I don't believe in E.T.'s but it sure makes for a warm hearted story doesn't it. I remember. So funny how time goes by. When you're young, you think you will be young forever. Maybe we can stay that way inside.
I just lost my mommy on 1-10-18 to Pancreatic Cancer, I started crying uncontrollably when I heard this song. We attended Neil's concert together a few years ago.Cancer is just so merciless, she touched so many people in the community and was my best friend, I'm still trying to swallow all this, she's a beautiful Angel in Heaven now. Don't take your mother's for granted spend time with them.I have no regrets about my true relationship with my mother. Rip mommy no more pain, turn on your heart light
That was so beautiful thank you for that testimony God bless you beautiful soul.Look up and smile.shes an angel. We all shall met up with our loved ones again And it will be a revival
Thank God for Neil Diamond! This song gives everyone a a happy feeling and I could listen to this song forever. It’s that perfect. Blessings to everyone
Isn't it funny how as children we used to listen to our parents playing these albums how later in life we here them and reflect on them they remind us when we were children and I believe a better time I think sometimes our parents were cooler than we thought
I just heard this song today on a repeat of Casey Kasem, songs from 1982, and I IMMEDIATELY lost it, and thought of my brother who had passed away on September 12th, Covid-19 complications being one of the things wrong. He never went in with it, that part we never got any answers to, to what was really wrong from the beginning. Seeing my mom go through losing a son, and me losing a brother, is such a different kind of pain, and one in which we will never get over. David... Turn on your heartlight Let it shine wherever you go Let it make a happy glow For all the world to see We love and miss you David! ❤
Sorry for your loss. I saw the same with my mom when my brother passed in 1995. She was never the same. My mom just passed three weeks ago. Still grieving but now I know she's with my dad and brother. Love and miss them all.
This reminds me of the early 80s. Vibrant colors, he man, chips, dukes of hazzard, incredible hulk, space invaders, pac man, simpler times. And my best friend, my cat Skippy. Time goes by quick
Unbelievable song. Always reminds me of being a child and my mum listening to this while she tidied up. Old ways are the best. The world has lost its way in recent years.... things were more simple and better back then. Neil diamond you are a legend 👌🏻
My Dad used to sing me to sleep with this in the late 80's and I still feel shivvers. I miss the age of innocence and passion. Lets bring it back for our kids and those to come!
I worked at Culver studios as a security guard in 1981. A elderly man was there with many forms of the ET character. I was told to not talk about what I had seen. They called the movie at the time " A Boy's Life" The elderly man was nice to me. I would patrol the stage lot in the middle of the night and see all of the ET dolls. It was a hot set meaning nothing was to be disturbed. I actually burned a big joint while sitting on the sofa in the living room set of ET THE Movie. All this while making $4.75 per hour. Very great times in Los Angleles in 1981. So sad of what LA has became of many years later.
I was 18 yearls old when i came to America. I remember mon and das working hard for me. It was a different system for us in America. Lonliness was part of it and still i am on it. This is a great golden singer and a golden song.
Turn on your heartlight...in the middle of a young boy's dream...something in that part, where the song shifts, is awesome to me. Only Neil Diamond's voice can fit that.
This song reminds me of my son growing up. He was a very lonely kid, though very smart and a little arkward. He loved the movie ET and in many ways could identify with It because he too was very misunderstood. He graduated summa cum laude in Business Admin and Accounting. He is very well rounded and successful. We are so proud of him!
It (the song ) was released before ET right ? I always wanted there to be an sequel (besides the Super Bowl ) commercial for ET but I'm glad there wasn't.
This is my most "favorite song" of all time!!! I heard many songs of Neil's, and I ask my mom who she was listening too? She said: Neil Diamond. It was this song🎵 that came up!!! I had my dad take me to the cd place, i bought 2 cds, my dad let me have them. I asked my dad? Do you like Neil Diamond? He said yes! You're mom and I loved him. I was only 16, but I fell in love with him and that song.😊❤🎉
I remember this song playing on the radio in the mid 80s when we went on long trips. I always liked it. I remember it most at night when we were either coming home or checking into a hotel. It seemed to calm everyone down.
A golden singer for all times. It remembers my father when I came to America at the age of 17 years old. Dad took me into a carsl Jr restaurant for being a good son and an A student all the time. We saw the movie ET home. Today I cry when hear this beautiful song and dad with Mon ate in heaven now.
... 'and home is the most excellent place of all'... if that doesn't touch the light in your heart then MY heart goes out to you... and I wish that you find it.
One of the least songs of Neil Diamond, BUT it was my dad's favourite ❤ He would say to my brother and me: "Turn on your heartlight, let it shine where ever you go, make it a happy glow, for all the world to see" ~ And till this day, this is my and my brother's motto in life ❤
My Mother was A Big Neal Diamond Fan from when his Career started, So When this song came out I Taped it and Let her hear it She Loved E.T. So she was So Happy Double Delight!!❤
Always reminded me of my father coming back home from Germany. He was in the Army that's where he met my mother in the army in Germany. I'm hurt and totally sad at the death of Michael Dix Sr. He was my father, I was his junior. I can't hold back the tears of sadness. This is profound sadness for me. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 the man I looked up to and adored wholeheartedly is now gone. I don't have a father figure anymore 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭. My heart weeps every day for my father.
Reminds me of the innocence of my childhood, watching E.T., getting a cabbage patch doll for Christmas, my dog Sparky, living in our 2 bedroom trailer house, my father working at Tom's candies... 😭💖
The farther away from home, the more we miss it. Came to love this song while working in boston for 4 years back on 87-91. Long way from central mexico for a young peasant mexican boy. One of the top songs that was out around November 13, 1982. I saw Neil Diamond on May 15, 1987, at The Scope in Norfolk, VA. He ended his show with this hit.
I was there at that concert in Norfolk.... I was living at this really small town called Front Royal n I was really young then just a kid...but still loved ND music. Had my dad buy me tickets n me n my friend went to go see him...1 of the best concert I ever attended.
I love this song and I always will. I relate so much to this song. Thanks Neil Diamond for such a very positive and wonderful song. This song will stay with me forever.
They simply don't make singer songwriters like this anymore.
Robert Frost - Nothing Gold Can Stay. Enjoy the moment...! They don't make alot of things like they use to 80s the best/golden decade.
40 years later, “E. T. The Extra Terrestrial” STILLS makes me cry, and so does this beautiful song.
“E.T. phone home.”
Feel better now Brad? 😑

