- A buoy is being constructed out of wood, and will be used to signal passing boats to boundaries for safety or logical purposes. The primary body of the buoy is made out of a saltwater-resistant wood (maple, SG=0.6), and is a 2 in diameter cylinder 12 ft in length. The buoy will be used in seawater (SG=1.025), and needs to float such that the top of the buoy protrudes 18 in from the water’s surface. To accomplish this, an amount of steel will be added to the bottom of the buoy body.
How many pounds of steel (SG=7.85) should be added?
