    Great video!
    I just got my Retirement motorcycle, a 2019 Yamaha Super Tenere ES. Just ordered the SW-Motech trax-adv panniers in black for the bike. I already had a GIVI 52L top case. Really looking forward to getting the bags. Keep up the great videos

    Awesome review and thanks for the same. I wish you had covered how the boxes looked inside, if they come with any liners along with top box. For the top I am looking at T-Ray 50L as it supports 2 helmets. BTW, the sound level went down in some section of the footage.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому +1

      +Prabu Venkatraman Thanks! I did have a bit of an issue with the sound on this video. I think my mic batteries were low. I bumped it up, but may have missed a section...sorry. I will do another video in the spring when I do a test pack and cover the insides. The boxes do not come with liners, but they are available as an add-on. I have a number of dry sacks, so I will most likely use those, There are also organizers available for the lids, which I will most likely end up purchasing. Thanks again!

    Looks like a great choice! I had a set similar on my previous bike and loved how roomy they were. I went with the factory hard bags on the Tenere and like them but they're no where near as roomy as the ones you have. One things for certain though, throwing a leg over the saddle with those bags on is going to take some effort! lol Even with the factory bags, I have to really do some acrobatics to get on and off that tall beast of a bike! Enjoyed the show Craig!

      +Greg got away Yeah, being "average height" and "middle aged" I have to use more technique than flexibility to climb on and off the Tenere. Thanks for watching!

    Continued. Forks. They are expensive, but BRIGHT and adjustable. Made in CA.
    Lastly, Tires. I have used Heidenau tires on my GSand GSA AND LOVE the mileage - 20,000 km. Good grip, on and off road. Don't go to AK without good off road tires. Other good choice is Michelin knobbies, but I have forgotten the name. Go to the Artic circle when you go there. I went there in the Yukon.
    Lastly, re luggage. I have Jesse luggage 45 and 40 L, and can get tent, sleeping bag and chair, along with clothes, PC and tools. I don't like anything on rear. Hence the tank bag helps.. Cheers

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому

      I was looking at the Heidenau tires, but ended going with the Mitas E07. Mainly because they do not have as much of a pronounced center ridge and I thought they would be better in the dirt. So far they are really great and do well on the tarmac as well. I have head really good things about the Heidenaus as well. I am probably carrying too much, but I cannot get all of my camping gear into the panniers, thus I have a set of top bags. Appreciate the suggestions!

    For another dry bag option, if in Canada (not sure if MEC is stateside) don't overlook the MEC Scully Duffle...nice and stackable, and built for extreme wet and abuse. Similar price I think, once you convert the dollar.

    I bought the biggest Givi Outback luggage boxes top and side. And soft luggage. My wife likes to camp with me and barbecue so she can fill up her side of the bike with stuff quick. I have had no problem with the weight on road. I put the soft luggage on top of aluminum side cases. When off road I leave side aluminum cases at home

    Have you noticed any negative effects of having two different size panniers in terms of weight and balance? I am considering getting the Givi Outback Trekker hard luggage cases for my Triumph Tiger XC and I am faced with this very issue. The distance from centerline is an inch and half (plus OR minus) whether you go for the same size or two different sizes on both sides. I presume I can always put lighter gear in the larger case and heavier gear in the smaller case.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  7 років тому +1

      +Vic Wiseman, I have not had any issues. They extend roughly the same distance from the bike, due to the exhaust on the left. There is only a .5 pound difference between the two bags, at least that is what I got when I put them on the scale. My buddy Peter has a Tiger with the same bags as I do (his large bag is on the left). His bags are a little wider than mine at 42 inches. Mine are 40 I believe. If you have questions, give Twisted Throttle a call, they are usually very helpful. Hope this helps.

      Thanks, appreciate the kind words. I know that there are several adapters available for GIVI, Shad and a couple others. But I don't think they make any for the Touratech bags or the Global Scout. I know Touratech uses a completely different mounting system. Sorry I can be of more help.

    Great videos Craig, I just finish to put the SW-Motech rack in my Tenere and now I'm waiting for my silver Left and right side TRAX ADVENTURE Sidecase, Craig my order was for 45 liters left and right, Why are you recommended 37 liters for left side and 45 liters for right side ? Please let me know . Thanks again Craig, that's a really useful all your videos.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab

      The 37 liter goes on the muffler side so the the bike is the same width on both sides. With the 45, it will be a little wider on the left. If you dont mind that, it is no big deal.

    thanks for the update! nice system, how do you fasten the soft packs to the bike RokStraps? I like those bags, might work for a less equipped bike than the super ten.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому

      The bags come with a built in strap system. Take a look at my video on the D38. It should be under reviews. The smaller D38 bags also come with straps that can be used to secure them to the hard cases. However I will probably purchase a backup set of some kind.

    Did you look at Touratech at all? I know that they cost a lot more but I think they have various features like turning the top of the case into a table, which might be nice at a campsite.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому +2

      +William xxx I did look at Touratec, they were my second choice. The pricing is roughly the same and SW-Motec does have the table and other accessories available as well. What sold me on the SW-Motec racks was two things, one I was able to see the bags and racks in person at Twisted Throttle's factory store and I really liked the quick-release rack system. I did not see that available for the Touratec. I saw quick-release for the bags but the racks were hard bolted to the frame and I did not find an alternative. Maybe there is one and I just did not see it.

