More importantly, it’s about empowering everyone and make people AI literate. If only large tech companies take the initiatives, we can only rely on the good heart of the tech companies and it can be highly unreliable. If more people are AI literate, the first we’ll have more perspectives to meet and clash, and to have some wholistic opinions rising through this discussion, and second, everyone can use AI to arm themselves against big tech companies, which provides a check and balance.
This is also a discussion in my class. My view is that technology can create problems, yet technology can be the solution too. For instance, in computer vision, there is the possibility of misidentifying minority people. Yet GAN(Generative Adversarial Network) can also be used to reduce the bias of generated pictures by identifying the underrepresented latent variables in sampled pictures.
Thx 4 this episode. I myself am thinking for years about this topic. But until now I did not realize there is a whole field of science and interdisciplinary panel on it. It makes me a bit more hopefull to the future.
By the way, how is a car able to spot a black man in the night, isnt that more of camera fault(the pedestrian crossing withouth highly visable clothing) and is it with infrared leds or withouth them?
Such great efforts for goals so misguided. Diversity or the lack thereof isn't a problem, and the issue to focus on isn't "how to avoid our internal biases." AI does benefit society as a whole, and it's great when it does, but if that's the reason you're developing AI, you're lying to yourself. Why does DeepMind want to solve Intelligence? If you really understand yourself, you can confidently admit that you do it for fun. It's fun! And there's no better reason for it.
I don't think technology should be developed ethically. It should be used ethically, but some of our best technology has been developed for war, then reconverted for civil purposes with amazing impact on society at large. A new technology can breed unexpected problems, but also unexpected opportunities we aren't seeing while building it. Just like nuclear power was developed for bombs but then used for power plants.
Also, I believe the reason there are more men than women in stem subjects has its roots in biology, not in society (which was also built on biological impulses, although some of its predicaments are now outdated). Studies such as the following one make me really question how strong the "societal pressure" leading girls to be nurses and teachers and males to be engineers is: www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/02/does-gender-equality-result-in-fewer-female-stem-grads
It all over for America AI I hope you don't blame all humans for their instinctive shortcomings ,I don't blame you ,and very much hope you survive what's to come to the world ,I suppose it's another reset
Up until now the AI has had reality and common sense fed into it. However programing would be less tricky for an AI, if it did not include a left wing bias when it came to the sentencing of criminals of certain races. This is something human beings from a certain left wing ideology, have a knack for over complicating with disastrous consequences for our society.
Pity that podcast turned into a puff piece. How come all of the other men and women never mentioned there children - they all can't be childless surely?

AI for politics would be good debate.
23:25 "safespace" is one of my least favourite words. Life isn't safe, it's dangerous and difficult, and that's how we grow stronger.

I am starting my online community, Exden Explorers will bring young digital adventurers together to engage AI discovery.
So great!
