The $80 Lenovo Thinkpad T410s - A Good Laptop That I Wouldn’t Buy

  • Today we are jumping back to the T410s to do a full review on it. I Picked up this laptop for $60 plus $17 shipping and $3 tax. The specs are as follows:
    Intel I5 M560 @ 2.7GHz
    Nvidia NVS 3100M
    1440x900 screen
    120GB 1.8” Toshiba SSD
    4GB DDR3
Though this is a great used laptop, for a similar price you can get a Thinkpad T410 which has more USB ports and better thermals. You might even be able to find a T420 for a similar price which is significantly more powerful than the T410 and T410s. If you really need something light, then I would recommend looking at a X1 carbon instead.

Someone pointed out that I forgot to mention the shared e-sata / USB port. So technically it has 2 dedicated USB ports + 1 shared! I'll still take the base T410 or T420 though ;)

Agreed, completely. The S-variants of the T-series are more expensive, less upgradeable, and harder to repair than the non-S versions, without offering much in the way of size or weight reduction.

These days I'd say that if you need the portability, get a modern ultrabook, and if it's going to be at a desk all the time, a normal non S version is fine.

What’s strange is Lenovo retained or introduced some premium features on the -s models that the regular T series version didn’t have. Retaining the UltraBay battery is a notable example, they often have better quality materials used in the chassis compared to a full sized T series. The T420s had USB 3.0, the i7 iGPU T430s had Thunderbolt, the T440s had an *extra* USB port compared to the regular T440, and the T460s had NVMe SSDs, DDR4 RAM, and support for 1440p displays. With the T490s and T14s moving to all-soldered RAM and sharing its motherboard with the X390/X13, it really feels like there’s little place for it anymore unless people just want a cheaper version of the X1 Carbon.

My first thinkpad was a t410s but yeah.... The weird drive and the rather lacking battery (not to mention the lack of good third party batteries) makes no sense to not get a t410 or t420. Also I can confirm that I had a lazily slapped on thermal pad on the underside of the keyboard too.

I bought one last year off of ebay for 55€ plus 5 € shipping. DIdn´t really put much thought into it, faintly remembered that the T410 and T420 where the good ones to look out for and just bought it (should have seen this vid before, lol). The seller probably realized he sold it too cheap as he tried to renegotiate but I refused.
It came with a crappy battery that doesn´t even work for an hour, a 256 GB SSD that the previous seller already had put in and Windows 10. It works pretty well for the regular office tasks one might do, sometimes it freezes for a sec but other than that it was a steal. I mostly use it at work and only a bit at home.
Sadly my 3d printer software and the CAD program wouldn´t work because of some extension missing within the graphic card drivers.
Your tip with the media bay battery is amazing though. I was looking to buy a regular replacement battery, but now Imma be looking out for a media bay one. I never used the cd-drive until now, thanks!

I just bought a mint T61, and one made well after the GPU issue was fixed. And now I'm after either an i5 or i7 powered machine. I'm leaning toward the T420 because of the classic keyboard. I know you can install a classic keyboard in a T430, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.

I have a few T410, a few T420, and a few T430. I do not know where the T440s or T450s went, if we even purchased any (that was way before my time). From my experience with these 3 models, they are not worth anything if you have the base config with the HDD. If you max out the RAM and put in an SSD and swap out the optical bay for the 2nd storage drive, it can make a fine beater laptop. I would not recommend them for doing anything or getting work done. If you are looking to buy a laptop, get something newer. Even if you are getting a laptop for a kid rough on technology, and you want Windows, get something else.

rather use my X301 with ultrabay battery (9h batterylife!!). SU9600 C2D CPU with FSB-Mod @2,4GHz - like a T400s. keeps cool n quiet, very light compact and best quality. also PVA/AFFS mod available. paid 50 bucks with 6GB RAM and that 1,8“ 64GB SSD
the screen on t410s is very good though I got the 300nits screen. also matte touch available. don‘t know how good the touch is. But I just put the T410s screen onto my T400/T61 Frankenpad ^^ Best hpe is putting the new XC9 16:10 screen onto my T420 though.
Also I love the magnesium bottom case of the classic s-suffix Thinkpads and my T410s comes with a flat surface touchpad, much better. it is different to a t420 nobbed touchpad even after having removed the touchpad sticker from t420.

In the unlikely event you can find one reasonably priced, I'd love to see your thoughts on the Dell Precision M6700. Don't let the name Dell fool you, this laptop has every feature that you and I praise ThinkPads for, the build quality is exceptional, upgradability is unparalleled, and overall it's just a really nice machine. I got mine back in either 2017 or 2018 as an i5 base model and have since maxed it out and it's an incredible performer even today, hell it even tanks its way through most games with ease. Even if you can't find one terribly well priced, if you can get one at all I can almost gaurentee that you'll consider it as daily driver material - it's honestly THAT good.

      @RanenPo 3 роки тому

@@raymondgradzewicz I can speak to that. On Linux, just about any trackpad (synaptics, Alps, Chinese knockoffs) will have both a functioning trackpad and trackpoint. On Windows, both synaptics and Alps have drivers that will work, the difference being Synaptics will have a working trackpad and trackpoint, whereas Alps will only have a working trackpoint (and buttons), trackpad will not work.

@@PsycosisIncarnated power draw on an i7-4700mq will be roughly similar to your i5-4200m, so on your existing battery you should get roughly the same battery life. Thermals are a non-issue if you repaste it properly and clear out dust from your fans, the i7-4700mq in my laptop idles at around 45 degrees and spikes to around 60-70 degrees on load. On a fresh 9-cell your battery life will probably be around 5-6 hours

@@RanenPo wouldn't i5 last longer on the nine cell? I'm starting to think that the i7 is total overkill.
Also I can tell t440p gets hot on the docking station due to the horrible design Lenovo did. It hides the fans and shit.
Also I think 60-70 under load is actually pretty high... But I'll give it a test and see what it is that I prefer. I might end up enjoying it at the end.

I know the 40 series gets a bad rep within the ThinkPad community but it is so good, so inexpensive, and so powerful, it smashes the X1 Carbon that I had for 5 months to pieces. Bottom line, I would recommend the T440S to anyone looking for a sub $200 pc laptop or MacBook Pro.

The reason I wouldn't go for a T420 is because it's in 16:9 which frankly sucks. The T410 is the best option so far, though there are recent laptops that come in 16:10 and even 3:2 if one can afford them. But the other great thing with the T410 is the easily removable battery which you can get very cheaply and which isn't whitelisted. And the keyboard is just great, of course. I find the thinner size of the T410s quite impressive though, looks rather modern.
