Finally a Parliamentary train that I have actually been on! After missing the last train to Maidstone I had to wait for the first one the next morning. I was a bit confused when it stopped here (although I was still pretty drunk).
I like things like this. I discovered a similar (ish) weird journey path the other day on the Tyne and Wear Metro. There are two lines - yellow and green. There is a part of the route map where these coincide, allowing you to get off a green line train and board a yellow line train (or vice versa), but the vast majority of stations are simply either green only, or yellow only. Green line trains only serve green line stations and yellow line trains only serve yellow line stations. You cannot get on at a yellow station and get off at a green station without changing trains or vice versa. Or so I thought... Once a day, incredibly early in the morning (before 5am), there is a train you can board at the green line only station, Regent Centre, which, instead of terminating at South Hylton (green line terminus), snakes off after Pelaw (which is served by both the yellow and green line trains) towards South Shields (yellow line only station). This is the only way you can get on a train at a green line only station and alight (without changing trains) at a yellow line only station. Thought it was interesting.
That train is the 0458 off RGC (Regent Centre) and operates Mon-Fri. It's purely for operational reasons, because going out the west end of the depot is much easier than going out of the east end for trains going south so to get a train towards SSS (South Shields) early enough in the AM without beginning service earlier it must go via RGC otherwise it would be going out to BTN (Benton) and crossing over (which the rest of the following SSS trains do (with the exception of the ones that continue around The Coast), the first of which departs the depot roughly the same time as the one at RGC just it goes out of the east end and up to BTN before turning and heading back). Also, as an aside this is the only time this happens in the printed timetable. However, this does happen during disruption to assist in turning trains around as RGC is a key time recovery station. This also happens whenever the line between SGF (South Gosforth) and LBN (Longbenton) is closed. With trains from SSS travelling to RGC and using the sidings there to turn around.
I have no idea why I was recommended this video. Guess what, two nice decent blokes talking about train tables and train lines ... at 5am!!!! Impressive
I used to do that journey regularly in the past when British Rail ran a half hourly service from London Bridge to Victoria ... Pre-Overground (and when Clapham High St was just called Clapham)
I’m kind of glad you brought this video up Geoff because I experienced some strange services before. For example: Around towards the end of the summer or the beginning of autumn last year, on Saturdays I’ve often seen some Southeastern services at East Croydon that go to Hastings from Charing Cross which was unusual considering it is not shown at least as a limited service on the national rail map. Southeastern can run some strange services every now and then
I remember going through that section a few times in the period , 2000-09 on trains coming around the Catford Loop from Bromley South. It did not happen very often and the trains did not stop at those stations, but it helped to break the early morning monotony.
We don't have unusual train services like this in New Zealand. However, I've been on an usual ferry service, the 7:30am service from Downtown to Half Moon Bay via Rangitoto Island. This service operates on Saturday and Sunday only.
Happy newyear from the Netherlands. It becomes nerdier and nerdier and I love it. I do'nt know if its English but you understand at least I hope.......
Geoff, I was once told that if a train served Brixton it couldnt serve clapham high st as its too close. Also A rival rail company was allowed to build a line to Victoria from Kent provided it didn't stop at any station before it got there!! There are also abandonded stations at East Brixton, Camberwell, East st and Walworth road. Ironically the nearby road, Walworth road is the most congested in london!!!!
A couple of fun PSULs are Waterloo to Basingstoke services. I think the 22:42 is one; it actually runs along a section of the District Line instead of the South Western main line.
Geoff, how about a ride on the train from Basingstoke which calls at 05.49 Wimbledon then on to Waterloo via East Putney? A nice trundle up part of the District Line.
Yes, but do it in the Summer so we can see where we are going. Might also be nice to get someone to do some exterior filming at East Putney and (say) Southfields.
I did that route the other way around, getting a late train from Waterloo to Wimbledon (from a high platform at Waterloo) and then spending ages going through Wandsworth Road, East Putney, Southfields and Wimbledon Park (non stop) before eventually arriving at Wimbledon so late that there were no passenger trains back to Southfields. So not only did I go through my home station and not get allowed to get off, I also saw District Line trains arriving at Wimbledon and going back through Southfields without stopping. The novelty of going through my home station on a National Rail train kind of got worn off by having to walk all the way home from Wimbledon (and hearing empty trains driving past me on the way).
