  • "I like this film's gritty, Life magazine documentary feel. The archival copy was pretty washed out. I digitally restored it. Zeno, Zeno's Warbird Video Drive-In zenoswarbirdvid... Don't miss our "P-47 thunderbolts" DVD: bit.ly/JAdNFW
The 56th FG (made up of the 61, 62 & 63 squadrons) was one of the most storied Air Corps units of World War II. Home to aces like David Schilling, Frances "Gabby" Gabreski, Robert S. Johnson, Fred Christensen , Walker Mahurin, and CO Hubert "Hub" Zemke , the 56th blazed an early trail across the skies of the ETO in their massive but P-47 Thunderbolts.

The first officer, on the phone, taking the order from combat command, is my father, Joseph F. Hunker, career Air Force, very close friend of Hub Zemke, the 56th Fighter Group's leader. They graduated from flying school together in 1937. I had never seen this film before.

My grandfather was a crew chief for the 61st fighter squadron including Gabby Gabreski, but he didn't like to talk about it much... After the war he worked for Sikorsky, helping design many of their helicopters and developing the maintenence schedules and protocols for them, including the Black Hawk.

Most annoying commentator voice - ever. Was he trying to sound like FDR?

There were a couple of scenes that were damaged. One at 21 minutes more or less. Another around 25. All in all very good.

My USAAF father felt the P-38 was the most beautiful airplane in the sky. I think they even wrote poems about them

Truly amazing, what unique times, in innovation, mass scale of war, and bravery. It’s also exceptional to now be able to experience this through immersive VR campaigns, and witness the formations in full scale, partaking in the simulated battle. Enjoying Reflected’s Campaign the Zeke’s Wolfpack currently. We do need that P-38!! legendary torque power, and always a safe way to get home with the second engine..
