I just saw the Japanese skaters skating at the 2022 Olympics and I was stunned to hear Shawn Phillips!! So many memories of the 70's. I saw him in Chicago and again in Phoenix. What an amazing musician!! I have missed him and his music!!
I was also stunned to hear this song and had to call my son immediately. I was introduced to his music while I was in college by my sister who just recently passed away and it brings tears to my eyes because she is the one I wanted to call. He came to Minot State University in Minot ND to play at a homecoming concert. I don't remember the exact date. I was so thrilled because I had listened to his music several times. I have two of his albums. Hadn't listened to them in awhile but am listening now.
I worked on audio equipment for a living back in the 70 and for the next 50 years. One day "Woman" came on the radio and it hit me like a brick. I had to find out who this guy was. That was the beginning of the fascination with Shawn Phillips music. I have listened to everyone and have mixed sound for some of the greats. He keeps me occupied still 50 plus years later. I met him and he was a gentleman. Thanks, Mr. Phillips
Yes, mine started as yours one song was Woman as well. But then I ran out as we did in the past 70s and got the 8 tracks and the Album's. met him in Arlington, Tx. Enjoy. I have it set in Utube ready all the time
I fell in love w/his music in the 1970's. I've been fortunate to have seen him play 2x. The Japanese pair skaters just now skated to 'Woman' & are in 1st place.
I was able to walk up and shake his hand telling him how much of an impression he made on me... started in early 70’s thinking he had greatest vocal range I ever heard.
This was the love of my life favourite song. She past away 15 years ago today the 12 of march would be her 65 th birthday. Still the love of my life today and forever
There has never been a decade with better musicians & performers like the 70s. This degree of talent, if it exists today, is certainly been kept from the music industry. They would make hip-hoppers look bad ! Go Shawn, still love you ! From Montreal !
In retrospect this is what I most miss about the 60's and 70's. You really didn't have to look for great music like this. All you had to do was turn on the freakin' radio. Yep. Believe it or not this used to get airplay.
Huge early fan of Shawn Phillips from the beginning of my teens. Older brother hooked me up and I became hooked. have five of his albums and still am struck by his phraseology and music
I haven't listened to this for 30 years! So brings me back to my young, sweet, innocent girl years waiting for my knight in shining armor! Well....my knight finally rescued me. I named my grandson after Shawn!!!!!!!
How could you go thirty years without? I don't think I've ever gone more than thirty days without playing it at least once in the last, nearly, 44 years.
Never in my life would I have thoguht I'd get this blast from the past (40 years later) while watching the figure skating worlds live in Montreal just now ☺ I had completely forgotten this vinyl-era ballad, but every single word and note and cadence and vibrato were instantly familiar. Wow
Listening to this fantastic music after watching the figure skating competition during the Olympics in Beijing 2022. I had no idea that these songs are already 52 years old 😱😱😱 Never heard of Shawn Philips before 👏👏👏
I was blown away when I heard that music in an Olympic program… I’ve been a Shawn fan since the early 70’s . His concerts were great .. even if you weren’t smoking you went home hi .😂😂
This song has resonated with me since I first heard it as a young woman in 1978. It still does to this day. I cannot listen to it without being profoundly touched. I don’t imagine that are many songs that can do that a person after 43 years. My favourite line ? “A girl child of such loveliness …” I look at my beautiful granddaughter and think that I’ve finally understood the deepest meaning of those simple words.
I never waited for a song like that, I've known this song for 30 years Music and I know Shawn Philippe, he's one of the best singers in the world 😎❤️💖💖
Diane I understand what you mean … I feel like that whenever I listen to “Woman”. It never ceases to amaze me how profound it is. And how overwhelmingly beautiful it is.
jmack619 Damn! Got excited for a second, until I realized your post was a year old. :-( From what I've heard, Shawn Phillips had a special relationship with Montreal. I think he was extremely popular here. I know a lot of people who had this album, myself included. I even got the CD years later. Unfortunately, I lost all my best CDs when I moved back to Montreal in 2000. They were all in the same box and the box got stolen by one of my former friends who helped pack the truck. Of course, also in the box were all the CDs that covered all my most favourite vinyls.
François Landry Ah, j'ai connait pas ca! Peut-etre c'est la raison qu'il a chante beaucoups de fois a Montreal quands j'etait jeune, eh? lol (desolles, mon francais et pas tres biens and je ne sait pas comment faire les accents)
23 yrs ago, tonight, lost my beloved mother to brain cancer and we saw him in houston that year, this was our "LAST" concert together, she turned me on to Shawn when i was a young girl, so tonight i came to hear one of her fav songs from him and to celebrate her life and her excellent taste in music, thank you Shawn for your beautiful music
It’s not just his incredibly talented, writing, and arranging of such great music, and it’s not just the lyrics that make you feel like you’re floating within the ethereal sphere in so many ways. It’s the way he transcends experiences from within his mind and heart to our souls. I’ve been lucky enough to become friends with Shawn over the years and it’s my greatest accomplishment to this date. Thank you, Shawn.
Listening again for the first time in years, I remember why I used to wear this particular vinyl out when I bought it in 1976. The guy is a genius. This music just flows, and it takes you places. That I am able to rattle off 90% of the lyrics after all these years speaks way more to the power of those lyrics than my memory, which struggles to remember the name of my cat. Such good music
Nothing to beat this legend. Met him in Cape Town many moons ago. And do you know what? He personalised my Second Contribution vinyl album cover. It is a treasure indeed.
I saw him in the 70s in an outside show. It was cloudy and rain was in the forecast but not a drop hit the audience and there was even a bit of clear skies behind the scene where we could see the full moon... Magic!
I got the vinyl in 1970, listened throughout college and beyond. After multiple moves vinyl eventually wound up in storage. The second this started playing for skaters I jumped up and yelled "Shawn". Everyone thought I was nuts. Even after decades of not hearing it, the drama of this song brings an immediate visceral memory. Brilliant!
Yes indeed. My brother gifted his album "Shawn" to me in 1970 along with another of Tom Rush. Shawn Phillips music and voice has been at the top of music all these years.🤗🤗
Swann Phillips came performing in some small towns in province of Quebec and I discovered this album in the 70s. Many teenagers has this Album. Second Contribution. I have bunch of memories when I hear his voice and his wonderful songs. If memory serves me right he used to be a firefighter somewhere in Texas. A huge talent!!!!
Great. Thanks for posting this. I LOVED this album back in the day. Actually I only listened to this "side" of the album usually. Always liked, "It's hard to fall out of love completely. It's harder to come back discretely," and "a woman of the land..." The whole side of the album flowed so well. Always wondered why this didn't get wider recognition. Good to see it's still alive 30 years later.
How can I explain what a profound influence this poet has had on my life. His voice and his music have echoed through this unique journey and lifted my heart and soul when the world seemed so contrary to all that I believed. Thank you Shawn from a teenager from Calgary who saw you in Edmonton in 72 and who still believes "it's our turn now to keep the new direction".

