Amazing. Found this UA-camr right at the sweet spot. She’s pro enough to make the actual video look good, good audio AND she’s straight to the point. No added time for ads and sponsors etc
🤞🏼 the best of luck to you, great work.

I was worried that my story was too 'childish' for YA but too violent for MG. Now I'm pretty sure it's in the funky category of teen. Thanks for the help!

I just asked this question at my local writer's workshop. Not sure if my science fiction can be considered middle grade, YA, or adult.
The person I asked said it mostly depends on the age of the characters.

Really helpful thank you! I've developed a graphic novel concept which I've put as MG/YA but now I think is actually just YA. We'll see what my agent says!
Also, YA - to avoid preachiness, use real life experiences rather than the "shiny moral idea of what life should be or look like". Humanise and ground the characters as a fallible people with flaws that we can all relate to, just use your own life experiences without sugar coating them and be honest!!!

"Aggressively gendered"... nice phrase. Some years ago took my 7-year-old daughter to buy some athletic/play clothes. Talk about aggressively gendered! I had no idea how department stores were driving (shoving?) gendered clothing and identity into the culture. She had no interest in pink foo-foo, so we wandered the boy's department, confused and mystified by the sudden awareness of the steel wall of societal gender coding and separation. We've a long way to go... Anyway, thanks for the informative and helpful overview of these genres.

something does not add up here. For readers up to 7 years old the maximum word count is 5.000 but for readers of 8 years and older the minimum word count is 30.000? So... nobody reads books with a wordcount between 5.000 and 30.000 words?
shouldnt it be the other way around? An overlap of word count between the age groups instead a dividing gap?
