  • What is the Best Luxury sedan under $15,000? Good Question. Let me ask you this, do you want people to like you? Do you want children to respect you? If yes, buy a W126 Mercedes Benz. Live a little.

    You nailed it. The W126 is the dream car of my childhood and i'm glad i own one. Not an 560 just an 420SE but the feeling is the same. Nevertheless: this W212 is also in nice spec.

    As a fan of MB, the w126 and w116 are the best of all without a doubt. I really envy whoever has one and can drive it but I'm glad to see that today there are still people who love these cars

    My daily driver for the past five years has been a 1984 300SD. And like you, I'm a young guy as well. It has been a dream to own. It has only failed to start once, and that was because of a tiny glow plug relay that hadn't been replaced since new. It's been 25,000 miles of trouble-free ownership for me. Little things will break here and there, but that's to be expected from any old car. I recently bought a grey market '85 500SEL in the exact same colors (Midnight Blue on Palomino leather), and even though it needs a ton of work, I'm toying with the idea of replacing my 300SD with it. The M117 V8 and the long wheelbase just make the car feel so much more stately.

    There might be a navigation screen for that S Class to modernize it. I am not sure but there is definitely a factory specific European headlight and bumper conversion that will make your car look better. I loved them. 64db at 70mph. So quiet. Being driven in one was almost better than driving it yourself. If you are collecting different cars it might be a good idea to invest in a multiple garage facility in an industrial park. Maybe a dozen units, then rent out the empty ones to pay the expenses.

    • @thomasretzios
      @thomasretzios  Рік тому +1

      That is a very good point, and I am considering doing a European bumper and headlight conversion, it makes the car so sleek. With stereos I usually default to having either the stock or a stock looking head unit that has a Bluetooth module added. It keeps the car looking period correct, and then I just use my phone.
      That is good advice on the storage idea, thank you!

    Absolutely brilliant review. Buying a car isn't about price, fuel economy, or whatever people prioritise these days, it's about how the car makes you feel. Although I wouldn't say no to a W212 E-class, especially that one which looks immaculate, the W126 is just in a league of its own.
    Just out of curiosity, is it possible to swap out the US spec headlights and bumpers for Euro spec ones? It would definitely improve the look dramatically.

    • @thomasretzios
      @thomasretzios  Рік тому +3

      Thank you! And yes it is possible to swap over the headlights and the bumpers, I am actually looking into doing this now. You also have the change the wiper arms for the headlights and adapt the wiring but there is a lot of information for it online.

    I agree the W126 is an amazing option. But a R129 SL, either the 500 or 600, are the best bargain for the money! There’s nothing like getting behind the wheel of the iconic roadster. And even better if you have the W140 S-Class to match! Love our black Beauty’s 600 Duo! 😏

    The W126 is the best designed S Class ever. And keep in mind that if anything goes wrong on the W126, it can be fixed by a competent mechanics, without all kinds of proprietary electronic nonsense and computers.

    I sold my 2014 E350 and bought a beautiful, retired cardiologist owned 1991 420SEL W126. It drives much smoother, even smoother than my 2018 E300.
    Not to mention, I’ve inherited the 1990 W126 my parents bought 31 years ago.

    I have one that sits in my garage most of the time, and with only 42,000 miles. It uses lots of fuel, so I don't drive it often. I keep thinking about selling it, but when I open the garage door and see her sitting there, it just puts a smile on my face every time! Oh, and I paid $15,000 for her too, a couple years ago--third owner. Previous two owners both died of old age--maybe that will be me too ;)

    This was actually an exceptional review. Well done. People forget that cars have become less and less about driving experience and connection to the road. Now, it has become about whether the car has Apple CarPlay.

    Mercedes owners think showing off is vulgar . Understatement is important.

    • @perryelyod4870
      @perryelyod4870 Рік тому +2

      I once read that even Europeans in general don't like to 'show off'. Many take their AMG's, and M's, and RS's, and put the badges from the 'regular' car on them, with the lowest model designation, basically under badging them. Unlike in North America, where every second 318i has a M badge on it.

    • @thomasretzios
      @thomasretzios  Рік тому +1

      A great example of this is that you could order the E28 M5 without the M body kit, which would have been the ultimate sleeper back in the day. Also, I love humblebadging. The idea of putting a 528i badge on an M5 is hilarious to me.

    +1 .. Subscribed. .. Agreed, the W126 S-Klasse series was engineered like no other. .. An abundance of character doesn't begin to describe the S-Klasse driver sensation or ownership experience. .. Our own '94 E-320 C124 Coupe is of like-kind with the W126 build quality, yet with the addition of emerging technological attributes of the era. .. Cheers, Vail, Colorado ..
    P.S., Our neu 2023 MB E450 wagon is a closer step to the "Old Sckol" Mercedes build quality. ..

And shortly after my dad found another gem also an 85 silver metallic 500 sel with 120k for $4700!!! Now it’s impossible to find such prices but these cars are very much worth it 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽

    That w126 is a dream combination for me. Light grey interior with dark grey or Diamondschwartz as on my e23 BMWL7. I definitely go against the grain by saying I love the US version of the w126 however the euro headlights are a great upgrade. I’m a classic Bimmer fanatic but a w126 just like that will be in my garage one day.

    I don't think this a good car for a daily. Even if this car is very old, don't you have to still pay the workers for maintenance? The mercedes repairbill is still gonna eat you up, won't it? xD

    • @Vegas3662
      @Vegas3662 Рік тому

      Without a doubt, the W212 is better than the W126

    • @thomasretzios
      @thomasretzios  Рік тому +1

      If you are going to pay someone to do all the maintenance, it definitely is not a cheap car to own. You may be able to get by ok with a 300se but especially with the big V8s, they have so many components that need servicing or will fail from age.
      The good news is that if you like working on your own cars and enjoy learning how these older Mercedes work, you can drive these without breaking the bank every time you turn the key. Parts are in decent supply and I have enjoyed learning about things like hydraulic suspensions and Bosch fuel injection systems through working on this.

    • @marcgianandrea8333

      @@marcgianandrea8333 ... +1. .. The W126 is a "big" auto, with daily city driving a bit of a chore. .. Road Trips however are another matter. .. Its the sweet spot of a W126. ..
      As for maintenance, the V8's cam-chain has a long life but when required its best left to your MB technician.
      (Ask me how I know) .. Much of routine maintenence is in the wheelhouse of a competent DIY; Filters, bearings, H2O hoses, brake's, eng oil/gear oils, etc.. .. A well maintained W126 will eat a full Saturday once twice a year. .. I used to look after a retired neighbors '1989 W126. .. Fond memories. .. The build quality is something to behold, its clockwork precision. ..
