This is a very clever way to show how laminar flow hoods work. It was very helpful to me, since I'm a visual learner. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the way you visually depicted the flow. Quite ingenious really. I've been having trouble understanding the flow given the diagrams in my notes, but now I'm 100% sure to never forget the direction of the flow! You're a star.

Very good video and a great way to test directional airflow.
The only one little problem is that according to NSF49 those biological safety cabinets are named as Class II A2. Other denomination like A/B3 is very old and should not be used any more.
(Si tuvieran una versión con subtítulos en español estaría fantástico)

@Edkarr1 - I agree with you that the old definition of A/B3 should not be used anymore. Thanks for pointing that out to everyone else. Best.

@gmkim21 Actually, I couldn't get my hands on a smoke generator and was once attempting to demonstrate how this cabinet works to primary school children using talcum powder. Very messy. My 9 yo daughter brilliantly suggested I use the previous dry ice demonstration to this matter... I've a PhD, she's in 3rd grade.

Your daughter is very clever as this worked really well and made it super easy to follow the flow of air. thanks for sharing.

Disengagement from the aura of a PhD and back to curiosity, wonderment and thought patterns of the yet “to be indoctrinated” will actually increase your ability to step out of the box and solve problems, find solutions and be far more creative. I guarantee it.
If you want more input from me, a builder, not a “college grad”, just reply. I’ve always kept my “child like observation and curiosity”. It serves me well in my construction of these Labs and many other projects, plus you could by “testers ‘canned smoke’”. Used for testing fire smoke dampers in FLS.

Dry ice-generated CO2 always goes down, because it is heavier than air. Other than that, good demonstration.

Is there a numerical value that needs to registered( recorded) along side a visual being recorded?
What type of forms are filled out for field verification?

So, biological safety cabinet verification is something normally carried out by either a national or state certified authority or by a manufacturer. This video only demonstrates the air flow and is not intended to ensure or guarantee proper performance. This has to involve both laminar flow anemometry (flow metering) as well as measurements of particle retention by size. Yes, there are specific parameters which must be achieved for specific biological cabinet (class 1, 2 and 3, types A1, A2, B1 and B2) certification.

You are suppose to take everything out the hood to demonstrate more clearly..lol thats just the certify in me talking. but yes Chalk, PAO Generator, back in the day they Used and Lite Cigarettes no joke. Also If you Dont Have a Real Even Split and It Pulls More From 1 side. which your hood is. your Exhaust is pulling slightly more than your Downflow. or you inflow is slightly more. which is find and safe. But to much Inflow Can Create Sterile problems.

Nice visual on flow, poor technique (exposed skin)

Cabinets had just been commissioned and decontaminated, would not otherwise dare access their insides without robe and gloves. Nor would we move things in and out in the way we did during the demonstration, breaching the front air lamina would hinder the cabinet useless. Thank you for making the point.
