A post on X last Friday about the Albanese Government’s latest attempt to ram through its draconian MAD (Misinformation and Disinformation) laws got this channel a HUGE response. And a significant proportion of the comments were more critical of the Opposition for not doing the job of opposing, than of the government for bringing the stupid laws to parliament in the first place.

The bill's broad definitions of "misinformation" and "disinformation" could easily be weaponised against legitimate political discourse, investigative journalism, or any speech that challenges the status quo. As a veteran, I've seen firsthand the price of freedom. I've stood alongside brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that future generations of Australians could live in a free and open society. This legislation dishonors their memory and undermines the very principles we fought to protect.
The idea that a government body could have the power to determine what information is "true" or "false," and to compel private companies to censor on their behalf, is a dangerous step towards authoritarianism. It's a slippery slope that could lead to the erosion of the democratic freedoms we hold dear.
We must remember that our democracy is robust because of our ability to freely exchange ideas, to debate vigorously, and yes, even to be exposed to information that some might deem "misinformation." It's through this open marketplace of ideas that truth ultimately prevails.

Our way of life - our very identity as a free people - is at stake. As a veteran, as an Australian, and as a believer in democracy, I cannot stand idly by while these freedoms are eroded.
