- Dame Ellen Terry was an 'A' List celebrity of the Victorian era. Her lavish productions drew huge audiences, her naturalistic style revolutionised stage performance and despite her unconventional personal life, she helped turn theatre from low class entertainment into a serious artform. Now 21st century star Joanna Lumley is honouring her legacy by becoming patron of The Barn Theatre, at Terry's former home, Smallhythe Place in Kent. The tiny theatre created by Terry's daughter Edith Craig has hosted performances by great actors from Sir John Gielgud and Dame Edith Evans to Paul Eddington and Diana Quick. You can find out more about the theatre or the house containing a fabulous collection of Ellen Terry's costumes, props and memorabilia at www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

A bit of greatness rubbing off on greatness.
We love Smallhythe Place and have recently made our 5th visit. We love Ellen Terry and Joanna Lumley, but were not aware that she is the Patron of the Barn Theatre. Good news.
