Her confidence in herself was well placed! She makes competition look like entertainment, never seeming to be nervous or just biding her time between tricks. I still love to watch her beautiful skating form, even when the choreography is so boring...
Don't get me wrong I LOVE Liz Manley she was so adorable and just a little sprite! But Katarina Witt totally deserved the 1988 OGM in my opinion.. her LP at the 88 Olympics was one of the most beautiful and artistic programs of all time!
@ViVi80 this was the 1980's. triple lutzes were practically non-existent for ladies, and being able to pull off a triple loop near the end of the decade was seen as one of the highest achievements of figure skating.
Between her and rosalyn sumners, she did do one more triple and one more double axel ... the judges weren't going to let tiffany chin or elaine zayak win the long program :(
I agree Witt deserved the gold at this competition over Sumners. NOt sure what the rules were at the time but if artistically they gave it to Sumners but atheltically or technically it went to Witt, Sumners could arguably have won gold - think 2002 and B and S over S and P. I do think Witt was very lucky though to win two golds - she is good but not great - just at the right place at the right time. Liz Manley deserved the gold over her in 1988.
No. Back in the 80's SKATING was a 3-part sport. FIGURES, SHORT & LONG PROGRAMS. Katarina, cumulatively, did Better than LIZ...it added up to KATARINA'S Victory.
НЕПРЕВЗОЙДЕННАЯ❗❗IMPECCABLE❗❗ and her gerlish hairdos always make me envy😇😍💗💞🌸🌺💐

Ms Witt is KATARINA not KATERINA
This was 1984 and the Zayak rule was in effect which also reduced the number of triples the girls would do.

State sponsored drug cheat and willingly so.
