These bikes are very maintenance heavy despite the simplicity. I had a mystery rattle. Did all the cam stuff, checked valve clearance, cleaned out the oil spinner and screen... still rattled. Replaced the entire clutch assembly and it stopped. Turns out the gear on the inside wears and causes a chattering. Sounded different to your rattle, but it was infuriating. Don't forget to use the oil bleed screw under the cam chain tensioner to make sure its getting pressure.
You are very lucky you didnt destroy your piston, rings etc. I had exactly the same failure of my oil pump drive sprocket. It means the cam chain is unable to turn the oil pump fast enough so you get insufficient oil pumped, engine wear, overheating and failure. My top end cooked and failed when my sprocket failed just like this.
