It's true it better competitor stay alive because great gladiator weren't easy to find and kinda expensive to promote, so losing one definitely was not good thing in terms of money. Some were favorites so you definitely want them around to bring in crowds.

That scene engraved so deep in my child brain, I never even considered watching single episode of Simpsons.
