John Lennon was asked during the Beatles' first visit to America: ''What's the first thing you're gonna do the moment you have some free time?'' Lennon replied: ''I'd love to see Muddy Waters'', upon which the reporter asked ''Where's that?''.... haha. What a scenario, a british guy needs to explain to someone in the U.S. who Muddy Waters is. Thankfully, things have changed, by now friend and foe agree upon the genius of this blues master.
I saw Muddy live in a club back in the early '70s with his band. Today all these years later, I realize how lucky I was and what a privilege. I got a table close to the stage, right in line with Muddy. He totally amazed me with his raw power and energy. He played his red Telecaster very loud and it was fantastic. Add to that his incredible voice. Anyone who saw him live will agree that records don't capture the man like his live performances. I've never seen anyone like him before or since, and I never will again. He was a living piece of history and the word "legend" is an understatement. I was truly in awe of him and I still am to this day.
I saw Muddy Waters play a small club in Charlottesville, Virginia in the late 1970s. He was in his middle 60s, but when he sang Mannish Boy he could’ve had any woman he wanted in that place. His voice was really big, but somehow his stage presence was simply HUGE. I’ve never seen anyone engage an audience the way he did.
Great video Thom! Those old Blues guys were the best. Pure inborn musical talent and knowhow! You should look into doing a video on "Magic Slim" as well. Anyway, hope that you & your little one are doing well. 👍👍😉😉
Muddy Waters..priceless..and you my friend have a great talent for disecting songs and showing them to us..That 9th chord was used a lot back in the 5o's soul music..a neat chord for sure...thanks bro....
My friend , Brian Bissessi [ spelling ? } played with Muddy at the White House when Carter was president . He had a picture of Muddy and the band there . Muddy had a plaid suit on . Brian had a whole lot of GREAT stories about his time with Muddy .
Great video Thom. That Les Paul Studio sounds really fine. I've met Bob Margolin several times here in Seville. He played in Muddy's band for many years and is a great source of anecdotes about the great man 😃
@@imannonymous7707 He's a regular visitor to Seville. He played a gig and did a masterclass a few years ago and turned up with a blackguard Tele that was probably older than me (and I'm no spring chicken!). The last time he played here he was playing a B&G guitar which sounded amazing. He's a true legend and a really nice guy to boot. I treasure my signed copy of his 2012 album "Blues Around The World".
Hi Thom, great analysis and performance. I think I am gonna dig deeper in this song and the Muddy Waters thing trying to record it. What about an analysis of Rorry Gallagher stuff? Perhaps from his legendary Irish Tour? I am now sitting on his "A million miles away" working on it recognizing that his legendary phrasing is quite difficult. Greetings to Ireland, his homeland.
After playing this song for years I never realized she wrote this I remember hearing her when I was a kidCheck out the seed group Podcast listen to my CD Sir thank Subscribers
@Guitar Pilgrim Now you need to teach us Muddy's 'Cross eyed cat - H_Vpv0dKAQ0). Not only does the song have an infectious aggressive groove, but he is also singing about a cat! 🤣🤣
oooh my god, i never saw muddy waters young, i never knew how good he was at dancing, now im tring to learn this god dam song its hard but i have to have it, because this mojo song ios the story of my life, it just dont work on her
@@hijmestoffels5171 You're right. There's a D. So it's a D(#11add9). Says my chord analyzer app. It's a sub of E9, when adding E. But Thom doesn't plays the E. I' m not sure ' cos I'm also not expert in those things.
Good instructional content. Not overly happy that you called the original which is a great jump blues doo woo and “nothing to do with the blues” for some reason.
I once owned a black car. Every scratch, every paint swirl, every fingerprint always showed. Is it the same with your Les Paul? Are you constantly polishing it?
Merci beaucoup for this. Copyright infringement? Uh oh. John Wayne wrote the original Pilgrim. But he didn't play the guitar. He played the six-shooter. Your saving Amazing Grace is that your six-string guitar is one mean iron to pack.

@@vladimirbogosavljevic8039 you haven't even watched the video yet bro?
In fact, It was said by Mick Jaggers.
@@eduardoescobar566
I thought it was Paul McCarney who said that. It was definatley the Beatles not the Stones who gave that answer.
@@davidgarnett5011 not, It was The Rolling Stones, the Beatles were not into the blues
Been listening to Muddy Waters for years. So much respect.

Man I would kill to experience that, thanks for sharing
This is my favorite blues song from all time... thank´s for this amazing video!!!!
Greetings from Chile
It is really difficult to play simple!!!!
Great video!!!!

Muddy stole it -- priceless. At least the Beatles, Stones, and Clapton gave him credit !
Pilgrim, you always come out with the best songs. I was really in the mood to hear some Muddy Waters and play it too. Thank you so much 😎👍❤🔥🇺🇸🙏!!!
I dig this channel , and your dediction to the true masters . Keep on keeping on bro
You have such a great channel and explain things so well. Thank you
Great lesson, as always. Thanks.

I actually like Muddy with Johnny Winter, the best of his recordings.
"What happens when muddys got his mojo working"
Very enjoyable and informative. I love the music of Muddy! How about some Slim Harpo?
Or Guitar Slim? 😄
This is fantastic!! Love this!!

Great video Thom. Love your work!
Great video thanks . Love that rhythm guitar from back then . Especially Willie Johnstons playing with early howlin wolf .
Great lesson for a great song!!!
Great choice for all of us to get our mojo's working. Thanks GP, I had no idea that Muddy could move like that.

Steady rollin bob margolin an unsung hero who played on so many tracks we all love, quite a thrill, i must say

Love your catalog.....how about some " Bad Company "
besides being a splendid guitarist, you are also an actor
J.J. Cale also had a briljant version of Mojo on his album Really. Great stuff !
Mr. Otis Spann on the piano.

Preston "Red" Foster is listed as writer.
Muddy holds a very, very special place here in Chicago. And I believe it was Keith that hoped to meet Muddy (he did).
Great lesson as always!
Can you do long distance call? Someday
1057 the year I was born💜💙
Great as always. There's a wrong chart for the E9 in the solo, b string on 9th fret, not as shown on 10th.
The guy at 1:48 has some slick moves

Does the e9 chord match the diagram at 6:30? I know that chord from hideaway.

I love what your work. Just in case you didn't know you have the wrong chord sketch on E9. Your index finger should be on F#
Love your videos. Can learn so much!
The 2. E9 you showed is x-12-11-'9'-12 not '10' like on chord pic.
There is also D in it, so isn’t it a E7add9? I am not so good at figuring out chords.

These days, blues is mainly about the guitar. But Muddy's band was an equal balance of harp, piano, guitar, bass, and drums -- a "blues orchestra".
