Test World XI selection vote (ending August 2016)

- Опубліковано 28 сер 2016
- The panel selects a World XI during lunch of Day 3 of the second Test between South Africa and New Zealand in August 2016. This team was selected before Virat Kohli's amazing exploits against England recently. The whole idea of this discussion is to get some debate going as any cricket lover believes they can choose a better team. As such, have a go.

would have agreed 3 months back with that batting lineup...but now Kohli deserves to be in it
In my opinion Kohli is the best in the world
Agreed. I've just had the misfortune of him not only making a fool of Alastair Cook as a captain (who quit today by the way) but making England's bowling attack look like a bunch of schoolboys for an entire series. He is the certainly the best batsman of this era. He is also, in my opinion (and I've followed cricket for over 40 years - played it at a pretty good level too), one of the very best of all time. He really is that good. I think he could be better than Sachin. We shall see!
ludocrat he has done great so far and the good thing about him is he aspires to do even better every time he steps on the field
Having said that, i feel his only weakness remains the English conditions which i hope (infact believe) he will overcome the next time he tours England...
Also Love watching the Fab 4 bat and then there is always the never-ending debate "who is the best of them all ?"
I believe he will too. Success builds confidence and he has nothing to fear from any bowling attack in the world - even in English conditions (which are not that hard if you play a little later and know where your off stump is). I think he will thrive. All I can say is that I love cricket beyond my obvious support for my country. And I love watching great cricketers most of all. Kohli is undoubtedly a great cricketer. All I want know now is how great he can be :)
I would pay money to watch him in the Test arena above all else. And I look forward to doing just that in the return series! India's amazing record of producing the finest batsmen in the world goes on...
ludocrat always great to interact with a "purist cricket fan"
I too wish someday to be at the Lords to watch some amazing cricket irrespective of the teams playing :)

Got a fiver on my team
Sean Wilson make cook the captain and I completely agree with your lineup
Broad in place of clouderson
Sean Wilson Kohli as captain he's not exactly level headed....
Aaron Templeman I want my captain to be charismatic and do anything for the team. Kohli offers that.
Sean Wilson He also is brash, arrogant and also suspectible to getting into unnessary conflict. Which is fine if your just a middle order batman, adds a bit of spice to the game. But when you have to analyse a situation that kind of temprement gets in the way.
I'd be very happy with this team. I think this is probably the best team you could put out at the moment.

Poor tail but expect top 6 to be firing plus Jimmy once scored 81 so he's the Burnley Lara
But Current's any best 11 can't win against the past legends team. They are undoubtely the best cricketers of all time.

This video hasn't aged well exactly. They were struggling to pigeon hole Smith (who even at that time was the Number 1 in the world; just goes to show their bias) into the team. At this point in time, Smith would be the first name on the teamsheet and would be nailed on for the number 3 spot. He's in Bradman like form.

12th man - K Rabada.
Sub - Amla
Top 5 no amla? are you kidding? i would kick out ab or Kohli or root for amla
Emad Ashraf If you see the current form, amla looks a bit shaky. He struggled badly in Australia and in the previous series.
I know Root has opened but I wouldn't have him at #2. He was terrible in the series against Aus he opened in.
I'd kick out warner and replace him with Cook. Warner is only good down under. Struggles badly in Asia
For what it's worth, my bowling lineup is quite different, but my XI is Cook, Warner, Kohli, Root, Smith, Stokes, Bairstow, Ashwin, Broad, Shah, Anderson.
Why is Ben Stokes an automatic choice?
HanBoom even amit mishra has better record in WI. I guess ashwin and starc good enough for 6&7 positions and include quintin de cock in that list as genuine keeper
Hes the best all rounder in the world

There is a lot of depth in the batting order with Stokes and Ashwin coming in at NO. 8 and 9 respectively and I think the biggest strength of this team is batting but the bowling as well is world class with the likes of Anderson and Steyn and don't forget about Ashwin coz even he is a class act but bowling is a bit of a concern with only four bowlers but the kind of batting order I have you don't want to bowl to it as a bowler and I think that the strength in batting will make up rather nicely for four bowlers.
Agree with you about the balanace. I would do a similar, but slightly different thing. Although, I may be able to be convinced otherwise.

