  • Welcome to #Youtober 2021 🧡 -- I've sat on this one for a night because I'm already worried I didn't say everything I could have and it may land wrong -- so just a few more thoughts to fill in the gaps for the time being (but again, these are ongoing conversations that I'll keep sharing as I continue to understand and grow).
First, my point blank belief is that all living beings and things; regardless of nature, culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, mental health, ability, beliefs and even species [I personally believe animals and nature also deserve more respect if not rights], deserve equal rights, opportunity, compassion, individuality and respect.
Second, from my understanding, Peterson's viewpoint is around his issue with the government controlling speech and not so much the context of the speech they are controlling. (Censorship and controlling speech being a whole other conversation I can't fully have until I've finished unpacking it myself)
Third, if you disagree with anything I've said, I honour that and your right to disagree with me - even I disagree with viewpoints I've had before and am likely to one day look back and realize I have learned more to see things differently than I do now! I'd be alarmed if we all saw the world through the same lens without change and I'm always open to hearing new perspectives or learning things I don't know yet or may still be ignorant to. My intentions are always to learn as much as I can and to do my part to elevate the world to a lighter, brighter place.
Here is the podcast episode I listened to: • Leaving the Cult of Wo...

"And that if we do not agree on every single thing, it's a sign that we are interacting with an enemy - or at the very least, someone to be wildly suspicious and judgmental of...instead of another complex human being worthy of being seen and heard." THIS!

One thing to note, sex and gender are separate. Sex is biological and gender is a social construct. So your body is assigned a sex not a gender. You are assigned gender by society. It's an important distinction when discussing the topic. Just to put it out there for more awareness.

LOVE the dance parties. Also love it when you talk about heavy/hard topics, but I understand what you mean. I think it is a really hard balance to find what is helpful and what is "performative". I think you are doing a good job. Just go with what feels right. We love you!

I really appreciate you opening up about these topics. I have also felt the pressure around the topic of activism online and the unspoken pressure of needing to share something just because you have an account. Having strong morals and aiming to actually help others in real life feels more right to me than simply sharing a post online. This is one of my favourite videos from you so thank you!

I love vlogs like this. Down to earth and honest and real. I think we are all alike more than we think and should just take the time to listen to each other as well as celebrate our differences and what makes us unique. I’m having a fantastic autumn. I’ve grown up in Florida where we didn’t have seasons and now I’ve moved to an area that has leaves changing and crisp, cool weather. I love it! 🧡

I completely agree with your points in this video. So many influencers try to get praise for speaking about "difficult topics," but those topics are exactly what everyone else talks about and they would get "canceled" if they didn't lol. It is so courageous in this day and age to even slightly go against the grain, when really, most of us want the same things in the end (justice, peace, etc.) ❤️

Jordan Peterson was my psychology professor at UofT. I'm really glad you have an open mind and are exploring his ideas. I don't agree with him on everything, but I do agree with him on many things. I find the media usually takes his remarks out of context and twists them into something they are not. In any case, I always thought that if the people who hated him saw him genuinely tear up at the suffering of humanity, many of them would have a change of heart. He's a sharp intellect, but he's also a good person.

The worst thing we can do is NOT discuss the social issues that define our society. That’s where the healthy dialogs happen. New and different points of view. Staying open and respectful. That’s it. 💜

I’d really benefit from a video on how to deal with a narcissist and how to cope after being raised by one if you’re ever open to making that video. I’ve been trying to set boundaries but it’s so tough.

My mom has borderline personality disorder (which is close to narcissism in some ways but also differs obv), I people-please way to much but I am learning how to set boundaries and it gives me hope to see the progress you've made. It's really difficult not being your care-takers first priority and internalizing it when you're young but I hope we're all healing together

  • @JOY0413

I really do believe it is so important to have these open dialogs to share different perspectives. I would say my political views were more liberal, and I started dating a guy this year with more conservative views. We are completely respectful of each other and willing to hear each other out, and the result has been the most amazing conversations of my life. It has been such an eye-opening experience falling in love with someone who holds different views, because I think previously I would fall victim to passing judgements too quickly on people who think differently than me and my close friends/family. We have learned so much from each other, and now I can bring that learning to how I interact with the world. You realize that most people are just trying their best, or unaware of their own blind spots. The only thing I can't agree with is when people are motivated by fear or power. Fear is what divides people. Power is ego. I have hope for the collective that we will rise above

Thank you for sharing this. I think it's important to have more space to discuss how we hold perspectives and conversations about these topics. Social issues are never cut and dry since they are often deeply rooted systemic issues manifested through complex individual human beings. It's easier to default to upsetting emotions since they are inherently upsetting situations, which can lead to reactions of looking for fault and blame in others and falsely simplifies the "solution." I live by the hope that we as a collective can move more in the direction of healing, which is a messy complicated process that is in no way straightforward or linear, but in my opinion beyond essential. Kalyn I think the conversations you initiate foster a space for healing so I just want to say that I'm super grateful!

