You really take me back to my teens in the 60s -70s. Not many people play that style now. You have it perfectly in all your vids. First class :)
Thank you very much indeed. It is a rare style for some reason. Very sad. Thank you so much for watching. :)
Ritchie started using the Aiwa reel-to-reel for the Burn- era tour. Before that, during the Mk. II era tours, he used a Hornby Skewes treble booster. The treble booster was retired once the reel-to-reel came into use. Concerning Wah's, you can hear him use it occasionally during Mk. I (with Evans and Simper), but never later, I think.
Mine too. :) Spot on sound, man you're a genius. I would love to hear about his 90's era sound. Thanks and cheers.
Been watching your videos a lot today. Subscribed. Fantastic tone and playing. Keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you very much and thanks you ever so much for subscribing. That means a lot. :)
No problem buddy! It's good to see people on here without the gear snobbery.
awesome video Dave, would you please do one on how to relic a strat, it would be really cool :)
I shall do a vid as soon as i have a guitar i can relic. Thank you so much for watching. :)
I played a FenderJapan Blackmore Strat once. It had two Seymour Quarter Pounder pickups, and a dummy middle pickup. It had that sound.
great as always. Always look forward to your videos, dave. Always put a smile on my face. Killer playing as usual.
Man,Dave!!! You have really nailed Blackmore's tone right between the eyes!! I've been trying for this all my life, and haven't reached that goal yet...that little Orange head sounds great!!
Close, but obviously Ritchie played with a very clean technique and smaller, more controlled movements of both hands. Also, the neck pickup sound on Made In Japan was very sweet and sustaining - again, picked with the plectrum quite gently. It is a great sound though!
I'd say you really nailed it, Dave, except for a few of the higher notes which were a bit shrill, but that just may have just been the analog to digital conversion. I saw Deep Purple in 1985, I was in the front row, right in front of Ritchie, I know I lost a few points on my hearing test that night. Deep Purple were really at the top of their game on that tour, they played and sounded great and they got along onstage. What really impressed me about this video was that the amp didn't sound muddy with the treble all the way off, most amps just sound lousy when you turn the treble off. Great job!
Man, you were in the zone on this setup Dave. Great sound, and great playing. Have you been asked to do an Alex Lifeson sound like, that would be interesting 🤘🏻
I absolutely loved this sound. It definitely one of my favourites. I have been asked to Mr Alex. He's on the list. Thank you for watching. :)
Great video mate... I’ve been trying for the same sound for a while on a Peavey Classic 20 mini head and get fairly close but it never occurred to me to turn the treble right down...I had the bass down and treble up......you’ve made me look at tone from a different perspective so cheers for that...cool playing by the way...rock out bro
This is great, one piece I didn't catch you mention, and I watched 2x just to see, I think live (and occasionally in studio) he would use a phase of some kind, when with Rainbow. (Catch the Rainbow, Lady of the Lake, etc. ) I realize this was going for more of the Deep Purple tone, which you nailed by the way :-)
Dave, you are the master. Awesome tribute to my all time favourite guitarist. As always you totally nailed it. I know what you mean about the sound being unforgiving and you are spot on. Ritchie never really used much distortion, like Hendrix relying on the sheer crushing volume to make his guitar feel 'alive'. No distortion to hide behind means that any fluffed notes are there for all to hear..
Wow! You nailed it again. I've enjoyed all of these videos you're doing. Really loved this one and the Iommi one too as they are my two favorites. Thank you so much for doing these! Orange should employ you lol!! You're a fantastic player btw!
Nailed it! As always what stands out is your playing, 90% of "tone" comes from the fingers I'm sure! Thank you for sharing, I could listen to you play all day!
Man that sound was absolutely awesome. You sir are a true legend I love all of your videos your playing is just mind blowingly awesome! Could you do a video on your opinion on valve vs solid state amps and is the cr120 valve or solid state it sounds awesome thanks again.
Thank you very much and I shall be getting round to that video next week. Mister Knight Owl is correct, It is solid state. :)
Hey man,
You played so well in this video that it left me inspired to learn Blackmore's stuff even more than before! It sounded really like his amp+Strat settings, switching between the pickups during the solo is crucial and you just played fantastically well.
A cool idea would be if you could upload videos up close of the fretboard when you play through the songs so others can see and learn. Cheers!
Thank you very much. He is a great player to study and learn from. Crazy playing. :) I'll see what i can do on the close up front. Thank you very much again. :)
Awesome ritchie blackmore stuff you play it great dave dave have you listened to roy buchanan and also robben ford they are awesome guitarist's.