Sagar Bhalla Kohli is apparently an absolute piece of work (friend of a friend's brother is a test umpire; he's apparently absolutely foul on the pitch). Fantastic cricketer and in the team but not skipper please! Smith is too good a player to miss out you don't need jadeja
Daniel Allen you have your own point of view./ all i am saying virat is much more aggressive,, if only one could play i will go with virat. Smith has orthodox style but not a pure cricketing style!
Sagar Bhalla did you see smith today making 160ish ? I'd drop Jadeja out of your side for smith. I don't think Kohli has the temperament. There's a difference between aggressive and hot headed. Michael Clarke was an aggressive captain as was McCullum and Ponting and Steve Waugh.
Daniel Allen i think u have been answered with the 235 he scored...

12. Ravindra Jadeja
I choose Ravindra Jadeja as the 12 man because if you're playing in Australia or South Africa you need your pace attack pretty badly, but also if you're playing in subcontinent it's vice Versa. And also I didn't choose any other spinner because Jadeje can chip in with the bat as well as he is an extraordinary fielder.

Bring back for this year also.
Thank God Cook wasn't selected in the end.
I'd open with Amla as he does it in ODI cricket so the move up is easier for him. Smith at 3, Root 4, Williamson 5, DeVilliers 6 (if you're giving him the gloves then let him play his aggressive game later on in the innings), Stokes, Ashwin, Starc, Steyn, Anderson.
Others to be considered: Kohli and Matthews (like for like replacement for Stokes)
greatest test xi for me. bowlers: muralithuran akram Hadley Marshall (spinner leftiepacer skidder leadpacer) . allrounder:sobers. batmen: bradman Headley Tendulkar Lara W. g. grace. keeper:sangakara
Mate you cannot just have 11 great players from 120 plus years of Cricket . You cannot there are just to many In my view you would have at least 3 players for each position you would have to include so many, Compton Hutton are great players from any era Hammond Keith Miller from Australia Pointing Richards Weekes Neil Harvey Trueman Lindwall Imran Khan You see the point that I am making.. ???
Replace sangakkara with gilchrist
Pratibha Singh Quite frankly Pratibha you cannot really just select 11 players from say the last 30 years . Cricket is over 120 years old .. It is just total nonsense to select just 11 players and pretend that these are the greatest .. If selected the best say 4 /5 best teams than you might get some ware.. How just selecting 11 players can one ever leave out say some of the real all time greats like Bradman Hobbs Sutcliffe Compton probably the greatest middle order batsman of any era a genius like Peterson but a more complete batsman A far greater sportsman >> he remember lost like Hutton Hammond Miller Bradman his best 6 years .due to the war,. These players were real greats who played on uncovered wickets light bats longer boundaries against much stronger opposition . There were no weak teams in the 30s 40s 50s even 60s..
No Murali the chucker please
Ian Kemp I understand but that’s what I think atm
Now Virat Kohli is No.1 test batsman in Dec 2019. And should be automatic choice in current test xi if now chosen.

To all those saying "why not Kohli", they are picking based on a match at Lords. Kohli has a terrible record in England.
Interesting Kepler insisting on Cook as an opener. He himself played in a EP team with 3 openers at 1-2-3, Amm, Rushmere and Wessels, with them often changing actual positions.