Seven Kings station is only served by TfL Rail, but at 05:37 Monday-Saturday, a fast Greater Anglia train stops there calling at Stratford and Liverpool Street. A similar scenario to the one in the video
There's a once a week train from Birmingham New Street to Gloucester at 23:00 run by West Midland Trains even though they don't advertise stopping at Bromsgrove.
That train was brought in to replace the old Victoria to London Bridge via Peckham Rye service that was withdrawn back in 2012ish, when it was replaced by London Overground, the other bit of the missing link provided by London Overground with their Battersea Park terminators twice a day.
Would've been interesting to see whether Clapham High Street to Bromley South was via Atlantic Line/Denmark Hill or the transfer to the main SE Chatham route through Brixton station - also let it be remembered that SE Dartford - Victoria trains run fast from Denmark Hill via Clapham High Street platforms - well scouted, gentlemen! \m/
If you look at the link for this service on Realtime Trains, you can actually see that after Clapham High Street, it does pass through Brixton, Herne Hill, etc. to get to Bromley South.
There’s A Service That Runs From Denmark Hill, Comes From Dartford, And Takes The Overground Track Past Clapham High Street, And comes off before Wandsworth road. But is a good time!
I am SO going to Denmark Hill Station when I visit in February, since I'm from Denmark ;-) Thanks for a great video, again again again again again again again again again again again again again again :-)
I am doing the Wolverhampton to Walsall over the direct route Parliamentary train in a few weeks which used to an Hourly Service from Wellington to Wolverhampton until I think 2008 when that service stopped running
You could also do Wolverhampton to Walsall, avoiding Birmingham. There's one train a week that does that, in that direction only - the 06:38 on a Saturday.
Philip Edwards ooo I always get the train from Walsall to Birmingham and wolvo to Birmingham and Birmingham to wolvo but never knew they had once a week service that avoids Birmingham well I’ll have to get that at some point
@@lukejohn1277 there's a good selection of other services that are scheduled to use that line up to just before Walsall. But it's the last bit, the leg of the junction that goes towards Walsall, that's unique. It's freight only apart from that service.
Philip Edwards that’s well cool as I never knew that service existed before now I thought every train from Wolverhampton goes to Walsall through brum but I’m gonna get that train this Saturday maybe as im interested to see what it’s like
Actually, the Gravesend - London Victoria (via Bexleyheath) services do use slow line of South London Line from Denmark Hill to Clapham High Street and turn back to fast line, but sometime gets on the strange underpass line from Wansworth Road
This train no longer goes to Gravesend, it only goes as far as Dartford and now sometimes 4 carriages long which makes it very overcrowded. The Bexleyheath trains from Charing Cross are only now during rush hour. Thanks to the DFT running Southeastern, people hate the service now
Britain has some interesting stations like Victoria. That train only runs once every day? Dang, so limited. And for a parliamentary train, it has so many stops. Interesting. Also, I’m super excited you’re doing All The Stations Ireland. I have Irish heritage on my father’s side and currently learning Irish. So excited to see the stations and the beauty of the island
@Avery Lopez-Baines lots of trains run from victoria to ashford via maidstone east just only one stops at wondsworth and Clapham as i used to get on that train most days
At least it keeps the line open for future use. Would have liked to try the train that used to exit from an east-bound bay at East Ham and looped around back westward through Stratford but the line is long gone now. Also, in the old Shoreditch station you could see through to the lines to Liverpool Street and I understand that they were connected at one time, so trains from Liverpool Street could run down through New Cross/Gate and on to the South Coast.
Having used the VIC-MDE service more times than I can count, I can safely say I've never stopped at Wandsworth Road. Nor Clapham High Street, for that matter. The first stop is normally Bromley South. Also, "enjoy Maidstone" is not a phrase that's heard very often.
