lived on a property in Upstate NY in the early 90's. Had a yellow and black one latch on to me as I was working around the farm pond (filled with trout fry). This was one serious insect! Thanks for the 'fun facts'. PS: the fry would get to the 3-4" range and then the resident Blue Heron would stop by for a repast.
I think he should also revisit some of the lures he made in the past maybe with a different action or paint scheme on them like a different colored dragon fly or trying to make a turtle with a different style of action. So what if you made one before, if you think you can make one better then show us what you can do, we all would love to see what you can do.
OK, you asked for ideas for your next lure, here's my "outside the box" challenge for you. Bass, pike, muskie, etc. all go for mice, rats, squirrels, etc. I've watched many of your videos and see your German Shepherd (such a gorgeous dog) and how you two get along. I think you should make a chipmunk sized copy of your dog and take your dog lure fishing! :-) Good luck, should you accept this challenge!!! Love your channel! You are very talented, thanks for sharing it with us!!!
Came across your channel like 2 months ago or so, your work and techniques are amazing to watch. I literally binge watched 90% of your videos in a day. Your editing and production has come a long way and it's amazing to see.
Ur the van-go of bait making ive started carving again thanks to u which reminds me of my grandpaw we use to whittle all the time untill he passed away thanks for the insperation u rock id love to buy some of ur swim baits
I think you would be able to make a soft-body version of that lure. It would obviously have less detail, but the legs seem robust enough to be able to withstand a molding. Or do a mix of soft and wood body, like a salamander balsa body and legs, stick a hook out the back, and you could have various soft tails (different sizes and colors) you could then thread onto the hook and be able to change them up.
Look at the eggs on its back... why God....LOL I've seen them swimming before... pretty neat. I've also seen them fly! I have a nightlight that I have seen them attracted to. Don't know if they were attracted by the light like moths or attracted to other bugs that were attracted by the light that maybe they were eating. Pretty wicked looking insects and you made it look real! I bet it would catch something in the spring

FYI @11:11, I noticed a little bit of smoke coming up behind your right shoulder in the background. Just thought I'd mention seeing it JIS you weren't already aware! I look forward to seeing what you'll come up with next, I think Benjamin james13 came up with a pretty cool idea w/ the lightning bug.
I would just like to thank you! My wife and I have started placing bets on if you will catch a fish at the end of your videos and lets just say you have made me quite a bit of money. :) Keep up the amazing work.
I know it’s winter and all however I’d be very interested to see how you’d approach creating a whopper plopper style top water bait. Maybe something a little less traditional but with the same concept. That would be my vote! Also, you should totally do a video in the spring or summer with the baits you had created this winter when fish is tough. A lot of the baits you made would totally slay on a good fishing day!
Once again very nicely done. You have a great way of talking to us on camera, quite funny without trying to be! Love the videos and you explain steps well without over doing it. Love your channel. Can't wait to see what the lathe work is going to bring...
i'm also suprised that im not bored when i watch ur videos so that means ur not boring to me yay ur very lucky most youtubers i used to watch that made fishing lures are quite boring BUT NOT U
I've just recently discovered your channel and I've been gorging myself! You have inspired me to get out of the house and wet a line. Great Vids! Keep it Up!
I love your bug lure videos, bugs are my obsession. The detail is exquisite, it's really a work of art. Here are some more fun facts: Toe Biters are found worldwide, and are considered a tasty snack in many parts of Asia. Toe Biters are in the order Hemiptera (from the Greek words for Half and Wing), which are called "True bugs," or bugs with sucking mouth parts, an order which contains aphids, stink bugs, and cicadas (which you also made
I want to get into Lure making like this. My father in law is a retired biologist / habitat rebuilder for the Wyoming game and fish and has advised me against using lead in baits. Do you have any other suggestions for metals to use in baits? I have heard of people using steel washers as well as melted tungsten just want your opinion if I could pick your brain.
@@gunnerbaker1426 my father in law went to school as a biologist and started bottom rung in the game and fish and worked his way up the food chain around the state. Ultimately he retired as the manager for that department. I would contact your local game and fish office and see if you can sit down and talk with them about what they do. It's my wife's father so I do not have a ton of knowledge on the subject. My wife is going into a similar field and she is currently getting a bachelor's in wildlife biology and wants to work with the game and fish to rebuild bird habitats. The field requires a biology degree I can tell you that for sure.
Tungsten melts at 6192 degrees Fahrenheit you could chisel or drill out a hollow spot and insert a small tungsten weight but if you are able to melt tungsten you can't pour it into something made of wood without burning up all the wood.
@@canaan5337 so cut the hole and just secure weights into it and test? Waterways around here are said to outlaw lead within 5 years so I wanna be prepared.
@@MurderOfTheCrows put a small tungsten weight in the hole put a piece of Scotch tape on it and test it that way you can test and retest till you get it where you want it and then fill in the rest of the hole with superglue and baking soda
Hey you inspired me to try and paint some of my soft swimbaits because I can't duel inject some of my molds you are an awesome artist keep it up love your videos !!!!
This lure is freaking awesome. Big fan of all your lures. This thing can legit pass as a bug. Scare the crap out of someone when you aren't fishing with it lol
I was going to repeat some funny one liner you spoke, then you would say another. And then another. You are hilarious with some mad skills, fellow Iowan. Be safe, brother
I'm an entomology student and I find it so interesting when you make your insect lures! Belostomatids are pretty intimidating to mess with. My professor told us stories of them swarming the lightpoles where he used to live and falling on him! There are a lot of cool insects that live in the waters as adults and as juvenilles. Dragonfly and damselfly naiads would be an interesting lure possibly. They have an extendable labrum (basically their bottom jaw) that shoots out to catch food similar to how a frog's tongue does. Nepidae (water scorpions) could be a cool lure too! They angle themselves in the water because they have a "butt straw" to breathe air with; it's actually called a siphon, but butt straw is kinda hilarious. They also have raptorial front legs like mantids do. They're pretty spindley guys, but if you could get them to have that angle in the water, that would be super interesting!
You're sort of the Bob Ross of lure making, I love it
This is very true.

Now I would like to see that. That is a good idea.
No no you need to put a little turbine on the line in front of it so it lights up when ever you reel the line or if it is in a current. lol
That would be really neat
This is the best channel honestly, just simple content, good quality, no clickbaits. Also your goofy moments make me laugh
no clickbaits, only crankbaits
Hes the best man. I would invite him to my wedding
Funny part is he reminds me of Jim and yet here you are.
I think a bait designed after a Beta fish would look pretty cool!
A beta fish lure with feathers or buck-hair for the fins would be fantastic
Your sense of humor...I’m a fan 😂
Make a really small lure and catch a fish on it and then make a lure that looks just like that fish you caught and catch a fish on that
So basically the food chain scheme
That's a great idea! I would love to see a one or two day build of that lure(s)
miles graham Mosquitofish lure would be a good start
You should mold it and make soft plastic version of it. It would be a perfect trailer for a chatter bait or jig👌
That’s dedication fishing in the snow for your viewers. Another great looking bait.

A shiny goldfish

Or one of the big bug-eye black goldfish or orange and black ones
