- This Adenium was originally imported from China 6 years ago and it is now being transformed into a Bonsai. Jerome, the owner of The Bonsai Supply, begins the training process of a lateral root system and is starting to shape the branches with wire. Mari, his wife, assists him in the process.

Amazing roses congratulations
about the trunk thickness part, most of adeniums cultivars are basally dominant(except for a few cultivar like Ran chi nee and somalem where as the trunk thicken faster than the caudex) , which mean the actual trunk of the tree and branches thicken up very slowly, the part that grow biggest and fastest is the caudex, which mean if you want a thick trunk fast, grow the tree from seed, then , and then 2 - 3 time a year, repot the tree, choose a straight root and "lift" the tree higher(with supported poles so the tree doesn't fall off) keep the root straight and grow it longer until you get your desired high, then start developing the base

When is the best time to wire these plants? When are the branches the most soft / pliable, spring, winter, summer? Best wire to use: copper, aluminum, insulated or uninsulated, wire size, etc.?

maybe this isn't Bonsai protocol but why don't you put a piece of plastic resist or something to block where the Taproot would grow back under the tree that would force the root growth radially? I am very new at bonsai and actually got into it because I'm So Into adeniums.I was fascinated when I found your Channel.Jerome, you amaze me.You are truly a master with all the wisdom and talent yet you're a cool kid.

Once you cut the base, the very rooty bottom, can it also grow back?
As always, GREAT video and excellent information. I have a couple questions; I have a couple adeniums that are approximately 3-6 years old, (I am guessing due to size and thickness). I live in Orlando FL and back in late spring I complete a horizontal root chop and allowed the plant to dry out for 4-6 weeks before re-potting. I wired and defoliated completely. Now several months later everything is doing great. The limbs and trunk are very rigid and the leaves are growing like wild. My question is; when should I remove the wire? Also, do you have any advice as for care during the upcoming winter? How often should I re-pot? Thank you in advance for your feedback. Keep up the great videos.

Hey Geri, I didn't. Letting them dry out before potting/ watering is enough and they won't get any rot.

Hey Matt, my general rule is to leave about 20-30% of the old soil for all species accept Adeniums, Jades and other similar species. I remove the old soil gradually over time
Your videos re so usefull and informative Sir, but it d be better if u use a lapel mic. Cause it sometimes is really hard to hear ur voice especially when there is lots of noise around ur place.

I have like five thick branches in my adenium rose. How do I get more ramification on my tree? When do I start giving her fertalizer?
Very nice! What about when they grow seeds. If I am not going to use them, should I cut them off? Mine has about 4 or 5 seed pods growing on it.
Hey Lyle, If you dont use the seeds always cut them off. A lot of energy goes into producing those seed pods.

Hello! New subscriber! I actually live in Northwest Florida and have a few desert roses that I've been considering as pre-bonsai material. But the idea of that big caudex chop makes me so anxious haha. I'm also concerned about the possibility of root rot as a result of such a large cut. What soil mix do you recommend for a desert rose in a tropical climate like Florida?
Hey, as long as you let them dry out between potting and watering they won't rot, just let the cut completely dry, 1 to 2 weeks will dry the new cut out completely. this is the soil that I use for all of my Bonsai trees.

I just let ants live in my bonsais unless they’re fire ants tbh. I see it like an additional display along with the bonsai
We recommend getting rid of ants immediately. As an example: Ants carry aphids into your tree and help them set up shop.
Quick question: Does the Desert Rose regrow from the portion of the caudex that you removed? I'm always looking for ways to reduce waste and create new material. Cheers, Dick from Vancouver.