Geoff there is a once a day service ran by Chiltern Railways out of Stratford Upon Avon then to Banbury, Kings Sutton, Heyford, Tackley then Oxford then it does a return to Banbury. Normally the Oxford to Banbury service is ran by GWR the normal Chiltern service to Oxford is to London Marylebone
Platform 5 for the 10:10 southeastern service to Ramsgate via Meopham. Calling at: Bromley south, Longfield, Meopham, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, Sittingbourne, Teynham, Faversham, Whitstable, Chestfield & Swalcliffe, Herne bay, Birchington-on-sea, Westgate-on-sea, Margate, Broadstairs, Dumton park and Ramsgate. This train has 12 coaches. Platform 5 for the 10:10 southeastern service to Ramsgate via Meopham.
The fact that there is no longer a direct regular service from these two stations to Victoria is a shame. You would have to take the overground to Clapham Junction then change, taking an absurd 25-30 minutes for what should be less than 10. Clapham High Street is not far from Clapham Common on the Northern Line, but Wandsworth Road is not near a tube station. It would only add a few minutes if the Victoria-Orpington or Victoria-Dartford trains stopped there.
SE services use the atlantic lines through Clapham High Street & Wandsworth Road all the time, but they don't normally stop. At least, they used to. I could be somewhat out of date with this. I'm pretty sure they still use the low level lines in the Stewarts Lane area often; not sure about that outbound only slip though. In fact, looking at Carto Metro suggests that any service using pl 1 or 2 at Denmark Hill _must_ go over Brixton and through Clapham High Street on the Atlantics. And I know that SE services often use pl 1 & 2 at Denmark Hill as I've alighted there many a time.
Years ago I used to live in Croydon and normally trains towards London stop next at Selhurst (to Victoria) or Norwood Junction (to London Bridge). However, I spotted on the timetable that very early in the morning there was a train that went to Selhurst and then to Norwood Junction which would be very odd. Sadly, I never found out whether that was just a printing error on the timetable or the train actually did that.
There is a direct line {skirting Selhurst depot) between Selhurst and Norwood Junction. As far as I know, no trains use it in passenger service these days, though in the 70's it was used regularly, as there used to be a "loop" service, out via West Norwood and Crystal Palace, back via Norbury, and vice-versa. It was used as a diversionary route one Sunday in about 1989.
@@ianmcclavin actually that track is on passenger service!early in the morning there’s a service from Victoria to Norwood Junction then reverses into the depot

This is the route that used to be covered by the Victoria - Peckham Rye - London Bridge train, isn't it? For a while they ran an irregular train out of Battersea Park over the rest of that route but now it seems they've scheduled a Kent train to stop at those two stations to provide the token service. Makes a bit more sense than stopping it at Battersea Park, I guess.
Awesome !!! Pretty please ! Is there anyway that you can do this run again in the summer when there is light, get in good with Monica and officialdom for front drivercab view video, and ride it to Denmark Hill, so that we can also see the mandatory run through the Sheppard's Lane Junction to get off of the Atlantic Line back onto the Chatham Line ??? Yeah !! Aarre Peltomaa of Mississauga, Ontario (across the pond)
Been into Victoria from Maidstone East by the rare branch but only on one or two occasions. A pub probably gone now was featured in a film which I think might have been a Michael Caine '80's or '90's spy thriller.
Geoff, please do the GWR Parliamentary service from Filton Abbey Wood to Bath Spa not via Bristol Temple Meads. If you did that you wouldn’t have to get up at 4 am as the train leaves at 16:03.
Geoff, when you showed the timetable entry of the 05:57 from Wandsworth Road to Clapham High Street, there was no indication that the train offered First Class accommodation. A great pity as it is the ONLY train of the day between those two points with First Class, so a potential revenue loss. In fact, I wonder if you could go back to Wandsworth Road and purchase a first class single to Clapham High Street? Great video as always. 😋
That's a weird route, a SouthEastern train, going west to go to Kent, along a Waterloo route from Victoria and it's a Southern Electrostar train disguised as a SouthEastern train!
