  • Today I'll be testing out this set of matt graphite pencils, by Faber Castell. I've had this tin for a while and forgot to make a video, but here it is now, hooray! So, are these pencils actually matte and not shiny? Will they reflect under lights the way normal graphite pencil does? Today I'm going to find out, by doing a side by side comparison in a full drawing.
    Find this set of 6 pencils in a nice tin on Amazon (affiliate links used).

    I have the next size tin, although there is another set with more pencils and maybe charcoal too. Kristy Partridge mentioned that the matt pencils do require good paper to work. She found that some papers were terrible with them.

      @BeckyTregear  8 місяців тому

      I can totally see that - the pencils are much grabbier and I don't think they'd work well at all on super-smooth paper. I'm glad I picked a toothier option!

    Hi Becky. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad).
    I use the F-C Matt pencils a lot when using a moved media approach with charcoal since the graphite is very Matt and you avoid the weird shine when mixing graphite with charcoal on one drawing.
    Cheers from Sunny Spain!

    Nice review, I've Been trying these Matt pencils out for about a week, and from a purely personal point of view there is one aspect of these I can't get away with. For some reason I thought these pencils would have a "bite" ( if that's the right word) similar to charcoal when being applied. In fact they are the total opposite. They have a very slick almost greasy feel when being used,. I'll persevere but at the moment I'm not convinced.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  6 місяців тому

      Interesting...I found them to have a rougher texture when directly comparing them with the Mars Lumographs, which were a lot smoother and more graphitey. Definitely needs more testing!

      Honestly I think I'd use them mainly for filming purposes as I prefer the regular Mars Lumograph ones for their lovely smoothness. But the matte ones are excellent for being under lights so I know they'll come in handy! 😊

    Great review, I was curious if the feel of the these pencils was different from graphite. I thought I might try them for sketching but I think I prefer the traction of graphite on paper versus what you described, which sounds familiar from a different pencil I tried and didn't really like.

    Nice comparison! I wonder if the matte pencils have charcoal in them. It is my understanding that pencils about 8B have charcoal in them (this was info from a couple of years ago). But since they really kept their point, I have no idea what makes them matte. I would think that charcoal would be softer and dull the points quicker.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  8 місяців тому +1

      It doesn't feel like charcoal, but there has to be some sort of matte binder in them...they're very strange, I don't know what it is! A lot less smooth than pure graphite, that's for sure.

      @@BeckyTregear again, there is a difference between those whom can draw and those whom can't. Again, it isn't about tracing. It's about robbing youth of a skill, lying to people and destroying a trade. A), you can draw. B) you didn't lie about it. C) you sure weren't asking a customer to pay hundreds of dollars for something you lied about tracing other people's work lol

    • @phillipstroll7385
      @phillipstroll7385 8 місяців тому

      @@BeckyTregear maybe I could better explain my distain of tracing and this whom pretend it is acceptable instead of practicing and learning drawing skills this way:
      We all have cellphones. Cellphones can do just about everything and anything at anytime. They can read to a text to us and we can talk to text anyone. Eliminating the need to read and write, but we would NEVER tell our children it is okay for them to not learn to read or write because a cellphone could do it for them. Are there times when we are driving, doing dishes, etc when it comes in handy to use these tools, absolutely. However, we wouldn't dare rely upon them solely to get through daily life. And that is my point. I see no difference between telling today's youth is perfectly acceptable to forgo acquiring a skill that would improve their self-esteem, give a sense of achievement, earn them an income etc etc. Whereas those dependant on the printing of images, tracing solely will be our of a job of the lights go out.
      Also, if we can't be honest, if the foundations of the community isn't built on honest open communication what Good is it exactly? People whom are dependant upon tracing sure aren't buying massive quantities of supplies to express their creativity. So that hurts your sales as well. I'm not trying to be unkind or hurt anyone's feelings. The goal is to create a better world, not destroy it.
