Great to see Maze playing again and still at the elite level. He looked a little rusty, as would be expected. But he also showed flashes of the world-class player he was for many years. And still is!

excellent match! Maze's downfall was getting into a rally off the table....Timo won every time
Timo took it easy on him. Very humbly done. Maze was amazing, given his condition.... I wish everyone would have that respect for their opponent, the way these two had during this match. This century is all about screaming and showing off.

Michael still is one of the most entertaining players of the world circuit. What would have happened if he had no injuries and surgery?
I seriously reckon that if he had gotten his attitude in check and didn't suffer any serious injuries, he could have been Europe's next big hope against the Chinese. It's too bad things didn't pan out like that.
You can say the same about Timo. Timo had so many injuries in his prime that threw him back and even some time ago he had surgical treatment. He suffers from pain in the back, has problems with both knees. I remember a match between him and Joo when some cervical problems and still won... Its a wonder that he still plays and even at this level...
@@IgneelS11 I think Timo's game isn't as explosive as Michael His game is based on his raw power and speed and Timo relies on ball placement and overall consistency. Their technique are also quite different: Timo's movement is fluid and smooth and Michael just the opposite: quite akward movements, too much body strains, faster but unstable footwork. Because of his style he suffered a shorter life as a sportsman. That's he reason Timo still keeps on the top bit maybe Michael can't reach it anymore because of the injuries and his age.
Maze plays so much better after he announced 'he doesn't care anymore'! 🤣

Maze’s style definitely has shown its age and outdatedness in this match against the more modern style of Boll’s
Boll's style isn't very modern either.
Dick N. Ormous Boll has to some degree changed his style to suit closer to the table off the bounce
@@KoalaBear7 playing off the bounce spiny shots doesn't make much sense.The only adjustment he has made is not running around the backhand.
His forehand pivot was pretty bad anyway.
@@dickn.ormous1064 Why do you think playing off bounce against spiny shots isn't viable/ doesn't make sense? I'm not sure if I can agree with you on this.
Modern table tennis has made playing closer to table standard, at least in the pro scene. It is very rare nowadays to have soft blocker/defense plays because the game dictates speed now. Getting caught playing defense with the new ball/gameplay puts you way worse of a spot than previously. So now you'd rather take it off the bounce for speed to balance the pressure back on the offense.
Timo doesn't pivot anymore because the game now emphasizes backhand volleys much more because of new game speed. He's also older now.
Take a look at 5:55, 7:51, 9:25, 10:01.
@@KoalaBear7 Boll doesn't run around cause he twists his back every time he runs around the backhand.His sidesteping technique was simply non existent.
There was even a technical article in a Butterfly magazine of how Boll dealt with wide balls with photos .
The consensus was he had an extremely wide stance and simply twisted his spine to the side while dropping the shoulder.''He swings but his feet don't move at all'' was the remark.''His technique makes sidestepping unnecessary''.No wonder why he destroyed his back so early.
Taking the ball early emphasizes speed over spin.Harimoto being the perfect example.He doesn't hit flat,but he doesn't overspin either.

Timo looks always stiff against Maze even when he is far from his best shape. If Maze could play like in 2009 EC he would be top 10 in the world.

@@dickn.ormous1064 indeed, his footwork was always lacking, but notice how often he gets thrown off balance now. Wasn't anywhere near as severe when he was in his prime.
Footwork lacking?! You need to look at the old videos, watch his footwork as he plays Jan ove waldner. He is compensating brilliantly in respect to multiple surgeries
