If a person knew a slight idea about this then they would understand this perfectly and would love this as this very short and accurate . but to a normal person who just searched the topic directly would not get it. Is it true that canal rays are made up of protons when you know these protons are part of nucleus, bind by strong nuclear force and you can't separate them so easily? however if you call it a composition of ions then there is no problem! As this experiment was conducted with hydrogen gas so hydrogen atom without electron is nothing but a proton, so you can say canal rays are composition of these protons 😅