I feel for you Butterfly. As I lost my dear mum suddenly due to cancer nearly 4 years ago. I still feel the pain to this day.
Hopefully a cure for pancreatic cancer will be found. Sorry for your loss.

Blessings to you too!!
Isn't it funny how as children we used to listen to our parents playing these albums how later in life we here them and reflect on them they remind us when we were children and I believe a better time I think sometimes our parents were cooler than we thought
They were way cooler and wore cooler clothes and just had a better perspective on everything.

Something from the '80s remind you of the '80s 🤔
that's really weird.
Simple times. The memories
I wanna go back . This era is full of psychos , hatred and massive govt corruption destroying the world . Way better then .
This forty year old song serves as a hallmark of Neil Diamond's legendary status!

Omg so sweet! What a nice memory I just posted how this song reminded me of my innocent time as a child....
Gosh, that's a lovely thing to write. Thank you for sharing that.
I'm on board
There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
I couldn't have said it better. You wrote EXACTLY how this song makes me feel.

I may hv lost family, friends, but this song gives me a hug and tells me its ok..this is how life is..just dnt loose ur self ❤
Great comment! So true…

This is one of Neil Diamond's best songs!
I think that all of his songs are his best songs.

This song blows.

this is my most favorite song of Neil Diamond. :-)
Why?
@@julieherms could be many reasons. I think it would be more of a favorite if not associated with a kids movie

My moms gone too, and she loved him. Introduced me to him through old 8-tracks of Jonathan when I was very little. And I love him now :)

When this song debuted, I didn't really appreciate it. Now, I listen to it and it often moves me to tears. So many memories.