Love that mean sound! Sounds very close to the California Jam tone. Am sure Eric Bell gets a similar sound. Great stuff. :)
You da man Dave! Love the vids, you always bring the goods no matter what style you do 🤘
you nailed it! I am a huge Ritchie fan, even did his scallop on a Strat I used to have(although my playing sounds nothing like him).
abit of Ritchie trivia: that red 335 disappeared when Ritchie's first wife took and pawned it! I'm guessing she was pretty pissed at him! LOL Some of his guitars with Blackmore's Night are made by Godin, a Canadian company, if I remember correctly. He also has a signature Engl amp, which, from what I understand, can get some absolutely brutal heavy tones... I love Ritchie!!!
oh yes man! I've owned an Cr120 yesterday and I've wanted to answer you if it was possible to do a blackmore tone! juste perfect haha thx man you're right!!! french fan
Btw, when Bonamassa did a version of Lazy for the Machine Head tribute, he remarked that he found it really challenging and was sweating!
Nice sound
I really think you nailed his tone very impressed with this head well done and thanks
Hi Dave, the only time I ever heard Blackmore use a wah was on the title track of the 'Stormbringer' album towards the end. In 1995 he used one on the ending of a song on the Rainbow album 'Stranger in us all'. As you say, pretty minimalist in terms of fx, but he was big on octave pedals in the early-mid 80s. Great vid, thank you for it.
I happen to watch Ritchie B videos today and Yes that’s pretty darn close ~ note for note tones ..
A fab sotw!! I used to use a Phillips reel to reel as a preamp in the 70s with a zenta practice amp. Sounded like Brian may. 😎😎
Incredible again dave!...uncanny ear for finding that tone!...or is it your timing and fingers!? 😄👍🏻🌟🎸
One of my favourite deep purple songs which is a instrumental called wring that kneck from their first album its so awesome the life version is the best.
Another excellent video! Dave, what cabinet (and speakers) did you use for these videos?
Thank you very much. Here I am using a Marshall AX cab with 4 30 watt speakers. : )
Superb Dave - nailed it! What kind of fender strat are you using in the video??
Thank you very much and its not actually a fender. Its a Partscaster i have put together. The only thing fender on it is the tremolo. Thank you so much again. :)
Being a Marshall user and not very familiar with Orange I have to say they really do conjure up a lot of great tones Dave! Great playing as well! 👍🏽
great video as usual! love
blackmore's solo from black knight, first time I heard an atonal solo in classic rock
Glad you covered the moody & difficult man in black. He's my favourite.
What Cabinet do you use with the Orange Cr120?-Great Video as always
Here i am using a marshall ax cab but i normally use a marshall jcm900 cab. : )
this is insane how close you get to the actual tones! i'd love to see you try eddie van halen or joe perry
Thank you very much and and there both on the list. I'll get to them at somepoint. :)
wow! this amp never stops lol. btw you should add the amp name in the title of these videos, everyone looking up these amps will find these awesome videos :)
What cab are you plugged in, straight after the CR120H? Lovely take on RB's tone profile!
@@thedavesimpson Thanks! Gotta agree with you : cant' get enough of that kind of tone and the playing that goes with it... exhausting though when you don't want/can't stop haha! Cheers
What are you using to record the sound for your videos the sound quality of your videos are great
I am only using the cameras built in mic in this video. Thank you for watching. : )
10:45 Dave your quick picking style is excellent. I wish more guys would use that technique.
Another amazing video Dave nice work! Any chance of a Mike McCready video in the future? I feel like that one would be right in your wheelhouse
Thank you very much and indeed there is a 100% chance of a Mike video. He's one of my heroes and i shall get to him very very soon. Just got to get a few other people in first. :)
something about that guitars low output pickups and that amp makes a magical sound. Do these pickups have ceramic bar magnets? Great playing and the channel by the way...I watched nearly all of your videos! You manage to get the sound across without using any fancy cab mic'ing thrills or anything like that.
They do indeed have that magnet. Thank you very much indeed and i'm so happy you like what i do. :)
Add like a Hornsby Skewes Treble booster to that thing and I'm sure you'd get the early Blackers tone is spades.
Dave, Fantastic video as always !! I am very keen to understand Keith scott's tone (Bryan Adams).. can you do it !! Cheers
You forgot the T in Ritchie
Im planning on buying an Orange Crush 35rt so I was wondering can I get that similiar Blacmore tone with it?
