- The students of the Chicago School of Rock perform "Straight To Hell" at their tribute to The Clash.
This song wasn't listed in the program, but I think I've identified all the musicians. Let me know if I got any wrong
Lead Vocals: L*ke S*ngerman
Guitars: Colin Bickler
Guitars: Jessica Ruiz
Bass: Evan Reifman
Shaker: Declan Beyer
Rainstick: Taylor Voss
Wood Blocks: Niko Tena
Drums: Nick Gordon
Keys: Jason Krause
Note: Due to some high school's moronic and shortsighted policy, I'd been asked to obscure one name.
as a clash fan I was very dubious about watching this. However it is brilliant. Amazing guys! Rip joe
Great job! I hope all these kids are still involved in music.
a difficult song to cover, but did it brilliantly!
I wanna Go home now...i want so much Go home , today..hve such a big heart butvmy child.......even dark magick.......i loved her so damn much its ......
The result of good parenting.
Got chills. This is my favorite of the Clash. The vocalist has an nice voice. Sounds like it’d belong to someone much older than him. I like the emotion.
what an odd song for these kids to do (I love this song, btw). I wonder if they even know what the song is about. Pretty cool though.
It was part of a full concert devoted to The Clash, and this particular song was a last-minute addition.
The lead singer was 16 at the time, and I'm quite confident he was fully aware of the meaning and the emotions of the song. Back in the Vietnam War era, a 16 year old boy would be worried about being drafted, or could have had an older brother already over there, or recently returned from it. A 16 year old could easily imagine himself in that place. By the way, at 16 he got hired as the drummer for the Chicago version of the Blue Man Group, beating out over 150 pros at an open audition and getting a Union gig.
I love the world-weariness of his performance, that he was someone who had been through the hell of war. It honestly gave me goosebumps while I was shooting this.
As for the rest of them, they learn and practice these songs over the course of twelve 3 hour rehearsals, guided by an older, experienced musician. I know a lot of the teachers, and they care passionately and deeply about music, and I'm sure some of them would consider it their duty to explain the song.
I'm sure it is the subject of much debate among Clash fans, but I believe the song is from the perspective of a Vietnam war veteran reminiscing with his buddies.
When I read the lyrics, I'm reminded of Cornishman Cyril "Rick" Rescorla, one of the heroes of 9/11. He volunteered to fight in the US Army in Vietnam and was featured in the book "We Were Soldiers Once… And Young". On 9/11, he was working as director of security at Morgan Stanley and managed to get 2,687 employees out of the building and went back into the building to look for stragglers and was killed.
thats only one part, most parts are about britain and immigrants and how immigrants live, now and then
It's about US soldiers in Vietnam who had children with the locals then abandoned them.
It's actually not just about US soliders and Vietnam. It also references immigration into British Society and also the shutting down of steel mills and unemployment in England.
❤️oh joe strummer WE thought in the 70th the Generation was cold . If U knew how cruel the Zombies are these days 2022.....year of the devil while god has left the building....cool Boys kids
good job
Brilliant
Wow seriously someone needs to get this to Simon Cowell....and the singer what a voice...American Idol look out:)
That's a GREAT cover! I was at the show and it was mesmerizing.
Brilliant version and performance of the song. I'm quite surprised by the choice of song, it's a little obscure and incredibly social & political. Combat Rock is one of my fave albums of all time. They should do Inoculated City next! or was that song done as part of the concert devoted to The Clash?
It was an all-Clash show. This is one of my all-time favorite School of Rock performances - the singer really dug deep into the lyrics, and saw himself as a veteran, scarred by the horrors of war and guilt. I've since done two Clash shows in the last few months, another one by the Chicago School of Rock and one by the Oak Park location. The teachers at the School know that the Clash were the "only band that matters."
shh, i love this. great
This is so good
Luke great job on vocals
Great job! The Clash will always be my favorite band.
Very good this song, congratulations , forever The Clash...
Go Declan and Niko!! Great job by all. Joe Strummer would be proud of you all. He was brilliant.