Thank you so much for opening up. I wholeheartedly agree with your views on virtue signalling. We live in a world where if you don't like something the easiest way to deal is to cancel it. But this is not helping anyone actually understand different points of views. People are complicated, and we don't all have the same life experience, which is why the individual voice is so important. Great vlog! No matter what you say, I will be here, and I think that you have a lot of people following your life who feel the same way.

  • @jessicagilpin8311

YES! Please keep speaking your mind about these hard conversations. I think social justice is heading in such a dangerous direction where not only people who speak against this idea of "wokeness" are villainized, but those who identify as victims are really being held back. I could go on, but Africa's letter explains it beautifully.
The extreme social justice these days has really made it difficult for me to truly connect with even my own friends. If I express the problems I see with any of these movements going on today, I fear I'll be shunned or they'll think less of me (despite their claims that they accept anyone and everyone - apparently that doesn't apply to differing opinions).
I'm so thankful that you've started to express some of your views on these matters, Kalyn! I've felt connected to you for years since we share so many interests and it's so nice to know that we also seem to share so many important view points - the most important being that everyone deserves respect no matter their opinion. Thank you for your courage and compassion!

I absolutely LOVE that you’re talking about this! I’ve been waiting to hear more of your own thoughts on these topics. And I highly recommend the book Nice Racism if you want to go deeper into how to engage without virtue signaling. There’s a talk on UA-cam where the author dives into that topic as well if you’d rather listen to a condensed version than read the whole book right now. But I would LOVE to have more open conversations and go harder into these topics if you’re comfortable. I believe that if anyone wants to be a good ally to oppressed communities they need to be comfortable engaging & learning, which means it’s okay to make mistakes. Just be willing to grow & learn & change. But avoiding sharing & engaging out of your own need for comfort doesn’t help. I know we all aren’t changing our platforms to activist platforms but, change and true support only comes from being open to engage and learn (I feel.) So, I’d love to hear more from you & have the chance to engage more about topics like this.

I also want to add- I have so much respect for influencers, companies, etc who speak up without just promoting the EXACT same message for fear of repercussions. It's a dangerous thing when people partake in group think just so that they don't get attacked or cancelled. ALL viewpoints are welcome! We can have a mature discussion about it. I wish more people felt like that or were brave enough to do it.

I really really appreciate the honest and real talks, thank you so much Kalyn for opening up!! My sister is 13, growing up in seemingly a different era compared to my childhood (I'm 24) where activism and gender identification is more rooted in her upbringing based on the topics that are just being talked about more in society and online. At least when I was growing up I feel like I lacked exposure to those topics and I can really feel the impact of that now as an adult. Although your intention for being online isn't to be an activist, I can understand how you can feel the pressure, definitely. I really value your opinion and views, thank you for sharing. p.s. I love the dance parties!! 💜

Kalyn, I have SOO much respect for what you just did in this episode!!!! I have been following JBP for a while now and it wasn’t until I found Africa (she’s an absolute angel!!) earlier this year that I was really able to fully release some of the guilt and shame I was holding on to around this idea of “being bad” because I intuitively felt like some of the narratives in current mainstream culture are more harmful than helpful, esp. to the people they are supposed to be helping. God, I even feel uncomfortable typing that because I know easily I could be condemned for it by people who won’t take the time to understand where I’m coming from. Because in reality, it’s EXACTLY like you said - thinking of people as “LESS than” because of an identity marker they can’t change just has never made sense to me.
Seeing you be courageous enough to talk about these things has been really really encouraging and I hope you know that there are people who absolutely get it and are cheering you on ❤️

Oh yes, I remember when that stance made sense in my mind -- believing that if we could all come together under the same understandings and pure-intended laws, we would be able to find more unity and create a more peaceful coexistence but I'm no longer so naive to believe that could work when there is so much unfortunate greed and corruption -- especially as you climb up closer to the pinnacle of current power. Centralized control won't bring world peace, but I still do believe collective understanding, appreciation for our differences and unencumbered compassion for one another could. In my rosy coloured dream of the planet, coming together as one world, one earth, one love interconnected with all species, where humans use their consciousness, intelligence and advancements to honour, cherish, protect and balance the planet we inhabit, and small communities grow more connected, taking care of one another with no one left behind and our individual strengths celebrated and utilized in said communities - this would be my ideal utopia ♥️ Thanks for sticking around!!