    Now that you have gone on your Alaska trip. How was the luggage? Also, an probably the bigger question I have, how well has the quick release system worked? I had the GIVI Outback with their quick release system and when it fell over the cases were always loose from that point on. Would you mind giving my your experience with this system. I am about to buy a 2017 Tenere and will need bags for traveling. Thanks.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому +1

      So far, I have had no issues with the SW Motech cases or the racks. The quick release system works very well, they are easy to get on and off. I did this many times while on the Alaska trip, taking the bags into hotel rooms (it is easier than pulling out individual items). I have not dropped my bike, so I cannot comment personally, however Peter has dropped his bike several times, and the bags did go some minor damage. The racks were fine and as far as I know, they still go on and off fine. The bags did get a bit bent, not in the outer corners--that hit--but in the inside corner. I guess they pushed up against the racks and got dented. He bang them back out and they are fine as far as I know. I would have no hesitation buying the same bags and racks again. Hope this helps.

      I definitely would if I could weld. I may rivet something together, there is a nice metal shop in town I know of. If it comes to it tho I might just buy a couple of military ammo cases but I'm not a fan of that option. Right now I'm researching clever engineering in storebought panniers and hopefully integrate some features. Elspeth Beard kinda inspired me.

    love your videos...I think the Tenere is my next bike as well. Any concerns for the strength of the 1/4 turn fasteners for the rack? my Road King has 1/4 turns for the bags, but some folks are leary of them, but that's for Harleys. Thoughts?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому +1

      +lkazanov I guess the honest answer is, I don't know... So far just riding and going over bumps etc... they are fine and remain tight and secure. I do have my concerns about how they might hold up in a drop, but I guess I will not know that until it happens...and it will. My plan is to get a set of bolts to replace the 1/4 turn fasteners if the need arises. I hope that it does not, but want to be prepared.

    Manual says you can load 10 kg per pannier. Does this include the pannier weight or not?
    Because the pannier weights 5 kg per se, that would give you only 5 kg more to load? Or can no load 10 kg inside the pannier? Thank you.

    Hi Craig: I am SO loving your segments on the Super Tenere'! I'm about to buy my second one. (I traded my first on a new Harley Heritage.....). I am DYING to see you do a segment on your first trip. You'll be doing a segment on SEATS...and that will be very interesting! I am leaning toward Touratech's ZEGA PRO panniers. I just like the way that they're built and look. One thing that I like about yours, however, is how fast you can remove the racks themselves. I had never seen that before. Pretty neat. You may remember me commenting on this before, but you coming off a Vision....with, without a doubt THE best stock seat there is.....and parking your butt on an adventure bike seat......IS going to VERY, VERY interesting! RUSSELL "all day" seats are what you are used to, but you have to send them a seat pan for them to build it on. (PITA!) Rick Mayer did the same, and made amazing seats. So that leaves Corbin or the interesting new line from SADDLEMEN seats with the GEL and the space down the middle to create more "flex" . I can't wait.....for YOU to search out the seats! Good Luck! (Oh...and did I mention that it's 82 degrees in the Everglades today? Not sure it I did!)

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому

      +Ray Jensen Well thanks for the weather update...it is 35 here and we are expecting flurries tonight...LOL. Yes, I remember you mentioning the seat. We'll see, I have been about 170 miles on it so far, and while no where near as good as the Vision, I was ok. I would imaging that you are correct, at some point I will be changing it. I did look at the Touratec seats and while expensive, I like the idea of it being breathable. Seats are tough, because they are so expensive and you want to try them first...well see. The Touratec bags are nice, but I really liked the quick-release racks and the fact that I could put my hands on them before buying. Both are good choices.

      @LivingOffTheSlab  5 років тому +1

      I did not get to personally see all of them, but did look at a number on line. I ended going with the SW Motech because I liked the quick release brackets and the solid aluminum construction of the bags. They are also listed as 100% waterproof and so far that has been true. The Givi Outback is water resistant. Will it work in most cases, sure, but I wanted the more robust bag, just in case. At least at the time I was buying the SW Motech ADV bags had more accessory options as well. Hope this helps.

      There are a lot of good bag choices out there. My suggestion is to make sure you know what you are buying. Some are welded like the Trax Adventure bags, and others riveted. Riveted is typically cheaper and will work in most situations, however they generally are not 100% waterproof (you may need a waterproof liner). Just make sure the bag is going to work for your riding style. For me, given that I was only going to buy them once, I opted for the welded bags.

    Is it possible to install an aftermarket exhaust and get the big case for both sides?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому

      Any aftermarket exhaust is going to mount to the stock brackets, so I doubt it would get you any more space on that side. On top of that, the side racks are made to accommodate the stock exhaust. To get to 45s on and have them evenly displaced on both sides you would need to have a custom setup. On the other hand, you could get two 45s and just put them on. They would be wider on the left, but if don't care, it would work.

      Brad, I'm just curious. What's wrong with the Yamaha bags? It seems like a lot of ADV riders go with after market panniers. What makes these boxes so much better?

    Are those making rattles after a couple thousands miles ?

      No...12,000 miles to Alaska and back and they work just fine.

    Great job on the review. I have the same boxes you have on my 650 vstrom. I thought a soft top instead of the hard box might work out well for me. Twisted Throttle is fun to work with. Keep it up.

      The Twisted Throttle folks are great, always very helpful. They are riders themselves. Ride Safe!

    Got the givi outback boxes for my bike and I thought the 1100 was expensive. Been wanting the snow to go too.
