Interesting video of what Berlin was like in 1983. I remember those times very well. ( Bear in mind that you were showing mostly underground trains despite riding outside.)

I was fortunate (and honored) to serve as a Senior NCO in the US Army, stationed in the occupied city of West Berlin from 1981 to 1984. The Cold War was at its peak then, mostly as a clear confrontation between NATO (commercial west) and the Warsaw Pact (communist east).
There was a US facility in the Zehlendorf area, a couple blocks over from Ubahn line 2. I think not far from the stop at Onkel Toms Hutte or Oskar Helene Heim. My memory on the location is a bit foggy these days.
The facility consisted of a couple official US government buildings, primarily an admin facility and a low level operations building with rooms similar to a motel. There was also a large old warehouse offset from the operations buildings used for storage of various materials and equipment. All of the buildings were in very poor shape from decades of use and the US Army wanted to level everything and build a new facility.
The West Berlin government worked with the US Army Engineers to develop a plan for the area. There was a huge shock when they dug out the old blueprints to show everyone their projected plan. The old warehouse turned out to have been the private home of one of the Speer family; might have been Krupp, but I think Speer.
West Berlin government declared it to be a ‘gdenkmal’ and untouchable for destruction. West Berlin then spent almost 1 million dmarks to totally rebuild it to the original condition. The West Berlin government had a bit of a problem though as the building was technically still on property of the US government, Germans could not use it.
They needed an official representative of the US government, yours truly, to make the sacrifice of living in that mansion for my last year in the city. War can really be heck sometimes!

Helmstedt was were one would get on the train in West Germany to cross the border into East Germany. Then proceed to the island of west Berlin in the middle of Communist east Germany. I use island as a metaphor. One got veterans of foreign war status if you were stationed in W Berlin since it was on the front lines. I took this train in 1977 while in the us Army. Trip was at night and we were warned, " no pictures or everyone's camera will be confiscated". While in Berlin I crossed checkpoint charlie into East Berlin on a limited tour of museums and war memorials. We had to wear our dress greens.