Darren Gomes It’s the same route all Southeastern trains take, except it ran under the mainlines through Stewarts Lane to serve the platforms at WWR and CLP
I like this railway "mate" Geoffrey has found along the way. Think they did the isle of Sheppey together. Be good to see Geoff with "Jack" or Jack's twin sister sometime out on the rails.
This is one of those trains where, unless you're catching it specifically to say "I caught that weird train that stops at Clapham High Street at six in the morning," something has gone terribly wrong with your life.
@@ksu461 nah, it ain't a freight only line - was used on New Year's Day for example when Haymarket/Princes Street Gardens were closed for WCML services
On Google Maps, if you hover over either of these stations it shows South Eastern and Overground. It's true, but useless unless you get up very very early.

I love his video
spot on smith and jones parody
Charlie Brown Glad someone appreciated my joke! 😂
@@martinclitheroe Mel Smith did some 'serious' acting roles also, I remember he played a scary 'baddie' in Minder once.
It’s 03:30... why am I watching this!? Classic sleepless UA-cam
Happy New Year!
Should do a 2019 tea tally!
It's so unusual that southeastern stop at Clapham high Street hey usually go past to Brixton and make their way into kent
Can you do that trip again in the summer, when there is more day light, to show the outside of the train, when it is going onto the junction.
They should do a special multipack of sharpies in the colours of the tube lines.
Would you be able to investigate Chiltern line to Baker street? You can find it marked on the Marylebone-Amersham-Aylesbury timetable.
that's just met line trains. No diesels are allowed in Baker Street
@@josephmolloy8468 it would be cool if they were tho
Happy new year Geoff and interesting video
Great video! Is there a still a London Overground parliamentary train to Battersea Park?
Geoff, when you showed the timetable entry of the 05:57 from Wandsworth Road to Clapham High Street, there was no indication that the train offered First Class accommodation. A great pity as it is the ONLY train of the day between those two points with First Class, so a potential revenue loss. In fact, I wonder if you could go back to Wandsworth Road and purchase a first class single to Clapham High Street? Great video as always. 😋
For Merseyrail, some trains end at Aintree for the Grand National
Can we do it in the summer?
Yes! I would love to join it if you do it during summer. 😊
@@martinclitheroe It doesn't going anywhere near the Waterloo lines except where it dives under them. And at no point is it travelling westwards.
Norbiton Flyer where have I mentioned Waterloo?! WWR = Wandsworth Road, CLP = Clapham High Street
Probably half way through the journey the train stops and at a specific section some people exit and end up on platform 3 and 9 quarters.
What about videos on some projected lines? Bakerloo extension. The two Thamesmead proposed crossing routes. etc.
I like this railway "mate" Geoffrey has found along the way. Think they did the isle of Sheppey together. Be good to see Geoff with "Jack" or Jack's twin sister sometime out on the rails.
That really is an awful noise - at least I sort of know what was causing it!!
Oh your end screen is purple that's new!!! #PurpleTrain
Happy new year
This is one of those trains where, unless you're catching it specifically to say "I caught that weird train that stops at Clapham High Street at six in the morning," something has gone terribly wrong with your life.
Sad to see looks like this service has been cut.
Please can you do the "2R98 1554 Bristol Parkway to Bath Spa" which goes via the "Rhubarb Curve" avoiding Bristol Temple Meads.
Adam Carter that has to be the second best food related railway name after Bacon Factory Junction near Norwich. 😀
You should take a look at the one train a day that uses the Edinburgh Suburban line - it's a Cross Country Glasgow Central - Edinburgh Waverley train
Canny find that one on real time trains hen. Any idea of times
It's 1C99 2105 GLC - EDB
@@danners4302 brilliant buddy will be getting this freight only line in only working along the line
@@ksu461 nah, it ain't a freight only line - was used on New Year's Day for example when Haymarket/Princes Street Gardens were closed for WCML services
Sorry when I looked on RTT it just showed this working freight and ECS. :).
On Google Maps, if you hover over either of these stations it shows South Eastern and Overground. It's true, but useless unless you get up very very early.