Guess I'M BLESSED !!!!
@Sandy M I got to go meet him on his bus about 1976ish. I remember feeling like a school kid. I have worked for and on the equipment of many performers. His vocal range and variety is still my fav.
I heard him for the first time in 1972 ... at A friends house and it was a memorable exp... Second Contribution... his vocal range and texture was a catalyst for my interest in getting into music as a performer. Thank you Shawn...
Still one of the best albums I own... Just love this. I saw him in 3 live performances, once even helped him pack up his kit after a gig. He is a wonderful artist, with a heart for music.
I first heard this album at my buddy Tom's apartment near the ASU campus back in 1973 . every time that i've played it for someone who hasn't heard it before, they are always blown away . simply a masterpiece.
I have seen Shawn Phillips many times. Several times at the Mucky Duck in Houston, once at private concert outside Austin, where he sat on the back of a flatbed eighteen wheeler. He is as kind as his voice. I still listen to him daily, brings me peace. Many many favorite songs, too many to mention. Love Woman, Most of us dont understand at all, Song for Mr. C. Thank you Shawn for the memories and knowing you are still filling the world with your Wonder.
I heard this voice...the music supporting an amazing vocal range...born of a father who was a scholar and linguist...his background and upbringing paved the foundation for who he became... a poet...a vocal presence lifting others to a new , higher plan of existence...I saw him live in Minneapolis...love this mans message...many blessings to Shawn...
Back in the 70's met Shawn with mutual friends. The man is amazing! My daughter wrote and spoke to Shawn 18 years later and he was the gentleman he always was. She wrote a college paper on him. A true human being.
Socially critical and so necessary about 49/50 years ago when I was first "converted". Still feel like a new convert now, with his music and message even more socially critical and pertinent today...a true awakener and prescient genius. Was blessed with seeing this man live 4 times...tho not had a chance in the last 40 years...I dearly hope to once again. He has been a true gift for humanity and the planet.
One of the best of all times, vocal range is absolutely amazing... Been my favorite since the first time I heard him in the early 70’s. Meant him in the 90’s, I told him how much he influenced my sphere, he shook my hand...smile Think he helped keep me sane, until now... Life is a performance, or as it is best known, a cabaret my friends.
I am also 50 now and can say much the same. VERY excited to be seeing Shawn in person this coming Sunday (19 Auugust) at a tiny little country venue in the Hartebeespoort area in South Africa. He is truly one of a kind
50 years gone by and I yet remember every lyric as if it were 1971. That's saying alot since I don't remember much of my yesterday! Thank you for the great memories.
This is the way to do it!!!!!! Saw him in Santonio Tex in Mar '72--a mind blower!!!!An 'ol Texas Boy....---"If you got something to tell on me it better be good."
I used to listen to Sean all the time back in the '70's, then went to cassetts, CDs, etc. and lost him. I recent;y re-discovered him on the internet and am a huge fan!! What a range he has.
When I was eight or nine I used to put this and collaboration on every evening and listen to them start to finish. Loved every second. Big difference from kids at that age today staring at SpongeBob. What garbage we now feed our children.
Here it is November sixth and I'm glad somebody commented because now I'm lying here listening to Shawn Philips and the better part of side one of Second Contribution.
shawn phillips was one of my very favorite artists in the 70s and back then, I heard he died in a boating accident. Recently, I discovered he is alive. I have his music on vinyl.
I've seen the man live a couple weeks ago. The years have not been kind to his voice and range, but his guitar playing skills, and his whole setup was incredibly impressive. An extremely talented musician who acts as a 1 man band live, possessing a true mastery of his craft.
I have loved your amazing music for years. I was introduced to you by an old love Robert W. I have such wonderful memories when I hear your voice. I am forever grateful to you & your hauntingly beautiful voice & music. Thank you Mr Phillips for adding another layer of richness to my life. Fond regards, CM
Thanks lo these many years later! Driving from Chicago to Quebec next month to see him again. He’s 75 now, and this album remains my all time favorite after 48 years!
Not many I am afraid....he plays Buffalo, NY on the 3rd of Oct - but I will be away in Japan...sad. Phillips.com does not give any concert details. Looks like I lost it this time. Thank you very much, Greg! :)
my intro to phillips and still one of the best of the 70 ' s or any other decade. the local fx station had one dj who would play the entire album( must have took a "smoke" break ). lay in the dark, absolutely still and drift off to another plain.
brings back such great memories....and thanks to my mom, who introduced me to him when i was abt 10...have loved his music since first time...mom and i got to see him in houston,tx, 1996, was the last concert she and i saw together....

