This lesson teaches you how to perform two types of Anti Shipping techniques using bombs:
1. A low altitude level bombing attack
2. The Mast Height Attack using Skip Bombing
Here is the mission I used for the video so you can practice it for yourself: www.dropbox.co...

I "skipped" straight to this vid and was not disappointed. Loving the content as always!
Cheers for the endorsement and the pun Meriwether! Lol
My father was in the 8th squadron 3rd bomb group. He was a Radioman and waist gunner. He commented one day he looked back after their run and saw the next airplane's bomb skip back up and strike the plane and it exploded. He said the bombs sometimes did not quite go where you thought. It required perfect technique. This is a very useful video for showing this technique. I make presentations on 3rd Bomb Group as he left a great deal of information on them. He was not a fan of using the 75 mm canon they tried also. Hard to aim and he said "the whole damn airplane felt like it would quit flying from the recoil skip bombing was more effective. Good Job
but the cannon is cooler.
@@5peciesunkn0wn I think that a 75 MM cannon may seem cooler. Big gun looking from the outside. My father was on the inside and was not impressed on its lethality mostly from difficulty to aim. 33 months in the theater I may be biased but go with his eyewitness accounts.
WHAT a genius!!! Now I can try it without getting shot down every time!!! Thanks Req (as ever!!).
I'm not the genius ;-) You can thank the aircrews in WWII for this as its where I pulled the techniques from. It worked good then so no point reinventing then wheel now!
Thank you for this, I have been using this technique on the simulator mode of war thunder recently and the accuracy of my bombs went up by a lot!
Awesome! All the techniques I show apply to any sim, so it's good to hear your WT flying has improved!
Great video. How did you go about judging the release points using the gun sight and nose of the aircraft - trial and error or was it documented somewhere?
Thanks Sim Hog, I used the techniques from "A War of Their Own: Bombers over the South Pacific" and came up with the references for the A-20 while practicing them. I wanted to find an outside reference while still providing a good enough level of accuracy as I wouldn't want my head inside looking at the instruments for too long while flying that low.
Great video and techniques. I use a different approach to utilize the weakest point of the ships though. I dive attack from around 1,200m altitude and make my run along the longitudinal axis of the ship and aim for bridge/conning tower portion. This seems to be the weakest point of most ships and usually only takes one bomb (of 250kg or more, 50kg will destroy torpedo boats easily) to destroy them and also allows me to egress and reset at a higher rate of speed. Your technique is excellent for dropping bombs in pairs, but I rarely drop in pairs on ships.
Thanks Justin. The one you use is perfectly valid too! As gamers we want to maximise points by destroying as much as possible of course, so you won't always want to drop too much on one target :-) These were techniques A-20s actually used hence replicating the dropping in pairs or more. It's just a lot of fun buzzing along the water at 50ft too lol
Your technique reminds me of what the Fw-200 Condors of the Luftwaffe would do but they had a slight angle IIRC
Skip bombing, what a thing of beauty.
Thanks for the vid. I've sunk few ships with 190 and Stuka in MP but these were nice tips if i ever try to do it with A-20.
Just do the conversions to metric and give it a go!
Your videos are so well explained, thanks for taking the time to put these together.
Cheers Steve, appreciate it. I read about these techniques in a book about A-20 ops and I replicated them as good as I could
@@RequiemsACTL I've been trying to pull this off solo in BoK in the A-20 but keep getting riddled by AA on my descent and approach. I can't seem to juke as well as you demonstrated, my maneuvers are too slow. I'm using a 19 year old MS Sidewinder II joystick; I don't like to blame equipment but that may be having an impact on my handling response, haha. I'll keep practicing.
Thanks! Useful as always!
Damn that was good thanks for posting
I came here to watch this as a result of reading about this technique in Captain Tameichi Hara's book _Japanese Destroyer Captain_ where the IJN was in a panic about its effectiveness. Here's what Hara said: "Conventional evasive maneuvers proved utterly useless against these skip-bombing tactics." Interesting to be getting the view from the other side...