I know you didn't start your journey, or a planning to continue your journey as a labeled "activist" yet we all know you as well have your thoughts and views on everything that happens in our world. I didn’t expect to want to chime in here, but I just read Africa’s letter. Thank you for sharing!! It touched me and definitely vocalized much of my unspoken thoughts and feelings. I agree with her(and you!!). One thing I’ve been struggling with sharing with the world is that I believe many of these fights we seem to be having now - racism, sustainable living, climate change, moral food consumption, sexism - aren’t going to ever be won simply because we’re fighting AGAINST them. We have to create and build the world we want instead of cancelling the one we don’t. I am unshakably of the belief that if we, individually and collectively, wake up and remember who we all are and why we came here to this life in the first place and embody the power we all have, all these battles we are fighting would look worlds different and, dare I say it, much less important and impossible to solve. 💗🌎 Keep opening up on these, as you do you give others the courage to as well. And I think that’s what we all need right now.

Enjoyed this video and really appreciated your perspectives. I know I struggle with feeling like I don’t know enough about topics to have those conversations but on the flip side as a person living with an invisible disability, in relation to those topics I have more I can confidently talk about. On my journey, I’ve learned that sometimes it is better to use your voice/your platform to lift up the people who do have the experience and education to talk about these really important life and social issues. White people shouldn’t speak for people of colour the same way abled bodied people shouldn’t speak for the disabled. We have a responsiblity to do our own research and share what we learn so that the burden of these necessary learnings fall onto the people who are already dealing with the issues everyday of there lives.
Really appreciate these conversations and look forward to more 🧡

I love listening to podcasts and stuff from all over the political spectrum. I think as humans we like throwing people in boxes and categories, when in reality people and beliefs are soooo complex. They’re so much more than a political party, religion, education levels etc. I think there’s a healthy middle where you can educate yourself about all different perspectives and find out what matches your values. Instead of automatically being told your a bad person if you don’t align with certain issues. It’s degrading our society, and our ability to be unified when people start boxing people into these micro groups. I have people in my close circle from all different religious beliefs, political beliefs etc and we all get along because we see each other as HUMANS - not a political party or anything other category. I also agree it’s unfair that everyone online is expected to be an activist, because activism is super counter productive when your not actually educated or passionate about the issue, your just taking that stance because everyone else is without actually deep diving on its roots. Ok I’m rambling!!! Love you and your content!!!💕🌸

Would you ever expand more on your relationship with that person? I'm in the same position with the alleged as well with her. Talking about healing your inner child, tips for forgiving her, etc. If not, I completely understand, it's very personal and complicated.

I've missed your vlogs, I'm gonna catch up this week. I agree with the "Activist" movement, I'm still figuring things out and understand many things will be bigger than me. October has been a month of unlearning and healing, I've been overwhelmed ting this month.

I love your dance parties! Just had to get that one in.. :) I love the down to earth vlogs. It really gets me thinking about who I am. I would love to see a vlog that talks about what to do when you don't like the person you are. I feel like I am so lost on who I am, or that I don't like who I am. I can be in a group of people talking, and I will feel this overwhelming feeling of loneliness and like no one really cares. It usually ends in me shutting off and wishing I never opened my mouth. I'm the kind of person that talks too much and never says the right thing, and I am painfully aware of it. It's been a journey trying to change who I am because every morning I have to renew my ambition. It's hard to remember to be different when this is who I am, ya know? Some Monday morning thoughts.. :)

I get the concern about virtue signaling. But we need to talk about justice, inclusion, the earth, etc. so that we are not allowing the haters to dominate the conversation online and in the general media. If we have privilege, we are, IMHO, obligated to use that privilege to help those who do not. There's a lot of rhetoric about "two sides to every story"...but that excuse is being used in places like Texas to say that any school conversation about racism, difficult history, or even (recently), the Holocaust has to be "balanced" with the opposite views. Some things, like killing millions of people or claiming that owning other human beings has "another side" is dangerous.

