  • In this video, I unbox a Nvidia Quadro P2000 GPU and talk about why this is of interest to PLEX or Emby users. I then show you how you can install a GPU in the R710 server by using a special PCIe riser board (Dell P/N: GP347).
    UPDATE: Many of you have contacted me about the x16 PCIe riser for the R710 server based on this video. Unfortunately, I'm completely sold out and they are now very hard to find. I got so many inquiries about this, that I decided I would help you guys out by selling the 2x8 PCIe riser with the PCIe slots cut open so you can use those to run your GPUs in your R710. Hey man, i just wanted to say Thank you for all your helpful video's. I purchased one of the riser cards from you and am up and running with the M2000. I know its not the P2000, but its works well for my UNRAID Plex server!!! GPU transcoding has taken my CPU's from almost maxing out 90-95%, on FreeNAS with 1 transcoding stream, to 8% on UNRAID with GPU Transcodong and 3 transcoded streams running. Now i could get more, but haven't had this up long enough to try.

    Hey, thanks for the video. I was wondering about the proximity of that fan on the graphics card and the lid of the R710. Will that cause the card to not get enough airflow and cause it to over heat?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  4 роки тому +1

      That's a good point, but I think it should be okay. The fan wall of the server is always supplying cool air to the PCIe slot, so it should be okay. I do agree, it's not the most ideal GPU cooler for this configuration, but I never did have a overheating problem with the GPU like this. In fact, replacing the GPU cooler with a large passive heatsink might work just as well since the server chassis already supplies the airflow... never tried it, but it could work.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  4 роки тому

      @Shayne Chambers Also, I made a 2x8 riser that would allow you to install the GPU in the lower slot, so that might make a better opening for the airflow into the stock GPU cooler. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/sSXA7CBLMCE/v-deo.html

    Hey! I'm sorry that this comment is super late, but I'd assume you are locked down by how much power the PCIE slot can supply, as obviously there are no 8 pin connectors available for GPU external power connection available. What are a few good graphics cards like this fine quadro you'd recommend for a windows parsec server?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 роки тому

      I don't know what is required for a Windows parsec server?
      There are several GPUs that don't require external PCIe power connectors. However, if you want to use a GPU that requires additional power, some people have tapped into the PDB to get 12V or spliced into the power cable for the backplane. Those are some options to get additional power to your GPU.

    • @zom.
      @zom. 3 роки тому

      @@ArtofServer I've seen quite a few people tap into the PDB, but I'd be really scared of frying my motherboard and messing up!
      Parsec really only needs an encoding chip, so my needs are an encoding chip, on a card with no extra power, that isn't completely awful! (Really, a GT 1030 with an encoder is perfectly fine!)
      Amazing video by the way!

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 роки тому

      @@zom. are you just using Nvidia nvenc and nvdec functions?
      if the PDB method is unnerving for you, look into splicing the power cable to the backplane. it should provide plenty of amps on the 12V rail since it's designed to handle 15K RPM SAS HDDs.

      The difference between 8 lanes Vs 16 is well known to be SFA. Just mod the slot with hot iron (Safer than a dremel). Now you still have other slot for cards or HBA's.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  3 роки тому

      The intent here is to use the GPU for GPGPU applications, like video transcoding in PLEX, or perhaps to passthrough to a virtual machine. I don't know of a way to have the Dell server use a add-in PCIe graphics card for console output.

    • @majoraslayer64
      @majoraslayer64 2 роки тому

      @@ArtofServer I have a similar question, so I'll piggyback on this comment. I'm actually using an R720, but the same concept applies. It IS possible to use a GPU for video output from the server, but you lose console video view for the iDRAC and the ability to access the BIOS. After lots of Googling and experimentation, I can confirm this; the way to make it work is to install the GPU, open the BIOS settings --> Integrated Devices, and disable integrated video. Afterwards if you need to restore iDRAC console remote video and access to the BIOS, disconnect the GPU and reboot. An important note, there is NO way to access BIOS settings (from everything I've tried and read) while the onboard video is disabled.
      However, my questions is slightly different. Related to this video, I have a spare GTX 1050 that conveniently doesn't need external power that I'd like to use just for transcoding. I've noticed without doing the above trick to use the GPU for video output, Linux Ubuntu 18.04 doesn't list the GPU as a video output option. I don't actually need to use it for video output since I just want to use it for compute, so how can I confirm Linux is seeing the GPU and will allow Plex to use it for transcoding?

    I was looking at the spec sheet for the R710, and it says the max power is 25W for efficient cooling. I have a few questions: 1) how much power can the PCI slot deliver to the card since there’s no molex connectors to provide additional power to the card, and 2) would it be better to upgrade the PSU to the 870W version or to get an external PSU and jerry-rig it to power the card? Also, 3) since the main concern regarding power draw appears to be cooling, would it be enough to cut a hole in the case lid where the fan on the GPU sits?

    Hey art,
    Great content as always. Do you know if there’s anyway I can get a p2000 to work inside a dell R620? The dell R620 is a 1u server and only has half height PCI slots. I have a supermicro 846 DAS attached to the R620 and would like to add the p2000 for better performance. I am thinking I could maybe place the p2000 inside the supermicro if necessary. Any ideas on what parts I would need to make this work?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  4 роки тому

      if you only have half height PCIe slots, I don't think the P2000 is a good option. I mean, anything is possible if you want to fabricate stuff and for example, run a PCIe ribbon cable to some other location to mount the GPU. But, that's a whole lot of trouble for not a lot of gain if there are easier options...
      And speaking of other options, I would say look at the Quadro P400. It has the 2 nvenc streams limit in the nvidia driver, but there's a way to workaround it, and even if you didn't, it might be enough depending on your use. I'll probably put out some videos about this too in the near future.

Trying to find NAS drives that are 2.5" I am finding a limit of 2TB on WD reds. do you know of any larger drives in the 2.5" format that would work well in this environment, for a ZFS build?? my fear with using laptop drives is, I have read that a lot of times they can not be used in arrays or NAS environment or will fail quicker.

      @ArtofServer  5 років тому

      Hmmm... there are 2.5" HDDs that are larger, but not "work well in this environment" ... most larger mechanical drives in 2.5" format are SMR drives and they are not great for things other than archiving data (write once, read many). Also, SMR drives don't seem to survive as long. You can find SSDs that are larger, but they are going to be a lot more expensive. So, unfortunately, I don't have great idea for you. Maybe someone else watching this might have some ideas?

      Art of Server heard and tanks so much for the reply. What do you think will be the probability of success in ordering a bare LFF and transferring ram/cpus and other stuff to a LFF from my current SFF? Even if I loose two drives I can get larger NAS drives for the space needed.