It was at the Minot auditorium in Minot, North Dakota.

The Japanese figure skating pair just skated to Shawn’s “Woman”. In 2022!!! Brought back a lot of 70’s memories!
Also 3 days ago they skated this program in Montreal at Worlds and won the silver medal ❤
Astonishing performance!

Great memories listening to Cat Stevens Tea For the Tillerman. and Shawn Phillips, Woman. the70s & 80s for me growing up.

One of the most brilliant musicians, songwriters, ever. To this day I don't know why he isn't as big as Elton John, Stevie Nicks ,Beyonce, etc.....
i rate Shawn in the same category as Bob Dylan , Neil Young , Rodríguez .... all story tellers!!!
What a marvellous artist - not well known but deserves a lot more recognition
Love this song, a number one. Saw hims perform it at the Armadillo World Headquarters when I was a student in Austin. What a showman!
From Canada, j'écoutais Shawn il y a un demi-siècle, en vérité nous étions mon frère , mes copains à savourer ses chansons ! ❤
Thank you for the great memories.
i still have this on original vinyl. amazing. the pops and crackles

Born in 73. Lucky to do the same with Pink Floyd's Animals at 8/9 too.
Thank you for posting this! A generation+ before me & am only now discovering his amazing music. Peace~
Lovely to hear this again. I have it on vinyl also - always thought that was a fantastic front & back cover pics on the album.
je n ai pas oublier les paroles ...maudit que c est bon pour le moral merci xx
Here it is November sixth and I'm glad somebody commented because now I'm lying here listening to Shawn Philips and the better part of side one of Second Contribution.
Shawn, the South Shore of Montreal was mesmerized by this album and, your whole catalog of work. Thank you. You are still a hero in our minds.Peace.
What a flashback! One of my roommates had this album in the early 70s and I loved it. I stumbled onto this video by accident and I'm sure glad I did!
shawn phillips was one of my very favorite artists in the 70s and back then, I heard he died in a boating accident. Recently, I discovered he is alive. I have his music on vinyl.
I've seen the man live a couple weeks ago. The years have not been kind to his voice and range, but his guitar playing skills, and his whole setup was incredibly impressive. An extremely talented musician who acts as a 1 man band live, possessing a true mastery of his craft.
upon your analysis that is all one can expect and your assessment is spot on!
He still plays live??? OMG if I only knew I would travel to Quebec, too.....

Yep, check Shawn Phillips.com for tour info.
Not sure how many more chances we’ll get.
Not many I am afraid....he plays Buffalo, NY on the 3rd of Oct - but I will be away in Japan...sad. Phillips.com does not give any concert details. Looks like I lost it this time. Thank you very much, Greg! :)
Wow he's 75!!! Time flies. We are all old but always carry the youth of the music in 70's.
He played at my high school in the auditorium, it was either 1972 or 1973. He was awesome. Richfield, Minnesota.
Absolutely love this - brings back some precious memories of a carefree and youthful time in life when all things were possible. Thanks.
Beautiful Ballad... Speaks to everyone, and in all ways...
Very fortunate to have seen Shawn in concert twice in my lifetime....amazing!
lucky
Same here just wish it would have been 100 times
As a teen and in my second forty still tip my hat off to you , my girlfriend loved you as well, as a song writer and a sound engineer ❤💙♥...ty ❤
my intro to phillips and still one of the best of the 70 ' s or any other decade. the local fx station had one dj who would play the entire album( must have took a "smoke" break ). lay in the dark, absolutely still and drift off to another plain.
brings back such great memories....and thanks to my mom, who introduced me to him when i was abt 10...have loved his music since first time...mom and i got to see him in houston,tx, 1996, was the last concert she and i saw together....
