Attahk was my first MAGMA album. A friend copied it from vinyl to cassette. The last Track Nono is great. Now, 40 years later, Magma is still one of my absolute favorite bands. Now we have digitally remastered versions where you can hear the spirit of the music better than ever.
Great pick, one of my personal favourite Magma tracks. Yes, it's not quite as impactful or hypnotic as one of their 20+ minute suites, but it still packs a punch and captures the essence of their demented operatic space-funk vibe. De Futura next, perhaps?
Christian Vander's bass drum is a pure 16 inch jazz one and it isn't muffled so it just sounds like a bass tomtom. Listen to the track name Maahnt from the same album, you'll hear an amazing rendition of a "monster" like you describe. The song is subtitled "The Wizard fights the Devil". Funny track.
In case you wanted visuals to go with it, here's one iteration of the band performing a fairly faithful rendition in 2005: ua-cam.com/video/qJgR-QUOh0M/v-deo.html Note that on the original album the drummer did most of the vocals, with just a little help from Magma's original (and best) singer. Most of the vocals for this were improvised live in the studio--the 2005 version (lead vocals by the son of a former Magma bassist with backing vocals from his daughter) simply follows the model and tries to replicate it as closely as possible.
Zeuhl is absolutely fascinating music. You should definitely listen to some longer track. How about this live version of "Theusz Hamtaahk" (it was never recorded in studio)? ua-cam.com/video/rbXi7WN5n-c/v-deo.html This is a video from their 30th anniversary concert; you definitely have to see Magma play to get the full impact of Zeuhl. Skip to 1:30 in the video; the first 90 seconds are of the audience getting in.
Yeah, you've done Alcest and Gojira. They're both French, too! 🇫🇷 P.S. This song gave me anxiety, but also made me want to drink mimosas. 🍹 P.P.S. HR Geiger also did album art for Emerson Lake & Palmer and Debbie Harry. I have a poster of _Brain_ _Salad_ _Surgery_ in my mudroom. 😆
Man I've been looking forward to this! Glad you enjoyed it. I think what sets them apart from other prog groups is that their riffs are so dog simple a day one student could play them, but it's still interesting because their compositional technique is flawless. They're like the Carl Orff of 70s prog.
I have an injoke with a friend that Magma kind of sounds like the best damn prog rock band out of Tatooine. This is what Luke Skywalker would go to see if they were ever touring around Mos Eisley.
I should have Saïd zeuhl wortz. "I have eternally wowed m'y material and immatériel being to Magma, to create music that defies time, to Uniweria Zekt and to Kreuhn Kormahn for the reste... Christian Vander Zebhen Strain De Geustaah "
The 2005 performance of this song on epok III is one of the most masterful performances of all time. It's like they took nearly 3 decades to purify its essence. It's perfect.
An acquired taste - but this was pretty cool! As far as I know MAGMA sang in an artifical language that was made to sound slightly Germanic and Slavic and mechanical - anyways, it's not French.
I have no idea who this band are. Let's go! Oh... Between The Buried and Me just released an excellent album-Colours 2....i hope you will some time get to reacting to it. It's fantastic
I believe this album was made self-consciously as a bit of an eclectic "introductory" set for the band, with shorter, lighter pieces. For me, it was one of the last Magma albums I heard, and I've never really connected with it, but I suppose it probably is a decent place to start. Most of their "classic" material consists of 30+ minute songs, and they don't necessarily exist in a perfectly definitive version. "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh", their most acclaimed album, is amazing but exists in two competing studio versions which are both flawed - the original release has an infamously terrible mix with the drums pushed way down. "Theusz Hamtaahk", another masterpiece, has never even had a studio recording.
Attahk take a special place in Magma's discography. This LP is their best example of showing song-writing skills in the most conventional and friendly format, yet with all the tweaks and original features. Merci is something else.I do love Attahk very much and still thinking, this LP is probably the best introduction into Magma, if we are speaking about their studio catalog.
Saw them live in 2013, and they absolutely blew my mind! If they are still touring, they are truly a must experience type of act. Go see them before they are done.
I never saw a react to Gong anywhere on prog channel, I don't know why. For my parents they were at the same level on interest of Genesis, Yes and consorts at their time. Maybe because it has more jazz and psychedelic vibes, but Crimson too ! The album You is my favorite Gong is considérés totally French now (based in Paris) cause quickly there was more french guys than English and they were playing mostly in France. They still exists !
@@deanwolfechannel they have a lot of short songs with different atmosfear so not easy to tell: - I never glide before from Angel's Egg sounds a good idea (I saw it on another channel) - My personal choice: Master Builder from the album You. If you're ok for a much more psychedelic experience, and instrumental! I recommend to listen a full album on your own time to immerge in their universe, Angel's Egg is great .
Honestly, this isn't really the best show of what magma is. Kohntarkosz is more representative of the bands sound. There's reccomendations for both theusz hamtaahk and de futura, and while they are both great songs, Theusz Hamtaahk isn't good for a starter, and De Futura is certianly great, but it lacks the spirituality of lots of magma's stuff, and is a bit too far on the dark side.
Absolutely the case. Kohntarkosz is Christian's masterpiece and even he admits that. An amazing composition but also with the most amazing drumming ever- he is never on the beat and it is subtle but he plays behind or ahead in the furious parts of the composition. It is unsettling. ua-cam.com/video/FnJxsUeJXCQ/v-deo.html
Mighty and glorious,
Brutal and gently,
One and only,
Alien band on this Earth...MAGMA!

Damn I hope you do more reactions to Magma.Try "De Futura" or "Zombies".
Or Da Zeuhl Wörtz Mekanik!
or "maahnt"
What a masterpiece song!!! Love "Attahk"! Very underrated Magma album.
Wow magma !
It's Kobaïan, not French.
Christian Vander is one of my favorite drummers.
Japanese girl group cover Magma “ Last seven minutes”
ua-cam.com/video/LBI1EL6G5vY/v-deo.html
He is one of the best drummers on the planet for sure!
Magma, the final boss in prog rock!

18" (x 14“) Gretsch Stop Sign badge bass drum, not a 16"one. Most often at this period in Black Nitron finish.
They ain't speaking French. They are French but Magma is science fiction music, sung in an alien language. Man i love this band.
It's Kobaïan
Science fiction ? No.

YEESSS THIS IS MY FAVORITE MAGMA ALBUM
Well i love all the albuns by Magma but i have a special workmate on this album

DEAN!!! MAgma is agreat outfit to find and react to! Please listen to UDU WUDU!!
Magma is like the Bach among modern music. I saw them once, already 40 yrs. ago ...

Zeuhl : memory of the forces of the universe.

Maybe react to Nebehr Gudahtt. Some of the most insane vocals ever
Love the music. Not crazy about the made up language. Puts me in mind of the famous song by the Dutch group Focus with the song Hocus Pocus.
The singer is Christian Vander himself on this track (and on quasi the whole album). By the way, it is not french, but Kobaïen !
An acquired taste - but this was pretty cool!

Lirik Necronomicus Kahnt and Dondai are worth the admission alone.
If you didn't know, they're about to release a new album this year, after 50 years
Wow, that's great!
@@deanwolfechannel They're also making new mastering & réeditions of old albums. Just got the new kohntarkosz, and it's beautiful !

This is not French. This is Kobaya language
I am not a Magma expert, but I don't think he is speaking French. I believe they have invented their own language.
Kobaïan ‼︎
Welcome to the zeuhl... Ecoutes la grosse caisse!
Gong met in France but they weren't French. Have you reacted to Gong yet?
not yet.
