a cat bed would. Thanks for sharing the idea though. I think Ivwill try to make one this afternoon for my cat Salem. At the end of last summer season, I purchased several of the beach balls/ kick balls that we're 1/2 off for lamp shades my cousin wanted me to make for her. And when I made the shades for myself 5 years back, I had found a great deal on large spools of 1/8" and 3/8" at an auction. I paid $5 & $10 for each spool containing 8,000 ft & 5000 ft and still have a lot left.
(FYI-Construction auctions are a good source for items such as rope, paint, electrical supplies, steel, I weld, and fasteners.)

There are lots of great suggestions throughout the comments too…it’s so refreshing to have so many people with NICE, helpful comments and constructive feedback:-). Oh my goodness, your kitty looks so much like my Purrl! Purrl has a little bit more of the calico patterning with stripes than the white that your kitty has, and her markings on her face have more of the black and orange. So awesome to see another kitty with similar markings! I remember when we saw her as a kitten -- the lady who rescued her, my mom and I, and the vet techs, pretty much everyone, has been struck by her unique fur with the calico colors and stripes. She's very energetic and can be kind of scrappy, but she's also very sweet.
As for the basket, I think it looks great! It makes a nice piece of rustic decor in addition to being a cat bed. I don't know if my cats would sleep in it, but I can almost guarantee that they'd exercise their claws on it and try to make it roll around to chase it like a cat ball. They might eventually come around to using it for its intended purpose, especially with a comfy pillow inside (and maybe some treats to lure them in....). Otherwise, it could be a cute holder for their toys. :-)

I imagine you'd have to have the hanging ropes/chains/whatever link up beneath the ball. Would the weight of a cat, in this ball if it's hanging, just be the end of the bottom of it? It would just deform and, eventually, come apart? Cat would be in a ball, one day, an egg shape the next. A tangle of strings, the next. :)

Pro tip... use a narrow set of tweezers. Or something sturdy enough to hold the valve piece open, but shaped like V or a U so it won't fall in. If that doesn't do the trick, add a snappy hair clip to hold the outside of the valve flatter to keep it from closing. Then tape down the tweezer like thing so it doesn't risk being sucked into the vacuum and away you go. Also, hold the valve open with your good hand and then push and peel (Never thought I'd say the opposite of Twizzlers lol) with your other hand.
I'm going to try this myself this week. And I'm really lucky that I've got two chairs that I don't use, need or want... and guess what the seats are made of?!
So I'm going to upcycyle them from one form of cat bed into another form of cat bed. And I can even use the frame of the chair for any feet I might need.
Only thing I'm missing is Modge Podge Matte and a hoop large enough for my boys.

I would suggest attaching the cord with the paper mache method. It's pre-wet and will stick better. Also, hang the beach ball from above so you have an easier time wrapping the cord. You can add more poge (?) or watered down Elmer's Glue, when you're finished wrapping and wait until it dries. POP the beach ball and tada..........kitty bed. Well worth the time.

Also I think if you had a larger strainer to sit the ball on, pouring mod podge over a container that could collect the mod podge that dropped off. Use a small amount at first and keep using the drippings to brush over spots that weren’t reached with the pouring. Such a great idea!! I hope my daughter and her boyfriend decide to make this.
