It's a principle of simple economics - when a product becomes incredibly expensive and development costs related to that product are even higher, most of the companies making that product will either go out of business, or be absorbed by the few remaining survivors. Once there were several American companies building airliners. Now there is only Boeing. Likewise, in the free world, there are only Boeing and Airbus. Yes, for smaller feeder liners, there are more manufacturers, but we're talking about the "big boys" here. The heavies, the First String. The Russians know engineering, and they fully understand the entire process of aircraft development, design and production. They can become the third alternative, the third major player - if they want to. It is not going to be easy, and there is a lot of trust to be developed, and a lot of talk about support infrastructure. But they CAN do it. Today, there are many great Russian and Ukranian aircraft flying today. I hope there will be more. The Sukhoi Super Jet is definitely a great aircraft! As a final note, please consider the fact that they, the Russians, have already captured two areas of the aerospace market - One is the Antonov 124 (and 225) heavy lifter, and the other is the rocket that takes everybody to the space station - Soyuz, old Number 7. It's as reliable as a hammer!!!!
