People are talking about the mix but I just got to say I greatly prefer this cover art to the newer version. Maybe its because this is how I first fell in love with Dopesmoker. This art looks like mythological religious iconography compared to the cartoonish style of the new one.
For the folks who say this is all the 'same riff', I understand how it can sound that way. But in fact, this is a highly developed, incredibly subtle and varied compositional masterpiece that for me ranks with any extended-form music ever made.
I can confirm this, trying to learn this song by ear is a bit tricky. It's easy enough for the first few minutes (literally just do the same riff with a slight variation on each second time for a few minutes) but after that the changes come many and plenty.
It does at points in the album, but you are rite. If you go ahead 5 min or so, you will notice changes in key, tempo and riff. It just sounds the same in places because with doom the tone never changes, or tuning. This is kind of a concept thing, that's why it sounds like the song never stops but it does. You have to have the rite ears to hear, like you have to have the rite eyes to see ....see and hear And feel, you must be part of our circle to understand. Or you will never know.
many moons did pass, though that sacred Iommian resonance doth not succumb to the Fades of Time; entombed well within the anechoic aural sanctum of the collective unconscious known only to those select ones- the highest amongst those supremely devoute, did a Riffian triumvirate make the proper sacrifices to answer the calling. In so doing managed to revivify that most exalted Gift of Gifts, as was first given through Black Sabbath. this new covenant borne out of untrammeled vacuum tube driven rhythm, this highest form non-verbal concept articulation, Hasheeshian hymn to transcend the limitations of space and time.
u know this is true stoner metal it changes contently because you forget constantly, its an hour long because u forgot to cut the recorder off, its groovy and shaky ash but vibrates your soul, and that's a true type of musical expression in my opinion
I’m lucky enough to live in a house where I can absolutely blast this and feel the bass. Really was a joy when I listened to it in its entirety when doing chores.
Yes my friend. It took them 4 years to write this song and it was the only one of its kind at the time it was released. Since then some bands have made 1-hour songs. like Bongripper and Boris, but Sleep was the first, and the best!
@@TheJimmys11 I also enjoy Bell Witch's Mirror Reaper. A masterpiece in it's own right, but hats off to Sleep for giving us the original doom metal album-length song.
The riff forms a constant sonic background that any drug song would need ( trance , psychedelic rock are the same ) , there are a lot of layers which change frequently but the riff changes slower than that . This heavy bassy eerie sound which is constant both pulls in the listener and makes a constant vibe for him . Classic dope music , for those who don’t understand the musical principles of anything stoner ( and it’s laws are slightly different from traditional music , mimicking the state of mind and spirit on doping )
I love this song. I'm on Shrooms. Possibly too much shroomage?...I don't know shit about tea...but bongs I know very very well. Imma rip one. I'll let you know tomorrow if that was a good idea. Takin off to the center of the universe!
This is matt Pike from High on Fire, he can definitely play, as we know 100%...here he just goes full on drawn out stoner...love it...could be background music to an entire awesome day.......
This is the original version the guys were recording. It's the version that the studio decided to cut into parts and release as Jerusalem, then this got re-released in 2003 in its original form with the cover shown above.
If you like this, try: Bongripper - Satan Worshipping Doom Omega Massif - Im Karst Acid King - III Black Pyramid - Black Pyramid Kylesa - Static Tensions
Nate Garcia The same reaction London Records had when they were presented this result by the recordings of Sleep. And they refused to release it. Twice. -.-
Yannick Messias Back when I made that comment, 10 months ago, I thought they were the same thing, but yeah, I agree that there's a difference. Though some people use the terms Stoner/Doom, Stoner Metal, and Stoner Rock interchangeably, which is confusing.
if you think it's the same riff, you obviously didn't listen to all of it. bet you didn't even hear vocals. besides, traditional song structure restricts some emotions way more than others, this shit should make you feel something
MastaTOHO Yeah, I've listened to it a few times now and although I enjoy it more and I have more respect for the song, I still think its roughly the same basic riff throughout the song with small variation here and there. I like sleeps other stuff more.
t1oxETy i like their other stuff more too, i actually made a whole world based on sleep's holy mountain for a dnd campaign i'm running. this album fits perfectly in the soundtrack!
i know it's a 5-year-old comment, but I have to point out that they used C standard tuning, which is 2 steps down from the standard E tuning. Now I can sleep at night. Thank you.
this song is so stoner it makes me trip while sober
literally things are moving rn

The riff is constantly changing the whole song. It drones heavy on the root, butt that’s why we paid the cover charge

@@wilsterwonkels7384 lots if you skip ahead every 6, 7 min or so, the changes will be obvious.
This is by far the best mix of ''Dopesmoker'', the original Billy Anderson one. Has much more weight and bass than the recent remaster or Jerusalem.
Don't like this mix cause sometimes the bass is way to forward and sometimes on top of the guitar. Not my fav, tbh
@@GREENWARRI0R I like it that way
@@GREENWARRI0R when the bassist leads the band
@@GREENWARRI0R thats how its supposed to be in the Sabbath style, I'm not sure why Al would go against this tho.

I was putting a "stoner metal" album together... But I'll just listen to this for the rest of eternity....8
Definitely a life long album, return for a good listen at least once a year!
it's that time of year again

Track 1: Dopesmoker.
Divide the album by 12, you get a pretty good breakdown of the song
is this drone!!
No, Sunn O))) is drone, Sleep is stoner
No, this is stoner metal, also known as stoner doom
+TheJimmys11 This is Stoner/Doom, Stoner Metal is different. Compare Sleep or Electric Wizard to Red Fang or Orange Goblin, it's not the same at all.

stoner metal is sludgy slow metal you would play while stoned its not supposed to be trippy, that would fall under like psychedelic rock
i first heard this song on acid the fuzz does weird things to your mind
This is weed music, and I believe that what you were looking for was LSD music.
Hey bro. This is stoner rock. Not acid rock.
