Great conversation. It's amazing how luxury brands (porsche, rolex, etc) dictate who can purchase and how soon you can receive their products based on your "relationship" with the dealer. This is mind-blowing. As a customer, I am spending thousands/hundreds of thousands of dollars on their products, and yet I still have to beg them to take my money and still potentially not receive the product. This economy has taught me to appreciate my money and spend where I am catered to the best.

While in the Army in 94-95 timeline, I was travelling in a Humvee just outside of Stuttgart on the Autobahn. I glanced in my mirror and I see 1 flat black 986 and a 996 prototypes with wiring hooked all over the cars. When looking at the Boxster for the first time I thought, "What the hell type of Porsche is that?" A few kilometers up the road at a rest stop the test drivers were out having a smoke. Because I speak German I rolled up and jokingly said, "Willst du gegen meinen humvee tauschen?" (Would you like to trade for my Humvee?) Leaning against the cars and cigarette smoke coming out their mouths they paused and said, "Uhhhh Nein Danke." We laughed and I was fortunate to get the sneak peak at least 2 years prior on the 986 debut. And years later I love the Boxster so much I'm a proud owner of one.

I agree to stay away from those third party warranty’s. I had a bumper to bumper on my C63 AMG and still had to pay for repairs due to the fact they didn’t want to use certified Mercedes parts because it was “too expensive.” I recently purchased a CPO 911 and feel so much better about the warranty and have had zero issues.

Thanks guys. Bottom line as Mike said… do your homework before you you buy. Translation… or you will probably pay way too money 😉. With limited supplies, now is not the time to buy a new car, unless you’re willing to pay a premium price for the car you want. On the other hand, if you have money, negotiate hard and get what you want and pay the piper. I’m staying with the one I own and love.

The only "Don't" that I take issue with is the configuration concept - when I sold Porsches, I always encouraged my clients to get what THEY wanted, and don't concern themselves with resale value on specific options - assume that everything added to the car will mean little or nothing to the next buyer.
Don't configure for resale - configure for enjoyment. Obviously, some folks only buy these cars to speculate, but in the 'before times' these cars didn't go up in value, they mostly went down, and what YOU found important (full leather, sport chrono, contrast stitching, etc) may mean absolutely nothing to the next person in line.
Some options on some cars are important - ventilated seats in a southern car, for example - but others - crests on headrests, for example - always return pennies on the dollar.

This is one of the worst times to purchase a Porsche. Limited production and supply plus all the economic, supply chain, and pandemic factors have multiplied to make it a really terrible time. And there's no relief trying to buy used, ESPECIALLY vintage! Yikes! Unless you have lots of money to burn, best to wait a while before taking the plunge.

That said, I have to disagree with Mike's assertion that the Porsche Dealer sells you PPF through a 3d party at "wholesale" prices. In my case, I knew who the dealer used. The dealer was quoting me more than $500 over the retail list price offered by their installer when purchasing directly. Needless to say, I did not buy through the dealer. I'd argue that any price increases should be enjoyed by Porsche - they're the creator, producer, originator and IP owner of the whole thing. If anyone deserves it, it's them. That said, they could reward their dealers accordingly with proper incentive. But the dealers adding $100k ADMs for doing very little? Undeserved. Let the company reap the rewards.

It’s a speculator controlled business now - like buying a Rolex. So, I’m done with Porsche. I’ll either upgrade my 991.2 4S or buy a MB AMG GT. I just looked at a Porsche dealer in Atlanta - they had 50 Taycans and ZERO 911s. Not one 911 in inventory. Porsche leadership is fully woke and hates ICE cars and their owners. I live in Austin Texas - 15 Taycans and ZERO 911s. I give up….Porsche is dead to me after 40 years of loyalty.

    Where’s the trigger warning??
I bought a 2017 911 CPO car in March from a So Cal Porsche dealer. They took every opportunity to remind me that my car was not expensive enough for them to provide great service. Each inquiry was first answered with a “NO” and after that I pulled teeth and wrote an honest Yelp review of the middling experience. They had to replace the clear bra under CPO which was bubbling. When I mentioned that other friends with say a Ferrari or other high end car didn’t seem to have such a problem, the sales guy said “Well, your car isn’t a Ferrari.” It was clear the dealers approach was to treat you like a number. Maybe if I’d spent 2X the money I might have had their attention. Probably not.
The dealer didn’t return my calls for 3 days after making an offer for 95% asking price.
They raised the price from the initial website price (I paid $500 less than initial price after calling them out on their poor initial response).
When I was ready to get the car I called ahead and said “I’m on my way to pick up the car. I’ll finance with my bank. They said “We don’t take your banks financing.” It took the bank calling them to straighten that out. But it was like “we don’t take your money.”
    The clear bra issue…
    Etc.
If not for the metallic blue grey exterior with cream color seats and stitched blue leather dash with aluminum trim I would have moved on. The car sold me, not the dealer.

I would have told them to pound sand after that statement - we don’t take your banks financing? WTF does that even mean? We don’t accept money? What a joke. No wonder the traditional dealer model is close to extinction. No one wants to deal with these jerks. It’s not the salespersons fault - it’s ownership and it just trickles down to the people dealing with the public.

porsche, enjoy it in the first 30,000 miles, after that maxie bucks in repairs, like an land rover purchase two--one to drive while the other is in the shop.

We'd have to disagree. Many of us drive our Porsches well over 100K without issue.