Excellent! I love your technique. I used to do the same "skip bombing" technique with the Junkers 88 . It was working great and so fun! Also please tell us in metric as well.
I'll check and see if there are any German techniques they may have used for this, but failing that I can easily demo this using the Ju88 in metric too. The conversions are simple
Thank you Requiem! yes the conversion are simple. A video with a Junkers 88 will be nice.
I wish you the best in your pilot career, Myself I will start a training for being a pro pilot and an instructor next year.
Excellent Nil!! If you ever have any questions before you start or during your training you only need to ask! Study what you can before you start flying and good luck with your training :-)
Thank you very much Requiem! that is very kind of you!
Excellent video.
Great video. I love the A20 for this kind of attack. I also attack the ships in a curve, this makes it harder for the AA to target accurately. I like to use other ships as cover, coming in just above the sea and attack the armed vessels first. What size bombs were you using?
Nice job. Only comment I'd make is that from the pics I've seen from Rabaul, Simpson Harbor, I think they were using 1 sec delay bombs or less.
Outstanding video! Great explanation of anti shipping level bombing and mast height attack techniques! Also good advice about need to jink, bob, and weave to avoid AA fire. Questions: Any chance of doing a similar video using the IL-2 Mod 1943? Or possibly advise what comparable sight settings, e.g. like bottom of A-20 gunsight glass for mast height attack, to use with an IL-2 Mod 1943 for timing of bomb release?
Yeah I can for sure. I included specific numbers so people can do the conversions for whatever airplane they use but knowing the sight picture is good too so I'll come up with something
The Air Combat Tutorial Library
Thanks and keep up the great work!
2:46 simply glorious
I would have liked to hit the ship on the waterline but that was still an ok hit ;-)
This game needs torpedoes so badly
And heavy bombers
Torpedoes, better career model for western front, and separate control schemes for each plane like in DCS.
Nice job!
Cheers mate, skip bombing is tons of fun when you're not colliding with a ship or the water! :-D
It seems that direct dive attacks with bombs penetrating the upper ship do more damage. With those I find it that the ships more frequently outride explode as well so that you get kill credited to you. Since they've implemented ship damage control I'm never quite sure whether the ships (as damaged as in your vid) actually are sinking.
The level attack used 2x 250lb bombs while the skip bombs were 2x 100lbs. Although you dont see it due to video length all ships were destroyed and sunk
outstanding tuorial as usual, i assume though the romanian navy isn't the most capable when it comes to anti aircraft fire. i would love to see you try this against a couple german or japanese destroyers and cruisers instead of some sloops
I do this in MP against harder targets but I always try to show an easier to follow example for my tutorials so people can take the principle of what I'm teaching and apply it how you need :-)
Espetacular lesson
Awesome video, as always!
Thanks SF :-) Skip bombing is tons of fun!
You can use this with any craft, just gotta find the same reference point for releasing
But the parameters are the same 50ft alt and 300mph speed
I'd love to see more tutorials of ground attack. I'm horrible at dogfighting. Would love to learn more about bombing.
It's definitely an under represented part of the sims so I'd like to make more too :-)
@@RequiemsACTL I led an a10c flight in dcs world for a year. Was a blast. I've messed with IL2 CLOD and team fusion has done amazing work. Had a few bombing runs on enemy airfields. Only in HE111. I have not been a fan of fighters in stalingrad. It feels like the plane is on a rubberband. Definitely different that CLOD. But I do like the visuals and variety of planes. More ground content too. So if you make more ill be paying attention.
@@HolyOrangeJuice Ah the A10. I loved flying that thing in DCS. Just not enough time! I want to get back into the f18 but struggling to find time just for that!
@@RequiemsACTL it was given to me for free and I still haven't had time.
It's my favourite aspect of the sims. A20 is possibly the best plane in the sim for this kind of attack in my opinion, although several single engined aircraft, such as IL2, FW190 or 109s can be effective if used en masse.