Shahbaz Waraich So you'd pick kohli who averages 13 over smith who's average is in the 50s in England?
Smith averages 49 not 60 vs England in England and yes i feel looking at the recent form,Virat is ahead comfortably and also is doing a stellar job in captaining India.
Shahbaz Waraich we're not talking about captaining rather averages 13 against 50 form doesn't matter just look at Hobart where the ball was swinging smith was the only one who was comfortable batting in those conditions his 200 in England should be enough to put in front virat. Until virat revist England and actually plays well you can't give him a spot in the test side. And talking about form smith just made 164 and 72 you can check his previous test scores which he was a bit unlucky getting runout or looking for quick runs at the end. In Hobart no was willing to stick with him otherwise no doubt he would made big scores.
Jon snow For me a captain is very important and Smith has been getting beaten for most of the last year.Virat has been milking runs whereas Smith flopped in SL and did a decent job vs RSA.Yes he made 200 odd at Lord's but I feel Virat at this point of time is a better pick for my team.
Shahbaz Waraich Being the highest run scorer and you say flopped ? and why would virat or smith captain the side? look at the ipl as an example kohli had stacked team with the likes of ab,Gayle,Watson ( 1 number ranked all-rounder) and many more but still managed to lose to Davy Warner. When his not captaining winning side and shows resilient than you can applaud his captaincy. common mate he couldn't even win the ipl with stacked team against Warner who Cleary was the better leader. I am not saying Warner should be captain or smith but don't give credit someone who hasn't earnt it. And why can't ab or Kane captain the world xi side why does it have to be between kohli and smith? Purely from batsmen prepective Smith is better 'test' batsmen than kohli.

There is no point of having an all rounder like ben stokes if you have 4 high quality bowlers and 6 high quality batsman as well as a keeper-batsman. Looking at the ashes Australia had no all rounders in the first two matches and won. In the last three matches they had Mitchell marsh whose role was more of a batter than an all rounder and Australia won 2 of those three matches with marsh. Therefore an all rounder like stokes isn’t needed.
Alister cook has been very inconsistent with the bat so Amla should open and Kholi has to go 3.
If your putting Steven Smith at number 6 you might as well not put him in your team. He needs to be up in the order taking control of the bowlers

I don't rate starc and not picking Kohli is madness. Root has opened so i can get Kohli in. If we were playing in Australia I'd have to get Warner in somehow though. It does show the sorry state of west indies cricket that no one even threatens to make this side. If we had injuries to bowlers I'd call on amir, wahab Riaz or broad (especially if we are in England. In one of his hot streaks he's the best bowler in the world (8-15)).
Or rabada
starc is much better than boult mate you must be a kiwi to have williamson as captain as well rest of the team is good but a bit bias boult isn't even close to starc and both de villiers and kohli much better captains than williamson. kane definitely deserves his spot in the team but purely as a batsmen.
Kohli has d best record in test captancy.
That's a bad choice for Kane Williams as Captain
Liam Rabbidge I'm not a kiwi, I just think Boult is a better bowler than Starc. I think he is more accurate and better at exploiting swing when it's on offer. I think starc is more injury prone. I think Boult is a cleverer bowler and I think his action is more repeatable making him more reliable.
I picked Williamson as captain as I didn't think devilliers could be captain if I was making him keep wicket and bat. I want him to be able to focus. Plus I reckon Faf is a better captain and should remain as South African captain when AB comes back from injury. So if he isn't a national captain he won't be my world skipper. Can't pick smith, he's not good enough. Kohli' record is inflated by so much of his captaincy being done at home. Because th BCCI are such bullies and have the most money they always play in India lots of matches against foreign sides who struggle against ashwin. He is also, reportedly, a right arrogant piece of work, a hot head. I wanted a calm captain who knows how to use drs properly, there are some characters in this team so I think the calm influence Williamson would have would be best.
Kohli definitely get's into the Test XI now, just needs to prove himself in England.

I feel any World XI would not perform consistently well in all conditions even though this is all fantasy and open to argument. It would be fair to have a World XI squad and select players suited to different conditions. So here's my squad:
Batsmen:
1 & 2. David Warner, Alastair Cook, Azhar Ali
3. Kane Williamson, Hashim Amla
4. Joe Root, Steve Smith, Virat Kohli
5. AB De Villiers, Ajinkya Rahane
Allrounders:
Ben Stokes, Shakib Al Hasan, Moeen Ali
Keepers:
Quinton De Kock, Sarfraz Ahmed, Jonny Bairstow
Bowlers:
(a) Pace -- Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Stuart Broad,
(b) Spin -- Yasir Shah, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rangana Herath, Ravindra Jadeja
T20I XI 2019

KOHLI?????????????????????????????????????????????????????///
Alastair Cook would have to go for Williamson. Cook has been terribly inconsistent, which his selection being bought into question so many times, and only averages 47. Williamson is now above 50, and over the past three years has been consistently going at about 70. Its a no-brainer. And considering NZ openers, he pretty much does open anyway.
My Team As at September 2018 (currently active, not retired): Warner, Root, Williamson, Smith, Kohli, Stokes, De Kock, Ashwin, Starc, Rabada, Anderson.

