২০০২ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারিতে রাম জন্মভূমি আন্দোলনকে কেন্দ্র করে, অযোধ্যায় এক যজ্ঞানুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেছিল বিশ্ব হিন্দু পরিষদ। ঐ অনুষ্ঠানে যোগদান করার জন্য দেশের বিভিন্ন প্রান্ত থেকে রাম ভক্তরা অযোধ্যায় গিয়ে পৌছায়। যজ্ঞ শেষ হতে কর সেবকরা ট্রেনে চেপে যেযার রাজ্যে ফিরে আসতে শুরু করে। সেরকমই গুজরাটের লোকেরা সবর*মতী এক্সপ্রেসে চেপে তাদের রাজ্যে ফিরছিল। ২৭ শে ফেব্রুয়ারি সকালে সবর*মতী এক্সপ্রেস গোধরা স্টেশনে এসে দাঁড়ায়। একটু পড়েই এমন কিছু ঘটে যার যার ফলে সারা গুজরাট জুড়ে এক ভয়াবহ পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি হয়। সে সময় গুজরাটের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী ছিলেন নরেন্দ্র মোদী।
In February 2002, Vishva Hindu Parishad organized a yajna in Ayodhya, focusing on the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Ram devotees from different parts of the country reach Ayodhya to attend the event. At the end of the yajna, the Kar sevaks pressed into the train and began to return to their own states. Just like that, the people of Gujarat were pressing the Sabar* mati Express back to their state. On the morning of 27th February, the Sabar* mati Express arrived at Godhra station. After some times something happens, which leads to a terrible situation all over Gujarat. Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time