He makes this look easy.
Just a lot of practice at it is all
Great video as always. Im curious tough, where do you find information about the tactics used? Again very cool video!
This technique was from "A War of their own: Bombers over the South West Pacific"
@@RequiemsACTL thank you!
My uncle did skip-bombing for real in WWII. 184 missions in a P-40 and then later A-20s.
Any chance you have a video of dive bombing single ground targets with the A20 or is the same technique used as other aircraft?
No I don't have any dive bombing examples. For the most part you can just point at the target and as you pull up release the bomb as the target passes under the nose.
Can the level bombing speeds and reference altitudes also be used for attacking land targets, or is all this specific to anti-shipping attacks?
You can use it for ground targets
I scrolled down 85 miles and nearly lost hope but then I found this. Just goes to show how uncommon this stuff is.
Yeah I don't think the UA-cam algorithm likes my stuff since I don't do ads haha
Historical skip Bombing : Has lot of risks, you have to fly properly, be close to water, and after all the risks you have to avoid AA manually and bring friend to help doing damage.
*Wargaming seeing this and bringing Skip bombers in World of Warships* : HAHA Bomb from over cloud altitude, the bombs will drop 90 degrees and still skip 5 times over 5 ships, throwing 10 bombs in one go, and what is AA LOL
What game is this? And great vids ^ ^
This is the Il-2 Great Battles series (Battle of Stalingrad, Moscow, Kuban, Bodenplatte)
@@RequiemsACTL I'm really glad i came across your videos because the tips work in war thunder and its helped out a lot the biggest part that its helped with is my accuracy (even tho i play in arcade and sometimes realistic) and timing. Looking forward to new videos ^ ^
No worries :-) I create my videos off real life principles and techniques so they should work regardless of what simulator you fly...provided the sim models the physics accurate enough of course.
jumping torpedo
Do you know if DCS simulates this too? I fear not
I imagine DCS should have no problem simulating skip bombing. I'll have to try it next time I load it up
Can you make a angle off guide for cliffs of Dover ?
Angle Off as in the gunsights? The RAF one and the REVI should apply to Cliffs of Dover I think. Unless of course the sights aren't the RAF MkII and REVI C/12D in CloD. I can't recall off the top of my head if they are different.
Oh ok, thanks!
how long can a bomb skip along the water surface?
I don't know. I believe the bomb can skip multiple times but I wouldn't even be able to guess a distance
@@RequiemsACTL it will be nice if you can set fuse to 5 sec and release bomb more ealy than in video,
Que técnica tenho que aprender muito
O bombardeio pular onde a bomba é refletida pela água é o mais útil
I forgot about skip bombing lol
pls don't use alien messurements, but good video eitherway
BirbStrike makes sense for the A-20 since its instruments are in Imperial units.
Finkeren well then it makes sense
Thanks Finkeren :-) Birbstrike, I got these techniques from a book involving A-20s so I thought it was appropriate to replicate them in the right airplane. If people want it I can easily do another using a Ju88 or something in metric. I grew up on the metric system so I didnt ignore it for no reason LOL
I know I'd be interested in a Ju-88 (and/or He-111/Pe-2) video not for the different units but for when to drop the bombs during mast height attacks does the "just under the gun sight" technique work with more aircraft or is it a A-20 only kind of thing?
Aaron, I can't recall offhand if I have a specific reference for those airplanes as I was focused on the A-20. I'm out flying a trip and won't be home until Saturday to double check for you. The bottom of the gunsight glass is specific for the A-20 though (hence the blue text highlight), but by applying the same conditions to drop from 1000ft (300m) away at 50ft/300mph (15m/480km/hr) we can see what the references is in other airplanes. If there isn't a clear cut reference I can adjust the technique to provide one.
Bomb setting contact or delay?
You need a delay.
@@RequiemsACTL thx
american a-20 against convoy that has 2 russian gnevny-class destroyer in ww2.
this doesn't make sense
It's just for technique demonstration purposes only
