- Rory McIlroy looked on course to claim his first professional win on home soil when he led by two shots with four holes to play at a venue just an hour from where he grew up.
However, while Højgaard completed a superb closing 65 with four birdies in the last five holes, McIlroy crucially bogeyed the 17th and then agonisingly missed an eagle putt on the 18th which would have forced a play-off.

The DP World Tour heads to Ireland this week as Royal County Down hosts the Irish Open for the first time in almost a decade. Four-time major winner and world no. 3 Rory McIlroy is in the field for his home event. He’s claimed two individual victories this year with wins at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour in January and the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA TOUR in May. The Northern Irishman has won this event before after claiming victory at the K Club in 2016. Robert MacIntyre will also be in Ireland this week. The world no. 16 has risen 44 places from 60th at the start of the season. He’s claimed two victories this year with both being on the PGA TOUR - at the RBC Canadian Open and on home soil at the Genesis Scottish Open in July. Both those wins, coupled with three other top tens, helped him reach the season-ending TOUR Championship at East Lake, finishing tied 16th. Shane Lowry will fancy his chances at his home tournament this week. He’s claimed seven top-10s this year including a victory at the Zurich Classic playing alongside Rory McIlroy. Others to look out for are Nicolai Højgaard, Erik Van Rooyen, Ryan Fox and Luke Donald.

Many parallels with Greg Norman here, except the shark won so many events outside the majors. Be interested to see the career number comparisons. Both possess the best swing for their ages.
That was some drive down the 18th though. Straight as a nut.
His second shot onto the green was even better. 190 in the wind to land it 10ft from the hole. Amazing to watch it up close.
@@ianrodgers7169 It was a lovely shot. But all this talk about his putting letting him down. Now imagine if his putting was as quality as his ball striking. It wouldn’t be worth watching, he’d win practically everything. Everyone would be wanting him to lose here & there 😂

A few missed putts earlier in the week proved to be so costly in the end.
Probably a dozen players said the same thing.
Rory's caddie has to be certified in CPR. He chokes so often its a necessity.
So sick of seeing Rory come so close all the time. He’s a bloody champion golfer, I want to see him DOMINATE from here on and get to 10+ majors. He’s good enough, just has to sort out the damned putting. What was that on 17?? 😒
It ain't gonna happen...I'm a Rory fan but he just doesn't have the Tiger / Djokovic etc mentality...it's a pretty rare thing for that level of talent to be matched the same mental ability, hence I can only think of a few in my life across all the sports I watch. I still enjoy watching him but I know he won't win stuff, he'll either throw in one bad round so he's not in contention or he'll somehow not quite make it over the line

@@robertcourt8593 I seen it live all 4 days in person, he played a great tournament controlled his rounds brilliantly, Højgaard looked great all week too and got away with some crazy good luck several times across all 4 rounds. Højgaard won this event, Rory didn't choke anything he made a bogey on 2 of the hardest holes on the course and until your stood on that 17th green you don't understand how severe that slope is and very difficult pin location, Højgaard got lucky and held out from the bunker and sometimes thats the difference between a win and not is the luck. This whole "Rory choked" narrative is wild and the only reason it exists is because he's so good he's in winning positions more than anyone else, people seem to forget this is golf they're playing, this game is hard 🤣 dont see anyone taking about Manassero choking but yet he was in prime spot to win all week? or Van Rooyen looking good all week but bottled the end of his 3rd round and his 4th? Rory played great golf, probably played the course better than anyone else, played it smart, and he got beat by a player who played more wayward and had a few great moments sprinkled in that saved him.

That putter cost him at least 2 shots per round. It's clear he cannot read putts and his pace is not consistent.
I enjoy rooting against Rory, but I just don’t get it. He cruised all tournament. He was in a completely different league. He was hitting putts dead weight, burning edges, hitting fairways, flighting wedges… and still doesn’t win. What was that moment of madness on 17? It’s so strange.

Rory couldn’t have expected Hojgaards resurgence with a-bit of luck thrown in but Rory needs an event where he’s the one chasing.

For natural ability, there is no better golfer on the planet. He would have had a Niklaus/Woods career record if he possessed the same coolness under pressure, that you see in Rahm in beast mode, Åberg when smiling or DJ in Sunday contention. Crying shame, but he is still one hell of a golfer!

For someone who seems like he gives a lot of thought to his shots, sometimes he just doesn't play smart golf. There's no excuse for a player at his level to hit that putt from 25' on 17 nine feet past the hole. No other top 5 player would do that. I'll say I doubt a top 25 player would do that. A smart player knows you don't have to absolutely hole that there with 18 a likely birdie hole for him.
He never holes his fair share in pressure rounds, time for a radical rethink as far as putting stroke and equipment is concerned or no more big titles.

Two issues with Rory: 1) he's taking way too much time over the ball, almost freezing these days, and none of the greats did that; 2) he like Greg Norman, have some sort of choke complex at times. You never saw those negative body or face movements from Nicklaus or Tiger.