I agree completely! I don't think we should cease all important social justice and eco-health conversations on account of virtue signalling, but I believe we should take a moment to be aware of our motivations as well as the motivations of others or more powerful sources when it comes to these conversations. If there's even the tiniest wiff of self-righteousness or hidden self-interest when speaking up about these things it changes the pinnacle of the conversation from being about actually creating great change, learning from our history or helping the world become a better place for all to boosting ego, trying to earn public brownie points or the worst, using the hurt and oppression of others as a catalyst to affirm moral 'goodness' to the world, which feels sickening to me for the personal reasons I mentioned. I respect your perspective but I personally do believe there are billions of sides to every story, as every living being has a perspective or 'side', and while I can see the trail that can make that idea dangerous, I think it can be equally if not more dangerous to cut ourselves off from trying to understand the points of view of people we STRONGLY disagree with or have done incredibly twisted, horrendous things that led to the horrific incidents that have occurred to date. *I'm not saying we need to agree with the other sides of the story or give any kind of respect, balance or credit to it* -- but when you strip away all the details and look at it solely from a fundamental, philosophical point of view, if we fail to try to understand let alone avoid bringing awareness to the seeds that root hate in the world, then we are doomed to repeat it or stay stuck on the things that keep us divided. Everyone is justified in their own minds, it's in learning how these justifications take place from an impersonal point of view that we can better understand how such horrible things happen and hopefully use that knowledge to stop or spot potential dangerous ideas or people in the future. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me ♥

Thank you for your thoughtful discussion. I think this is quite risque content and I'd recommend anyone who listens to the podcast or reads the open letter to do so with an open AND a critical mindset. Otherwise, it's not the best ideas that will out, but those who articulate them the most coherently (of which I agree, Jordan Peterson is very articulate).
"Wokeism" is a re-branding of a form of activism that has been around for literally decades. In the UK we call it no-platforming. I think the letter tries to include a lot of diverse practices and ideas under the brand of "woke" as a way to discredit it and there's a lot I would disagree with in it.
I'm going to protect my peace and not listen to the Jordan Peterson podcast as I'm sure I'll have more to say about that! I know I'm in an echo chamber and part of the problem of left v. right etc., and at the same time, I'm not willing to debate human rights. I think online connection can only go so far and to make real in-roads to close the divide we need to connect more with our communities face to face.

I also got hooked on Jordan Peterson but if you really delve deep into his opinions and perspectives he has extremely fucked up ideologies of women especially and society in general. I feel it goes against what your channel is about and there are many people getting blindsided by him as he packages his opinions in a way that people don't fully understand what he's saying and uses language to make himself agreeable to the masses.
I never usually comment on videos but I strongly urge you to deeper research into Jordan Peterson, he has conservative opinions and ideas without fully committing to his words as to be favoured by all. Really poisonous type of political commentator.

I’m still trying to figure out what ways I can best make a positive difference without virtue signaling or having a savior complex. Those are not my goals but I need to be aware of my actions and who I might actually be hurting and am I really just saying something to say something but do nothing about it. This year I’ve spent a lot of time working on my social media algorithms and listening to people who are not white and cis gender like me. I’ve learned so much from people’s real life experiences on tik tok (UA-cam too) from people of all races, genders, sexualities, abilities, ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, different sizes, etc. I’ve learned as a white person, it’s really easy for my algorithms to default to just a few different types of people and content so I actively have to make that change. I also have been making sure to give my time and viewership to media that’s not by people like me as well. I’ve been asking myself why I want to share things before I do and will it be effective or is there another way I can make a difference. It’s a journey that I plan on working on for the rest of my life bc I’ll never know it all. I will make mistakes. I will need to listen and say sorry sometimes. Either way, I’m trying and you are too. Hopefully this community you have can help each other out with figuring the best ways for each of us to do something in our own helpful ways.
Remember humans have confirmation bias and seek people we see ourselves in (studies show this in hiring and other instances) so we have to work against those biases.
Not all in a group or community are the same, obviously, but it is important to look at groups and communities to spot social structures that disproportionately harm certain groups.
I studied sociology and women and gender studies in college and I’m still learning every day. Sociology taught me the importance of noticing groups and communities that are harmed by the patterns of certain social structures and institutions. I’ve been working on learning about psychology now so I can notice the things certain individuals may face. I hope to go to grad school one day and use the understanding of the two to break down harmful things in this world.
I’m thankful for you bringing this up bc a lot of us are also trying to figure out what to do. You have such a safe community of people willing to share experiences and advice. Thank you so much for that❤️.

I'm glad you felt able to share Kalyn and keep parts in that you may have cut out previously. It makes so much sense why you feel uncomfortable talking about certain topics at times as you explained. I could resonate with alot of what you said probably because I have a similar perspective to you and somehow I felt lighter after watching this vlog 💛 I find it difficult discussing some things openly for fear of criticism or conflict but it has really made me think about how to speak about sensitive topics and know that my view is valid as much as another individual's with different opinions and experiences. Also it was lovely to see you beaming when talking about your family events and the support of your partner recently. 💛