You will be able to get close yes. The 35rt is a great little amp. :)
Great vid as always Dave. Please, Please, Please do a tones vid of Ty Tabor from Kings x, as he uses cr120s now. ok begging over keep up the good work.
Great playing and I applaud you on your in depth knowledge of all the old great guitarists my favourites being Jimi and Rory, both which you do so well. Did you ever get into the Mighty Groundhogs Tony McPhee or Edgar Broughton, two lesser known but tremendous guitarists. Cheers :)
Thank you very much. I did get into the ground hogs a little but not massively. There are awesome players. Thanks again. :)
Nice Tone Dave! Would be great if you would cover Albert King in an episode....the amp would be very nice for that...peace!
Thank you very much and that would be an awesome tone to try and get. I'll put him on the list. Thank you again. :)
hey dave can you do a video for Randy Rhoads tone, i am really diggin it, specially the distorted tone from song "flying high again".
You rock dude!
I experienced Deep Purple in Norway sometime in the 80es. Marshalls then. Tell us Dave, in your opinion.
Obviously the Orange provide high quality clear tones. Is it anything that lacks in the Orange sound compare to the Marshalls. Through the Pc they can sound like lacking a little punch, or beat ?
It does;t quite have the same mid range and its different to a marshall's mid range. Other than that though its the same. : )
great vid i would like to hear you to play wring that kneck one of purples early instrumentals.
The Blackmores Knight era guitar you couldn't recall ... was a Lakewood acoustic
Great video Dave!
Have you ever thought of getting like a microphone to mic up the amps?
I get that this might be expensive so maybe you could set up something like a patreon or something?
Thank you very much. I have but like you say its very expensive and i couldn;t afford it in a million years. I love the fact though that the camera gives you an idea of the whole cab and not just one speaker. Just sounds a little bigger and warmer to me than the videos of that have one speaker mic'd. I feel it tends to make it a little sterile. Thank you again for watching. :)
String gauges?
You can hear him using a Wah-Wah pedal by the end of Stormbringer by Deep Purple and didn't used bass in his personal EQ until he switched to ENGL amps, though, still, I really loved your version!
Thank you for the info and thanks for watching and enjoying the vid. :)
+Dave Simpson Hey, no problems, hope wasn't offensive or anything, you keep doing the great job now! and I subbed :)
evh, billy gibbons and leslie west, then you can be done with this series. lol had to watch it twice. thanks for making the vids.
Excellenti Presidenti 👍🏻🎶🎸🎩
Blackmore really was a monster of a guitar player
Super job Dave - very close imho
Ps I sure he used some kind of phasing/pgl phlanging on Mistreated - to my ears anyhow
Thankyou
Waiting for Duane to complete the true greats 😉
Thank you very much indeed. He did indeed use a phaser in Catch The Rainbow and delay in Mistreated. Thank you again. :)
I don't know if you'll see this, but I love the content your putting out, but could you get a better mic please? The stuff you do is awesome, but I can barely hear it, maybe get some external mics, or plug it in through an audio interface? I dunno.
Thank you very much for liking what i do and as much as i would like to do that i don't have the ability or money to do it. :(
***** Oh okay, but that won't stop me from watching,Thanks for doing what you do (:
Good effort. Pretty close sound wise but totally different technique.
Thanks very much for watching. I have a different technique because I'm not Richie. :)
Great,!!!Man
what riff did dave play after smoke on the water? sounds great :)
Its a Deep Purple song called Blood Sucker. Its great but gets over looked alot. Its off the in rock album. :)
I ... A ....WA ... thankyouverymuch
You get damn close to his sound and it's funny because I read somewhere that Ritchie had his treble dimed for amp settings.
Hardly matters anymore but he used a wah on one song I can’t remember for the Stranger in is All album. Very weird to hear him use it
What's the song at 10.40
Its called Mistreated and the bit where i clean up the guitar is the Live Beat Club version of a song called No No No. :)
I don't mean to sound bossy here brother, but if you aren't familiar with Toy Caldwell's work, you should check him out and see if you can nail his tone, too, because it's another VERY elusive sound!!
I've always thought you are a ringer for Richie circa 74-76 before he got his wig. ;-)
You are really the first person I've ever heard that sounded like Ritchie. His sound is unique and immediately recognizable. Great job figuring all this out and sharing it with us.
In the Rainbow era he used a flanger and delay for Catch the Rainbow and a few other tunes.
Thank you very much. :)