You have four possible bowlers. You need atleast 5
Vishisht Rao Smith and Root can turn an arm over. Perhaps you have a point though; I might be better taking one more bowler - probably a seamer.

I don't think that there exists a perfect XI. IMO, my XI would depend on which country we're playing in because my bowling combinations would differ. For example, if we're picking an XI to play in India, I'd pick two proper spinners in traditional 4 bowler attack. However, in Australia I'd only go with one. In fact, depending on the conditions, my choice of wicketkeeper would change too. The XI i've picked below based on the general perception of a traditional Test match team. Hence, I've gone with 3 fast bowlers and 1 spinner. Further, I'm a firm believer in the cliché "batsman win you matches, bowlers win you tournaments" and pick batting allrounders to supplement my bowling attack as well.
My Current Test World XI
Warner
Cook (c)
Amla
Smith (vc)
AB
Angelo Mathews
Quinton de Kock (wk)
Ashwin
Philander
Starc
Anderson
This XI gives me, IMO, a perfect balance between bat and ball. Given the modern day demands of deep batting line ups, i think its equally important to have depth in bowling as well. I repeat that this XI fits what i think is the general perception of a traditional test match XI where conditions suit fast bowlers better and a team only requires one spinner.
My bowling line up is a four pronged attack with Ashwin the single spinner and bowling all-rounder. Philander is another bowling all-rounder a compliments my primary fast bowling attack comprising of Starc and Anderson (In fact, if we're playing outside England i'd probably replace Anderson with Steyn or Boult). Given that spin would not dominate the overs in this team in "traditional test cricket conditions", I think that Steven Smith would compliment Ashwin well. Smith would only bowl a handful of overs at most, but his leg spin can come handy at times. I wouldn't categorise him as a batting all-rounder but i don't think his bowling prowess can be ignored. Angelo Mathews compliments my fast bowling attack very well can take a bit of responsibility of Starc and Anderson/Boult/Steyn's shoulders given the Philander is not as good as them.
My batting line up has four solid, proper batsmen. Cook and Warner are an opening combination that, IMO, have it in them to bat in conditions across the world. Amla and Smith serve as perfect combination of ice and fire. And no one can ignore AB's talent with the bat. Angelo Mathews is a good option at No 6 as a batting all rounder. Quinton de Kock at No 7 is probably not debatable, though some might say that Wriddhiman Saha is better behind the wickets in spinning conditions. Ashwin and Philander give my depth to my batting line-up.
I have picked Cook as my captain given his experience and Steve Smith is his deputy. Some world class players miss out. Kane Williamson and Joe Root could easily replace Amla at No 3 given that they bat in the same position and have batted equally well. I've gone with Amla primarily because of his experience. Time will tell if Root and Williamson can maintain their form over time the way Amla as. Virat Kohli misses out because at No 4 despite his recent form because Smith has been consistent for Australia even when they haven't done well as a team and boasts and average of 60 which no batsman in world cricket currently does. AB at No 5 is a no brainer. I've gone Angelo Mathews at No 6 for his consistency and better numbers than Stokes in Test cricket.
Yasir Shah misses out too. I really can't pick between him and Ashwin at the moment. Despite being an Indian, I still feel that Yasir is a better bowler but Ashwin's current rise in test cricket seems more than just good form. And as I said before, Trent Boult and Dale Steyn could easily replace Anderson in any conditions. I however, have a slight personal bias to great swing bowling and there is no one better than Anderson at that. However, on wickets that do not assist swing bowlers, I'd go with Steyn or Boult any day.
Oh and when it comes to test cricket, I do believe in having a proper wicketkeeper who can go through 90 overs a day without much to complain. AB de Villiers, is a part time 'keeper for me and not one who would enjoy committing to that role on a permanent basis. Besides, I wouldn't mind conserving his energy for his batting.
kohli must be there for passion of winning matches
